Cyn opsis: Kids!

10/16/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 16, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The Entertainment Software Association has laid out more details for the E3 Media and Business Summit, its new version of E3Expo, which will be held July 11-13, 2007 in Santa Monica, California.  The ESA is looking to fold some of the best segments of E3Expo into the new event.  E3Expo took place in California annually for 12 years and became the video game industry’s biggest event of the year.  The ESA goal is to make the invitation only event a more intimate and personal one, where smaller meetings can be held in hotel suites and attendees can attend lunch conferences, while companies can still hold major press events and nighttime parties.  In addition the ESA says there will be a full software showcase that will take place at the Barker Hangar.

TOKYOPOP is stepping into the world of indie movie production with its first project Lament of the Lamb, which is currently in development.  A psychological horror story (read: not for the kinderfolk), Lament of the Lamb is based on the manga series of the same name, which was created by Kei Toume and originally published in Japan by Gentosha.  Produced by Stu Levy, CEO/CCO, TOKYOPOP, the Lament of the Lamb movie project will be featured next week at the 2006 Tokyo International Film Festival.  Sony Screen Gems and Focus Features recently acquired the movie rights to TOKYOPOP’s manga series Priest and Pet Shop Horror, respectively.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Anime Network will host the US VOD TV premiere of the new version of the noted sci-fi anime series Guyver, episode #1, from ADV Films, on October 26.  The first volume of the Guyver DVD will be released the following month on November 14.  This is not a series for younger kids.

MARKETING/LICENSING

DreamWorks Animation has launched the website for its animated short, First Flight ( www.firstflightshort.com ).  At the First Flight website visitors can view an exclusive clip from the short and find out more about the animation and creators.  The site also includes a list of screenings at upcoming movie festivals.  Created by DreamWorks’ Cameron Hood and Kyle Jefferson, First Flight was produced by Maryann Garger and co-produced by Pilar Flynn.  First Flight ran prior to DreamWorks Animation’s CG animated feature film Over the Hedge, which was released May 19 2006, in some 400 movie theaters in NY and LA.

Classic Media will release the entire collection of Harveytoon cartoons, all 312 animated shorts, in The Complete Harveytoon Collection DVD set on November 7, 2006.  Produced in the 1940s and ’50s, the Harveytoon toons have been digitally restored and compiled in the new 4-disc DVD set, and this is the first time the cartoons have been released.  Harveytoon cartoons include Casper The Friendly Ghost, Richie Rich, Herman and Katnip, and The Modern Madcaps.

STONE SOUP

Animax Entertainment and the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation have launched a group of new animated websites specifically for kids/tweens with chronic and life-threatening conditions.  The sites are designed to present medical information in an age appropriate and non-threatening way in an effort to educate kids about their respective conditions and treatment plans.  The websites are comprised of a range of content, much of which comes from a series of Starlight Starbright CD-ROMs, which Animax developed for use online.  The various sites include those focusing on sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis and cancer, kidney disease, radiology and blood tests, among others.  Start here:  http://bloodtests.starlightprograms.org .  This project is part of Animax’s health and education division.  Animax other youth health related projects include eyesight care the American Optometric Assoc., asthma treatment for the U of Texas Medical Branch, and potty training for Sesame Workshop.
