Good morning. It’s Thursday January 7, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Big hire for NBC Sports Group, nabbing former ESPN exec David Preschlack to serve as President, NBC Sports Regional Networks, and NBC Sports Group Platform and Content Strategy. He’ll begin Feb. 1 and will be charged with overseeing the NBC Sports Regional Networks portfolio, and will interact with each general manager in a range of areas including sales, content and ongoing relationship management. He will also lead the entire NBC Sports platforming strategy as the Company moves into new areas with existing and to-be-developed content. Preschlack previously served as Executive Vice President, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Disney and ESPN Networks Group, where he handled oversight of content distributed on computers, smartphones, tablets and connected devices

“David’s wealth of experience with digital innovation and distribution, as well as programming creation and acquisitions are what today’s marketplace demands for executives,” said NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus. “As we look to the future, his background and ability put us in position to further succeed and to broaden our opportunities across our entire portfolio.”

ON THE AIR

ESPN is bringing back the Megacast for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, at 8:30p. The contest will air on ESPN with 14 alternate productions spanning ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Classic, ESPNEWS, and ESPN3, in addition to ESPN Radio’s broadcast. ESPN’s traditional telecast will feature Chris Fowler calling play-by-play, with Kirk Herbstreit as analyst. Heather Cox reports on Clemson and Tom Rinaldi reporting on Alabama. ESPN Radio will have Mike Tirico calling play-by-play, Todd Blackledge as the game analyst, Holly Rowe on the Alabama sideline and Joe Schad on the Clemson sideline. Alternative viewpoints will include the Film Room on ESPN2, with Florida head coach Jim McElwain, and ESPN Voices on ESPNEWS as well as the Homer Telecast  on ESPNU, featuring Clemson’s all-time leading passer Tajh Boyd and former Alabama center and three-time national champion Barrett Jones working as quasi-‘game analysts’ along with ESPN’s Joe Tessitore calling play-by-play. Finebaum Film Room also runs on SEC Network, while ESPN Classic and ESPN3 feature sounds of the Game sans commentary.

With the NFL regular season in the books, NBC saw its 10th season of Sunday Night Football finish its run as the network’s most-watched and highest-rated SNF season ever. SNF is once again on pace to rank as primetime television’s top show for the fifth consecutive year, according to live plus same day data from Nielsen. The package averaged 22.5 million viewers in 2015 for a 6% spike and best of all-time. The program also averaged a record 13.0/22 household rating, matching the 2010 SNF season as the best for the NFL’s premier primetime package in 16 years.

Elsewhere in rating news, NBA TV had a good week with six live game telecasts that scored upticks, including Total Day growing 26% in viewership and 26% in households, and key demos swelling 37% among People 18-49, 35% with Men 18-49, and 36% among Men 18-34. In addition, the network says its prime viewership last week was up 22% over its equivalent in 2015. Overall, since the start of the NBA regular season, during prime, NBA TV is  up 2% and 9%, respectively, in total viewership and households.

NBCSN is introducing NHL Sunday Shootout to its lineup, a new 30-minute program recapping the top NHL moments of the week. The series opens the curtains on Sunday at 11:30p following Sunday Night Hockey and will follow each of NBCSN’s 12 Sunday Night Hockey matchups. Series is hosted by Dave Briggs, with insight and analysis from NBC Sports Group’s team of NHL commentators, including Jeremy Roenick, Brian Boucher, and Anson Carter.

Monster Jam unveiled its 2016 telecast slate as Feld Motor Sports and FOX Sports announced programming plans for its run this year on FS1, featuring 26 one-hour original episodes of Monster Jam action beginning on Sunday, January 17. Programming will span the 9-city tour/10-episode, points-generating Monster Jam FS1 Championship Series, which kicks off at the Atlanta Georgia Dome on Saturday and runs on Jan. 17. Scott Douglass is in the booth for play-by-play commentary of all the Monster Jam action with analyst Bob Dillner.

