IN THE NEWS

The two-episode premiere of NBC’s “Night Court” reboot won the highest ratings for a comedy debut in over five years for the network. The first episode of the original series in 1984 was the highest-rated and most-watched program of the night, according to Nielsen, and the same was true nearly four decades later. The first episode of the night on Thursday averaged 7.4 total viewers, while the second delivered 6.7 million viewers.

Business must be good, as Netflix has ordered an additional two seasons of “Selling the OC.” The streamer announced the renewal on Wednesday, with production expected to begin this winter.

Paramount+ renewed “SEAL Team” for a seventh season. The military drama that follows an elite unit of Navy SEALs debuted on CBS before moving to the streaming platform, along with the supernatural drama “Evil.” The upcoming season will be the series’ third to air on Paramount+. A spinoff film, announced last February, is expected to proceed as planned.

AMC Networks will hold an upfront event on Tuesday, April 18 at Jazz at Lincoln Center for 200-250 senior-level clients and talent, along with a series of in-person and virtual custom agency presentations in the ensuing weeks. “We are looking forward to the most innovative and future-facing upfront in our history, with a focus on partnering with marketers around targeted audiences, creative ad products and an exciting slate of high-quality programming that will build on our proven ability to engage passionate fan communities around compelling franchises and universes,” said Kim Kelleher, Chief Commercial Officer, AMC Networks. “We look forward to rolling out a new innovative suite of products and opportunities in this upfront that put our advertising and marketing partners first.”

The Advertising Research Foundation has added new corporate partners for its Workforce Initiative for Diversity and Excellence scholar program, including Google, Meta, ESPN, UnitedHealth Group, and Analytic Partners. Additionally, ARF has expanded its list of partner schools with Baruch College at the City University of New York. Baruch joins The University of California, Berkeley (College of Letters & Science), John Jay College of Criminal Justice at CUNY, The Ohio State University (Fisher College of Business), and the University of Wisconsin Madison (A.C. Nielsen Center for Marketing Analytics and Insights).“Our goal from the inception of this program has been to not only create opportunities for students looking to work in the field of market research, but enrich our industry with deeply needed diverse, representative perspectives,” said Scott McDonald, president and CEO at the ARF. “It feels like we are making great progress towards realizing this more inclusive future

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jump shots and time leaps: The storyline for the second season of Apple TV+’s “Swagger,” inspired by Kevin Durant’s experiences in youth basketball, will follow the characters into adulthood, on and off the court. Said creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood, “One of the realities when you have a certain time between season 1 and season 2, my young actors, they keep growing. They went from children to grown men and grown women. So it was actually more authentic to reflect that.”

Rodney Barnes will write and executive produce the limited series starring Mahershala Ali as Jack Johnson. Barnes replaced Dominique Morisseau as the writer for the untitled six-part HBO limited series that will depict the world’s first Black Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Ali and his wife Amatus Karim Ali will executive produce with the actor’s production company Know Wonder and their producing partner Mimi Valdés.

Fox is developing an undercover FBI drama from Joy Blake, the Nacelle Company and Fox Entertainment Studios. The untitled project will follow a female FBI agent enduring a career burnout tasked with training a new batch of rookies.

Starz has renewed “BMF.” Less than two weeks after the crime show’s season two premiere, Starz greenlit a third season for the series starring Demetrius Flenory, Jr., Da’Vinchi and Snoop Dogg.

Paul Walker’s brother and sister-in-law will star in “Fast: Home Rescue.” Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group will develop the home renovation series centered on families that have been affected by natural disasters, with Cody and Felicia Walker, and Paul Walker’s organization Reach Out Worldwide. Paul Walker, star of “The Fast and the Furious,” died at age 40 in a car accident.

COMING UP

“A Tribute to Jackie Robinson” premieres on Raycom Sports on February 4. The special based on interviews with Black MLB players who were contemporaries of Robinson is one of the first productions resulting from the acquisition last year by Raycom Sports of the Jim Moskovitz Sports Archives of unedited and previously broadcast interviews. The division of Gray Television will spotlight the special on all Gray stations, CBS-TV O & O’s and other station groups, including Sinclair, on a repeated basis from noon to 6p on weekends between February 4-26.

“Rain Dogs” makes its debut on HBO on March 6. The eight-episode original dark comedy from BBC One and Sid Gentle Films Ltd. is an unconventional love story between a working-class mother and a high-class homosexual man.

The cast of “All That” will reunite for 90s Con in March. Former series cast member Amanda Bynes will make her first convention appearance at the That’s4Entertainment weekend-long event on March 17-19 in Hartford, Connecticut, along with Lori Beth Denberg, Danny Tamberelli and Kel Mitchell.

