Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, February 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Disney’s new 3D movie, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour was released in just 683 3D theaters this weekend to the largest open ever for a Super Bowl weekend, earning $29 million, per Box Office Mojo‘s movie studio estimates.  The movie displaced the previous Super Bowl weekend title holder, Titanic (1998), which was earned $25.2 million over what was its 6th weekend in release.  Though the studio had planned to have the movie in release for a week, after this weekend’s box office take the studio has decided to extend the movie’s theatrical run.  Directed by Bruce Hendricks, and produced by Art Repola, the movie was also produced by director Kenny Ortega (High School Musical movies).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Breakthrough Animation is currently in production on episodes of the animated series Atomic Betty and Captain Flamingo:

  • Season 3 of Atomic Betty (26×30, for a total of 78×30) takes place right here on earth, as tween-aged Betty works to battle aliens, get her homework done and maybe squeeze in a date.  The new season is scheduled to debut on Canada’s Teletoon late spring/early summer 2008, with a new series of Atomic Betty webisodes (26×1), featuring original content, slated to bow on Teletoon’s website simultaneously.  Breakthrough Animation produces the new season of Atomic Betty with Teleimages Kids and Atomic Cartoons in association with Teletoon Canada.  Breakthrough is on the search for a new US broadcast deal for the property.
  • New Captain Flamingo episodes and new multiplatform content launched on Jetix/Toon Disney last week. While the series continues to air on YTV (Canada) and other channels worldwide, Breakthrough is in production on a group of Captain Flamingo webisodes, which will bow first on YTV, Jetix Europe and Jetix US.  Captain Flamingo is produced by Breakthrough Animation, Heroic Film Company, Atomic Cartoon and PASI Animation.

Following commissions from Teletoon Canada inc., Fresh TV Inc. has begun production on Stoked (26×30), a new animated surfing show for tweens, a fourth seasons of 6TEEN (13×30) and Total Drama Action (26×30), a sequel to Total Drama Island, plus a Total Drama Island special (1×60) episode to air fall 2008.  Stoked is targeted to K8-12, the series revolves around 5 teens that work and live together one summer at a beach resort and surf on their days off.  The series will air on both English and French Teletoon networks in 2009.  Elliott Animation, Fresh’s production facility in Toronto, is producing all three shows.  Nelvana distributes 6TEEN and Cake Distribution distributes Total Drama Action. A distribution partner for Stoked has yet to be announced.

Cyberchase new initiative Builder’s Math, designed to explore math and problem solving, premieres the week of February 19, with several new episodes of the series.  Additionally, supporting Builder’s Math is a new 3D game called U Fix It, which debuts online at Cyberchase online ( www.pbskidsgo.org/cyberchase).

Nick Jr. celebrates Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2008, (9a-2p) with love-themed programming, including a new episode of Yo Gabba Gabba! (11:30a).  The Yo Gabba Gabba! episode features a performance by the Postmarks and Mark Mothersbaugh shows viewers how to draw an elephant in his “Mark’s Magic Pictures” segment.

MARKETING/LICENSING

DwellStudio, a designer/manufacturer of home modern furnishings, is launching a new home and baby collection exclusively at Target stores and Target.com.  The new DwellStudio for Target line is comprised of graphic and multi-colored bed linens for adults and nurseries and nursery furniture, baby layette, including nightlights, pillows, wall decals, blankets, and soft toys, among other products, as well as a range of accessories for the kitchen and table.  The deal was put together by DwellStudio’s Heidi Packer Eskenazi.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

CBS Consumer Products names Keith Lowenadler as VP/Creative and PJ Pierce as Director/Licensing.  In his new position Lowenadler will create merchandising programs for CBS’s primetime and classic properties (America’s Next Top Model, Mighty Mouse, Star Trek).  Lowenadler joins CBS from Sesame Workshop where he was Creative Director/Packaging and Advertising, Packaged Foods and Theme Parks.  Pierce will be responsible for developing branded licensing partnerships in apparel, accessories and related categories for CBS’ properties.  Pierced previously oversaw the global licensing division for JLO by Jennifer Lopez brand, Sweetface Fashion Company.

Razor & Tie Entertainment ups Edith Bellinghausen to SVP/Digital Business and Tim Foisset to Sr. Director/Digital, both work out of the NYC headquarters.  Bellinghausen was most recently VP/New Media, she will report to Victor Zaraya, SVP/Finance/Operations.  Foisset reports to both Michael Krumper SVP/Marketing and Bellinghausen.