ESPN Films unveiled plans for new 30 for 30 projects including documentaries on the ’85 Chicago Bears and the Duke lacrosse scandal, as well as the group’s first-ever miniseries event, OJ: Made in America. The ‘85 Bears opens the books on Feb. 4 at 9p, while the Simpson slate will debut in June. “30 for 30 strives to be the gold standard of sports storytelling and continues to deliver thought-provoking documentaries that give viewers a unique point of view into a particular story,” said Connor Schell, senior vice president, ESPN Films and Original Content. “The projects coming in 2016 showcase some of our most ambitious work to date and we’re proud to work with this diverse group of incredible filmmakers who have again raised the bar when it comes to high quality storytelling.”

Not exactly unexpected, but Levi Strauss & Co. made it official, announcing that it would become an official founding legacy partner of the San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee. The Levi’s team will now work with the Host Committee to help bring football fans a variety of “exciting experiences  from live music to interactive events  throughout Super Bowl Week.” The Levi’s brand will release a limited edition Super Bowl 50 Collection, available for purchase in limited quantities during Super Bowl week. The deal will see the Levi’s brand serve as presenting sponsor of the Host Committee’s main entertainment stage  The City Stage presented by Levi’s – which will be one of the featured destinations of Super Bowl City.

Meanwhile, the NHL unveiled the League’s All-Star jerseys for 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on Jan. 31. Each All-Star jersey features the official NHL Shield infused with the Predators’ gold in the crest, constructed with reflective material which glimmers in certain light as a salute to Nashville’s “vibrant night-life scene.” The black and white color scheme in each jersey shares the colors of the keys on a piano to celebrate the city of Nashville’s “Music City” nickname.  In addition, the All-Star jerseys will feature numbers and letters designed as modern interpretations of traditional country music poster lettering. “The 2016 Honda NHL All-Star jersey pays tribute to the city of Nashville’s cultural scene, which includes the Nashville Predators,” said Brian Jennings, NHL Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President. “With creative support from Reebok’s design team, the jerseys reflect the deep bond the Predators have with the music community, the city’s growing passion for hockey and the All-Star Game’s showcase of the best players in the League.”

DIGITAL & STREAMING

On to CES. Major League Baseball is paving the road to China, announcing a deal with Le Sports for a wide-ranging partnership that will see the country’s top internet-based eco-sports company become an official strategic partner of MLB in China mainland, Hong Kong and Macau. The alliance spans a three-year period starting this month and is highlighted by live streaming of MLB games in China for the first time. Le Sports will hold exclusive media rights in China to broadcast 125 MLB games per season, along with Mandarin-language MLB programming, through its internet platform, mobile applications, and OTT Devices. The lineup includes: four HD games per week during the regular season (96 games in total), 20 HD Postseason games, the All-Star Game, Home Run Derby, and all World Series games. In addition to live streaming games, Le Sports will have rights to rebroadcast those games through video on demand. Le Sports will also invest significant marketing resources and leverage its unique digital device ecosystem to promote baseball.

Intel announced a partnership with ESPN to showcase the its technology at X Games Aspen 2016. The deal will see the Intel Curie module integrated into the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle and Men’s Snowboard Big Air competitions to offer real-time data on athlete performance such as in-air rotations, jump height, jump distance, speed, and force on landing. This access to new data will provide athletes with greater insights into their performance, provide additional metrics for on-air analysts, and change the fan experience both at home and in the stands. The competitions will be televised on ESPN and ABC.
 
In addition, Intel unveiled a deal with Red Bull Media House to demonstrate how “athletes and spectators can get information about the performance instantly with the help of Intel Curie technology, with the promise of more announcements to come in 2016 and beyond.” The company is also working with Replay Technologies to offer completely new viewing experiences for sports fans on broadcast, in the stadium, and in the home. Using Replay’s freeD technology optimized for Intel platforms, allowing sports fans will be able to re-watch key moments of sporting events from nearly every conceivable angle and share a custom created clip with the world.

ROSTER MOVES

UFC named Nakisa Bidarian as the company’s new CFO, following his run as EVP of Strategy and Business Ventures. He will now focus on key financial initiatives, strategic goals and supporting the organization’s overall growth moving forward.

Learfield Sports turned to Keisha Taylor as the new Senior Vice President-Integrated Marketing. Taylor had been with Turner Broadcasting for the past 10 years, most recently as senior director of entertainment marketing for TNT and TBS but will now oversee marketing, graphics, research, client insights and ideation, events and training.
