01.12.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday January 12, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Univision Deportes snatched up the UEFA package to become the sole US Spanish-language broadcast rights holder stateside, lining up all UEFA national team competitions from 2018 to 2022 in the deal, including the UEFA EURO 2020, UEFA Nations League, UEFA Nations League Final Four and the European Qualifiers to the UEFA EURO 2020 as well as the European Qualifiers to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Univision Deportes will carry matches across UDN, Univision Network, UniMás, Galavision and will be streaming the properties via the Univision Deportes app.
“This new rights deal with UEFA is a part of our continued commitment to delivering the most comprehensive soccer coverage in the U.S.,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Univision Deportes. “Univision Deportes is the home of soccer 365-days per year and this partnership with UEFA is part of our strategy to grow our portfolio and acquire the rights to the teams and leagues that our soccer fans care about most. With this new agreement, Univision Deportes will continue to have the best soccer in the Americas and now the best soccer in Europe.”
In Sunday’s NFL Wild Card action, FOX Sports saw its carriage of the Packers/Redskins post a 21.8/37 in Nielsen household numbers, reeling in 38.8 million viewers to become the highest-rated and most-watched telecast of any kind since Super Bowl XLIX, according to the company. Still, with the Packers pulling away at the end, numbers finished off pace from 2014, which saw a Cowboys win average a 23.6/40, with 42.3 million viewers.
Around the dial, NBC’s coverage of the Seahawks nail-biting win averaged 35.3 million viewers for the network to rank as the most-watched early Sunday Wild Card on record, per Fast Nationals, and was up 25% over last year’s early Sunday Wild Card game. The matchup drew a 21.0 rating/42 share.
Continuing the NFL theme, NFL Network strung together some history and will carry Super Bowl I on Friday at 8p. The channel becomes the first network to ever replay the game on television with the original broadcast carried by both NBC and CBS and tapes of the game considered lost or recorded over. However, NFL Films were able to locate all 145 plays from Super Bowl I from more than a couple dozen disparate sources and stiched them together while fully restoring, re-mastering, and color correcting the footage. Host Chris Rose and Steve Mariucci anchor the broadcast and are joined by a plethora of NFL Media talent, such as Terrell Davis, Daniel Jeremiah, Steve Wyche, and Elliot Harrison.
Finally, the NFL will once again pay tribute to its best players, performances and plays from the 2015 season with the annual two-hour primetime awards special NFL Honors, set to run on CBS on Feb. 6 at 9p. The telecast will feature the announcement of the newest Pro Football Hall of Fame Class. Kicking off the night will be Super Bowl Saturday Night presented by Bose, a red carpet show on NFL Network at 8p. Top-Tier Sponsors of NFL Honors include Bose, Bridgestone, Lenovo, McDonald’s, Nationwide, Microsoft, SAP and Verizon.
With trophy in hand, Jordan Spieth’s win at the PGA TOUR’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions helped carry Golf Channel to its best overnight ratings in a decade. The final round grabbed a .70 overnight score for the tournament, the network’s best ever, and up 35% from the overnight for any previous telecast of this event on Golf Channel.
Meanwhile, the Australian Open hits the court with coverage set to begin on ESPN networks on Sunday. Over the course of two weeks, ESPN will offer more than 100 hours of live television plus a record of nearly 1,400 on WatchESPN. Programming will see, after the first day of play (January 17 at 7p), ESPN2 serve up daily, marathon, overnight telecasts from Melbourne (primarily starting at 9 p.m.) through the women’s semifinals; with later action running on ESPN. Approximately 40 additional hours will be aired on ESPN2 during the afternoon with action from the overnight telecasts.
