Cynopsis: Kids!

12/15/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 15, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Entertainment Rights Plc has entered into a deal to acquire US-based Classic Media Holdings, Inc. for $210 million US dollars. Under the agreement ER plans include further exploiting Classic Media’s existing catalogue to create new revenue streams including the expansion of Classic’s licensing, music and new technology opportunities. ER’s kids/teens/family portfolio of characters and brands, which already features Postman Pat, Rupert Bear and Transformers among others, will grow to include Classic Media’s properties such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, VeggieTales, Lassie, and The Lone Ranger to name a few. When the deal is completed the group’s combined portfolio will include some 8,700 episodes of programming targeted to a range of demos including preschoolers, kids, teens and families.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. is in talks with director Guillermo del Toro to helm a new adaptation of the Tarzan story, to be produced by Jerry Weintraub, per Variety. As for the screenplay for Tarzan, talks are reportedly underway with John Collee, who wrote Happy Feet for Warner Bros. Chicagoan Edgar Rice Burroughs created Tarzan, character and stories.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The nominees for The 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced yesterday, which in and of itself isn’t unusual as it occurs this time of year, every year. The Golden Globes will be handed out during a live broadcast on NBC, January 15, at 8p. What is unique is this year, however, is the introduction of the new Best Animated Feature Film category. And the nominees are:

  • Cars
  • Happy Feet
  • Monster House

While the Hollywood Foreign Press has in the recent past honored animated feature films in the Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) category including Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Chicken Run and Shrek among others, this is the first time that a Golden Globe will be handed out specifically for excellence in an animated feature film. The new category was established this time last year with the following guidelines: a film must be feature-length (70 minutes or more) with no more than 25% live action content; if fewer than eight films qualify, the award will not be given in that year – allowing animated films for that year to be eligible for Best Picture; if there is animation category those movies are not eligible for Best Picture; the animation category may include only three titles per year.

The new TV series, Cory in the House, a spin-off of That’s So Raven, is set to premiere Friday, January 12, at 9:30p on Disney Channel. The series follows Cory Baxter and his scheming ways, when he and his dad, Victor, move to Washington DC where his dad has taken a new job as the personal chef of the President of the US. Once in DC, Cory must adapt to both his new prep school and his new home, which happens to be in the White House. Created and executive produced by Dennis Rinsler and Marc Warren, Cory in the House is based on characters created by Michael Poryes and Susan Sherman.

Trekkie fans take note: beginning today at 12p PT/3p ET CBS Paramount Television and It’s A Wrap! will host an online auction of Star Trek props and wardrobe items on eBay.com and at itsawraphollywood.com. The objects for sale are from the 10 Star Trek films and five television series. Don’t go crazy now, but remember, tis the gift-giving holiday season ….

MARKETING/LICENSING

DreamWorks Animation has updated the website for the Shrek the Third animated feature and once there you’ll find the new movie trailer as well as new information and downloads (www.shrekthethird.com). Directed by Chris Miller and Raman Hui from a screenplay by Peter Seaman and Jeffrey Price, Shrek the Third is scheduled for release May 18, 2007.

National Instruments, a virtual instrumentation company, has released its NI LabVIEW Toolkit for LEGO Mindstorms NXT, the next of the LEGO Mindstorms robotic systems. With the toolkit, LabVIEW users can create and download VIs to operate and control the Mindstorms NXT robotic platform. Additionally, third party software and hardware developers can also use the toolkit to create “native blocks” for Mindstorms NXT software. Aimed at Kids 10-14, the new Mindstorms NXT software was developed by The LEGO Group and National Instruments.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Lisa Hallond has been appointed COO, Ty’s Toy Box, LLC, an online retailer of licensed kid’s brands. Holland will work with the other senior managers of the company to align short-term priorities with long-term goals and further developing and implementing strategic plans. Hallond joined Ty’s Toy Box as a licensing consultant and strategist in August 2005. She previously toiled as a category manager in Disney’s toy licensing group.
