Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, September 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

The first programming change of the season … and we’ve only just started!  Fox has pulled Nashville off the Friday night lineup, replacing it with repeats of K-Ville for the next two weeks before baseball kicks in on October 12th.  Mindful tho – the show has not been cancelled, merely delayed until after the baseball season.

Nielsen Media Research has a new rule — if a network airs a show more than once (be it on broadcast or cable or a combination of both), and all of the commercials in both broadcasts are identical, then the network can combine the rating of both airings into one single rating attributed to the first broadcast.  Furthermore, the second airing will not show up as a stand alone broadcast in the weekly ratings report.  Consider that – and how NBC has chosen to capitalize on the new rule which was announced earlier this year, but just went into effect last Monday.  Heroes debuted on Monday night with a single sponsor, Nissan.  The show will air again on Saturday night on NBC, again with the single sponsor.  That means in the weekly ratings, Heroes will show up only once, and will be reported with the combined Monday / Saturday rating. The second airing stand-alone ratings will never be reported. Now, sit back and watch the fireworks.

Network Evening News Ratings Update: Just 30,000 total viewers separated ABC and NBC last week, as the network’s flagship newscasts continue to battle it out. The results from the week of September 17, 2007 are:
ABC: 7.69 million total viewers; 1.9/8 A25-54
NBC: 7.66 million total viewers; 1.9/8 A25-54
CBS: 6.05 million total viewers; 1.5/6 A25-54
 
HGTV has a new half-hour series in production at City Lights Television. The Fixer, with licensed general contractor Peter Marr in charge, will help homeowners who have been the victim of careless and dodgy contractors. The new show is slated to premiere next year.
 
TV One will begin its primetime talk/variety series Baisden After Dark October 7 at 10p. The 13-episode series stars Michael Baisden, author and “Bad Boy of Radio”, who will lead a wide range of provocative topics. Each show will feature Michael in an opening monologue, followed by a celebrity roundtable discussion on one main topic with input from the studio audience, along with Man on the Street segments from comedian George Wilborn and Morris Day serving as bandleader and sidekick.
 
MyNetworkTV and the International Fight League will broadcast the World Grand Prix semi-finals live from the Sears Centre in Chicago on November 3 at 8p. This is the first time a Mixed Martial Arts fight will be presented live in primetime on broadcast television. The semi-finals will feature Chris Horodecki and Bart Palaczewski duking it out as well as the bout between Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson.
 
MTV debuts the new reality series Pageant Place on October 10 at 1030p. During the 8-episode series viewers will get to see what happens after the beauty pageant is over as Riyo Mori – Miss Universe, Rachel Smith – Miss USA and Katie Blair – Miss Teen USA will room together for a year in a New York City high-rise apartment. Later on the three will be joined by 2007 Miss Teen USA Hilary Cruz and former Miss USA 2006 Tara Conner. Donald Trump, co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization will stop by to check-in and offer advice. The series is executive produced by Evolution Film & Tape, Inc., The Miss Universe Organization and Trump Productions.
 
IMHO:  Dancing with the Guys – there isn’t, or shouldn’t be, a dance move that involves double fisted pointed and winking; NCIS has a great opening 20 minutes; I wouldn’t want to be on House’s team, but sure do like watching him; anticipation of Cane kept me up until 10p, show put me to sleep midway thru.  I’m just sayin’.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FX has ordered up a new project called Queen B from 20th Century Fox TV, which sounds a little like The Devil Wears Prada meets FX’s Damages.  The premise is a powerful woman takes over as CEO of a mega-huge worldwide company, and then corrupts a younger female colleague with power. The lead role has not yet been cast, tho Hollywood Reporter reports there is plenty of interest from the 40+ group.

Mark Burnett is quickly becoming the exec producer with a game show on nearly every broadcast network.  He’s busy with a new one for NBC called My Dad is Better than Your Dad, this time teamed up with Reveille, reports Variety.  NBC has ordered 8 episodes. The show will be produced by Burnett Prods, Reveille and Hotchkiss Industries.

Zip is a new comedy project at NBC about a down and own guy, who ends up living just fine in Beverly Hills.  The project is from Reveille and Universal Media Studios. The network has given Zip a cast-contingent order.

Fox is looking at a UK series for direction on a new drama called Ghost Squad.  The show is about an undercover and never-spoken-of police unit at the Chicago Police Department.  The original series airs on UK’s Channel 4 and stars Elaine Cassidy, per Hollywood Reporter.

MarVista Entertainment announced a number of new appointments:

  • D. Douglas Hill, CPA will be the company’s Controller to streamline all accounting functions.
  • Sara Rutenberg was named SVP/Business Affairs and will be involved with the negotiation of production and distribution agreements for all media platforms, acquisition agreements and original productions.
  • Shannon Humphries was promoted to Director/Business Administration to maintain contracts and manage licensee accounts. Shannon reports to Sara Rutenberg.
  • Charlie Hwang is the new Director/Technical Services and will manage all technical issues pertaining to original programming and third party acquisitions.
  • Michael Wilson was made Manager/Acquisitions and is charged with acquiring independently produced films and television programs for the company’s U.S. home entertainment label and global distribution.

fuse hired Carol Goll as SVP/Marketing where she will lead the repositioning and strategic brand vision for the network. In addition she will oversee all communication efforts to consumers, affiliates, advertisers and the music industry and the development and execution of marketing efforts.

Paula Kaplan appointed EVP/Talent and West Coast GM, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  Kaplan, who joined the company in 1993, will continue to head talent and casting across all platforms as well as its other brands The N, Nick at Nite, and Noggin.  She will also expand watch to oversee talent development and music A&R, and be a member of the team establishing Nickelodeon’s music brand and related initiatives.

Former Columbia Pictures executive Amy Baer was named President for CBS Films, the new film unit of CBS Corporation. She will develop the creative direction for the division and will manage the development, production, acquisition, distribution and marketing of its films. Amy will report to Leslie Moonves, President/CEO, CBS Corporation.

John Cuddihy moved up to President/Managing Director of Lightworks Program Distribution (LPD). John will continue managing the daily operations of LPD and his promotion is effective immediately.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  ABC sashayed to #1 Monday night at 4.7/12 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. During 8p, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars season premiere was the big success with 5.7/15, followed by the series debut of NBC’s Chuck at 3.6/9 and new CBS sitcoms: How I Met Your Mother at 3.2/9 and The Big Bang Theory at 3.7/9. Then at 9p, NBC led with the season return of Heroes at 6.5/15, with ABC next for the last 30m of Dancing/Stars and the start of The Bachelor averaging a 4.8/11 and CBS in third with its comedies Two and a Half Men at 4.7/11 and Rules of Engagement at 4.4/10. CBS led at 10p with the premiere of CSI: Miami earning a 4.6/12, followed by the new NBC series Journeyman at 3.7/9, and ABC’s The Bachelor at 3.5/9.