STREAMING

The 80th Golden Globes brought in 33 million minutes of viewing on Peacock in the first two days on the platform. That’s a 245% increase from the 2021 ceremony, though that year the show was only available as video on demand and not in real time.

Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing might not lead to as big a loss in viewers as expected, suggests a new study by Horowitz Research. Horowitz’s State of OTA 2022 found that 7 out of 10 Netflix users who password share would be willing to pay full price for the service if they could no longer share access. The more valuable the service is perceived to be, the less likely it is that consumers will share their passwords – and 83% of Netflix users (and 81% of Amazon Prime Video users) think the services offer excellent value for the money. The challenge for Netflix is to keep its perceived value high in order for consumers to continue to justify the investment, notes Adriana Waterston, Chief Revenue Officer and Insights & Strategy Lead for Horowitz Research. “This will certainly be a challenge for Netflix moving forward as their programming costs continue to increase and as they add commercials,” said Waterston. “Also, other services considering a similar crackdown will need to justify this move by finding ways to add value to their services, making them stickier for consumers.”

Also at Netflix, the streamer expanded its measurement deal with Nielsen to include national TV and streaming TV content program data in the US. For audiences in Mexico and Poland, Netflix will incorporate cross-platform insights from streaming panels in each market.

Phil Gurin launched the global distribution company TGC Global Entertainment. The company’s curated slate will include a collection of entertainment, factual and documentary formats, series and specials of international appeal. Gurin, founder of The Gurin Company, says the new company will provide direct access and format representation to US and European broadcast and cable networks.

SPORTS

The BBC acquired the rights to a nine-game NBA package. Beginning with a faceoff between longtime rivals Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons in Paris, the BBC will air four regular season games, two playoff games, one Conference Finals game and one NBA Finals game, as per the recent agreement.

Jimmy Fox’s Main Event Media joined the Religion of Sports team in a multi-year exclusive production deal. The production company will be a label under the banner of Religion of Sports, the sports media company founded by NFL champions Gotham Chopra, Tom Brady and Michael Strahan, as the company continues to develop across genres.

Telemundo Deportes inked a multiyear, Spanish-language rights deal with the US Soccer Federation. The partnership will continue through the next FIFA World Cup in 2026, and will include 20 US Men’s and Women’s national team matches each year. TelevisaUnivision was the previous partner of US Soccer, from 2015 until 2022.

TECH TALK

Kantar has launched Vivvix, a new operationally independent brand within the Kantar Group, specializing in syndicated competitive advertising intelligence across digital and traditional media, including mobile apps, streaming, and social media. Vivvix brings together what was previously Kantar Media’s syndicated media coverage with Numerator’s advertising creative data intelligence platform. “We understand the speed and competitiveness of the advertising market,” said Andrew Feigenson, CEO at Vivvix. “For the last year, the businesses in North America have been working to bring together all the ad intel specializations of Kantar Media and Numerator to enable clients to make swift decisions about competitive maneuvers and where to place their ad dollars. In what is going to be another dynamic year in the advertising industry, we are here to provide advertisers, agencies and media owners with the clarity they need to win.”

Clinch announced the launch of the Figma-Clinch Exporter Plugin, which enables designers to import their Figma designs into Flight Control for efficient dynamic ad creation. Flight Control offers users flexibility and control over the campaign activation process, including creative authoring, mapping, and ad serving. Using the plugin, designers can seamlessly and directly import multi-layout/multi-layer design compositions to Flight Control, improving a campaign’s speed to market by reducing the number of steps required to produce creative variations.

Amazon plans to lay off 18,000 employees. In this next round of layoffs, which CEO Andy Jassy warned about earlier this month, the cuts will be the e-commerce company’s largest workforce reduction in its history, according to a report from CNBC.

CASTING

Anthony Hopkins is set to star in “Those About to Die.” Peacock’s upcoming period drama series from Roland Emmerich centers on the gladiatorial arena; the Oscar winner will play Emperor Vespasian, an aging ruler in Ancient Rome.

Martha Plimpton has joined Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant in “The Palace.” The HBO limited series from “Succession” creators Will Tracy and Frank Rich, “The Queen” director Stephen Frears and Co-EP Jessica Hobbs, will tell the stories that take place within a palace under an authoritarian regime.

Bethlehem Million has been cast in “The Good Doctor” legal spinoff, “The Good Lawyer.” The “Sick” actor joins Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman in the upcoming series from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature.

GOING GLOBAL

Warner Bros. Discovery offered UK and Ireland staff a lump payment to offset the cost of living. WBD said that a “considerable number of employees” earning less than £60,000 will receive the money and a free lunch once a week, among other benefits, beginning in February until April, to combat the UK’s inflated cost of living crisis. A spokeswoman for WBD said, “We continue to look at ways to offer support that can make a material difference to the everyday cost of living.”
