IN THE NEWS

Netflix spent 5% less on content in 2022, according to the streamer’s fourth-quarter earnings report – $16.84 billion versus $17.70 billion in 2021. The company also paid 5.7% less for the acquisition, licensing and production of multiyear content. Still, with new original series “Wednesday,” “Harry & Meghan,” and film “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” Netflix said in a statement that the 2022 content slate “outperformed even our high expectations.”

Netflix stock surged to new heights in a continued 9-month spike. The streamer’s stock ended last week at its highest level since April 2022, finishing at $342.50 with reports of subscriber growth.

Taylor Kinney has taken a leave of absence from “Chicago Fire” for personal reasons. Kinney has starred as firefighter Kelly Severide on the NBC drama since its 2012 debut. New episodes will premiere on February 8.

Apple canceled “The Mosquito Coast” after a two-season run. Based on the 1981 novel by Paul Theroux, the drama series adapted from the original film with Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren and River Phoenix told the story of an inventor, played by Justin Theroux, who seeks refuge for his family.

“One of Us Is Lying” and “Vampire Academy” will not return to Peacock. Based on the novel by Karen M. McManus, “One of Us Is Lying” debuted in October 2021 and ran for two seasons. “Vampire Academy” premiered in September 2022 and aired for one season.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Netflix greenlit a sixth and final season of “Cobra Kai.” Creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg called the end to the karate drama “bittersweet” news, but said, “We hope to be telling more ‘Karate Kid’ stories with you down the line because as we all know: Cobra Kai never dies.” Production is scheduled to begin this spring.

Onyx Collective is developing a Sly Stone documentary from Questlove. Directed by Questlove, the currently-untitled project will join the brand on Hulu alongside “Anthem,” from composer Kris Bowers and music producer Dahi.

Marc Munden and Fernando Meirelles are set to direct episodes of “The Sympathizer” for HBO and A24. In the adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, Robert Downey Jr. will portray more than one antagonist of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy who is subsequently exiled from the United States following the Vietnam War. Downey Jr. will also executive produce.

An urban nature docuseries is in the works from Atomic Monster and Westbrook Studios. “Concrete Jungle” is “not your typical natural history show,” according to Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Ingrid Bisu.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season 14 of “NCIS: Los Angeles” will be its last. After more than 300 episodes since its debut on CBS in September 2009, the series starring LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell will close out with a grand finale on May 14.

Comedy Central’s “South Park” will kick off season 26 on February 8. The animated series will continue its record as cable’s longest-running scripted series in its usual Wednesday night slot.

“Insecure” secured a new home at OWN. The Emmy-winning HBO original series from Issa Rae (Issa) and Yvonne Orji (Molly) that centers on Black female friendship will premiere back-to-back episodes on Tuesday nights, beginning February 7 at 9p.

SPORTS

Major League Wrestling will stream exclusively on Reelz. Programming for the company will begin on February 7 with the series “MLW Underground Wrestling,” featuring Alex Hammerstone, Taya Valkyrie, John Hennigan, Jacob Fatu and more.

GOING GLOBAL

“Deal Or No Deal” will have a UK revival on ITV after a seven-year hiatus. A pilot hosted by Stephen Mulhern (“Britain’s Got More Talent”) was released last year and will now develop into a full series, produced by Remarkable of Banijay UK.