Meanwhile, Tennis Channel offers viewers multiple live and encore matches, highlights, and studio analysis, during US Open with 11 consecutive days and close to 30 hours of live coverage at this year’s tournament. Between encore replays, highlights, Australian Open Today and Tennis Channel Live at the Australian Open, the network will devote nearly 200 hours over two weeks to the season’s opening major. The network will broadcast daylong blocks of encore-matches and highlights via Australian Open Today while nightly lead-in-in show Tennis Channel Live at the Australian Open debuts Sunday at 6p.
ONE World Sports locked in a deal for exclusive carriage of the Juventus TV, the club channel of Italy’s Juventus Football Club S.p.A. ONE World Sports will carry exclusive first-runs of complementary programming including pre- and post-game analysis, player interviews and profiles as well as encore presentations of matches beginning today at 6:30p.
WWE announced that WCW legend Sting will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 2 at American Airlines Center in Dallas as part of WrestleMania Week. In November of 2014, Sting made his debut in WWE, and went on to have his first-ever WrestleMania match against Triple H at WrestleMania 31. “We are truly honored to have Sting take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame,” said WWE’s Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative, Paul Levesque. “His contributions to our industry are unprecedented and we look forward to celebrating his incredible career with fans all over the world.”

Two more automakers are punching their ticket to the Super Bowl. Mini will return to the fray for the first time in five years, with a spot pushing the new Mini Clubman during the Feb. 7 game. Toyota is also onboard and will run a spot featuring the Prius. The NYT writes that the 60-second spot will run during the second quarter and marks the launch of the new "Comedy of Errors" campaign for Toyota’s Hybrid car. So far, the tally of Super Bowl 50 Car commercials so far includes Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Mini, Kia, Buick and Toyota.
Panini America locked in a long-term exclusive business partnership with Kevin Durant, with deal points that include trading card, autograph, marketing and business development aspects. As part of the agreement, Durant will serve as a global NBA spokesman for the company and his autographed trading cards and memorabilia will be available exclusively through Panini America and Panini Authentic. In addition, Durant will have input into product development and creative for select Panini NBA trading card products, as well as into product development for his Panini Authentic memorabilia products.
Arctic Cat signed on to become title sponsor of the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series in 2016. The newly named Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will make its 2016 debut Feb. 5 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala. The Wildcat will be showcased at numerous All Star events with riders participating in Wildcat exhibitions, racing head-to-head on the same racing surface as the All Star Circuit of Champions. In addition, Arctic Cat will award all-terrain vehicles to the top-three drivers in the final 2016 All Star Circuit of Champions standings.
Showtime Sports, for the first time in boxing history, will put two heavyweight title bouts on its YouTube page, offering fans access to the Jan. 16 Showtime Boxing doubleheader. In addition, the company announced that Showtime will offer a free preview from Jan. 16-18, making the bouts available to over 70 million households.
FC Bayern Munich is partnering with Yahoo Sports for a comprehensive global partnership that will deliver FC Bayern content to Yahoo each month. The partnership includes the strategic programming, creation and promotion of FC Bayern content across Yahoo platforms and includes the syndication of FC Bayern’s editorial and video content for programming in English, Spanish and German, across Yahoo Sports.

Daily fantasy sports fans will be able to keep playing in NY after an appeals court affirmed that FanDuel and DraftKings will be allowed to keep operating in the state while they battle the state’s attorney general. The court will hear the appeal in May. "Not surprisingly, the Court disagrees with the NY AG and agrees that millions of New Yorkers can and should continue to enjoy fantasy sports during this lengthy legal process,” said the Fantasy Sports Trade Association in a statement. “It’s time for the grandstanding and rhetoric to end – and time to embrace the thoughtful and measured approach being adopted in other states."
Canada’s Cineplex and WorldGaming locked in a new partnership with Sony Computer Entertainment Canada for a slate of national video gaming tournaments. The ‘Cineplex WorldGaming Canadian Tournament Presented by PlayStation’ will feature Call of Duty: Black Ops III and be produced by WorldGaming with the Regional Finals and Canadian Final events hosted at Cineplex theatres across Canada.
Minor League Baseball announced that David A.
