Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage
09.08.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, September 1, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
“Success used to come from self improvement, now it comes from self-packaging.”
Snide? Yes. False? Not entirely.
The American Marketing Association (AMA) defines branding as “name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers.” Personal branding goes one step further – having your target audience see you not only as the best person to manage their needs, but as the only reasonable choice to solve their needs.
- Determine your strength, what is it that you do better than anyone. This can include any number of skills.
- Be proficient enough at your chosen skill to be seen as a leader within your community. Answer questions, look to help others, offer your wisdom freely.
- Write, write, and then write some more. Submit your writings everywhere. Set up your own website and blog as often as possible.
- Get on panels and offer to make speeches at industry gatherings. One really good, original idea/speech can serve many occasions.
- Syndicate your ideas in a unique manner. You can’t say the same things in the same ways as others and get noticed.
- Your ideas should be seen by as many people as possible. Social Media – Facebook has 45 million daily users. Set up a business-centric account that allows all to read but set up privacy so no one can tag you in an image. Twitter often and follow many. Become an expert in LinkedIn and answer as many questions as possible. This will also enhance being perceived as a leader.
- Present a consistent image of yourself. Use the same photo in all social media, blogging, business card etc.
- Be approachable. Do all interviews, answer all questions, return all emails.
- Be visible. Go to trade shows, conventions, any industry gatherings. Talk to as many industry leaders as you can, but more importantly, listen to them.
- Be patient. This process is not a quick one. It can take months to see results.
- You must have a positive public persona. Your public persona will be tied to the ideas you are expressing. If you are a hothead, you and your ideas will lose credibility.
Mixed Bag on the Unemployment Report
The August jobless rate increased to 9.7%, the highest levels since 1983, a higher than expected number. However, the amount of jobs lost in the same time period was 216,000, the lowest amount since August 2008.
There’s usually a two-quarter lag between the end of a recession and a recovery in the labor market. For now, “businesses are doing far less firing. But they’re still reluctant to hire,” says Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services Group.
In another sign that the worst may be over, The Institute for Supply Management reported Tuesday that manufacturing expanded in August for the first time in more than a year and a half.

The Power of Good Interviewing Skills
By Fred Silverman
You don’t have to be a reporter to have or need good interviewing skills. In fact, everyone should learn how to conduct an interview. Why? How else will you find out what a boss expects of you? What a client needs? Or, what your spouse wants you to pick up on the way home?
This isn’t brain surgery, but you do need to know the right questions to ask and then have the ability to listen to what the person is saying.
One place good interviewing skills come into play is when you meet people with whom you want to do business. Whether you’re trying to land a new client or looking for a job. It’s absolutely essential to know how to ask questions that may help you understand what their needs are and then learn to listen effectively. So, you’ll be able to tell someone about what you have to offer in a way that will relate specifically to his or her business. It will send a signal to that person that you heard what they were saying and could respond to it. Now, you don’t want to come across as if you’re conducting a cross-examination. But, you do want to have a conversation that will help you pitch your services in a way that will interest that person.
You want to ask open-ended questions that elicit more than just a one-word response. For example, in a job interview it’s valid to ask your interviewer to describe the culture at their company. If you meet someone with whom you’re trying to do business, you’ll want to get him to talk about his job and his company so you can learn how your services might fit into their needs. Simple statements like, “Tell me about your business,” can often be the most effective. You’re trying to get the person with whom you’re speaking to open up a bit about what he or she does.

Next week: 5 Tips For a Great Elevator Pitch
If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
Questions from our Readers
Answered by Fred Silverman
In light of the flow of work to web-based media, what advice is there for what kind of skills would be useful to have and the best places to go about acquiring them. How important is it for a TV producer to get to know, say, Java or HTML or CSS?
It’s pretty clear that many of the new opportunities in the media business will be web related. I believe the use of Social Media outlets will continue to explode. I also believe that it is important to continue to learn no matter what business you’re in. So, it will be essential to learn as much as you can about operating in this new media space. Learning Java, HTML or CSS is a good idea. Learn how to convert videos into various multi-media formats. It may also be worth educating yourself on web building software like Dreamweaver. The more willing you are to educate yourself, the more useful you’ll become to an employer. Community colleges generally offer courses to learn these skills. Also, check with your local computer stores for learning opportunities. At the very least, employees may be able to point you in the right direction.
What are some ways to network if most of your contacts are starting families and are no longer in the business? My second question is if your interested in Producing on a reality show, how does one go about it?
There are a number of ways you can expand your professional network. 1. Your contacts who have left the business will probably still know other people still in the business. Ask for an introduction. Tell your contacts you’re trying to expand your network and want to continue to grow in the business.
2. Join Social Media networks like Linked In or Twitter or Facebook. Join groups on those sites and you’ll be exposed to people with similar interests. 3. Attend networking events in or outside the business. Put yourself out there. Meet new people. You never know when a casual introduction will turn into a meaningful business relationship.
When you do meet new people, it’s essential you have your “elevator pitch” honed and ready to use. Be able to describe yourself in 30 seconds or less so you’ll peak curiosity and make a positive impression.
As for finding a job producing on a reality show, check the various job boards like www.realitystaff.com or www.mandy.com (there are a number of others). Or, you could research the name of production companies that produce reality programming and call directly. Networking is also a good idea. If you can, attend shows like NATPE or Reel Screen to meet people in the industry.
If you don’t feel comfortable putting yourself out there just yet, consultants like me offer individual and group coaching sessions to help you improve your skills.
