Cynopsis: DIGITAL

09/24/08

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, September 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Move over Apple. T-Mobile and Google took the wraps off of the G1, the first smart phone that will run off Google’s open source Android mobile operating system. The phone, compatible with T-Mobile’s new 3G network, features a touch screen that slides up to reveal a full keypad. A specially designed Google search interface will act as your portal to the mobile internet, of course, and give users access to their Gmail accounts for no extra charge. And it’s a bit cheaper than the iPhone: the G1 will sell for $179 with a two-year commitment with T-Mobile.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The NHL is ready for the face off of a new season offering up a newly redesigned NHL.com and full season online game subscriptions for the first time, hoping to serve fans who grew up in hockey towns but who have since moved away. The games won’t be cheap – GameCenter Live will cost $169 for a full season of (blackout restricted) games or $159 if you sign up before Oct. 15. But the interface will feature the option to view multiple camera angles or to watch up to 4 games at once. The GameCenter portal will also serve data and social networking needs providing video highlights, real-time stats, audio feeds and access to NHL Network original programming. The Single Sign-On feature (SSO) will provide a personalized experience in every content area on the site, including editorial, multimedia, images, product and service offerings.

Never one to fear experimentation, Lisa Kudrow is headlining Web Therapy – the first major project to be featured on a new broadband channel funded by Lexus dubbed L Studio, per THR. She plays a psychotherapist who conducts (perfect-for-the-web) 3-minute therapy sessions via webcam that do little for her clients except save them gas and parking fees. Her clients include Bob Balaban, Jane Lynch, Rashida Jones, Tim Bagley. L Studio is also planning a scripted series called Puppy Love from Sex and The City showrunner Amy B. Harris. The site was produced by Intelligent Life Productions and Team One advertising.

Meanwhile Gwyneth Paltrow has thrown her hat in the ring with Goop.com, a stylishly designed lifestyle site designed to help her fans “nourish the inner aspect”” of life.

Netflix
boosted its library of TV shows signing new content deals with CBS and Disney-ABC Television Group’s Disney Channel offering shows that have been available on the iTunes platform. Titles, available via Netflix’ subscription-based streaming service, include Numb3rs, NCIS and the CSI franchises from CBS and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Wizards of Waverly Place from Disney Channel.

Time Inc.
and recently sold Getty Images are building a photo rich website around the Life magazine brand featuring access to thousands of stills from both Life’s and Getty’s archives. Consumers will be able to print select photos or share them with friends and family as well as play casual games and create collections of photos around special interests. The new site, designed with Getty Images’ proprietary search technology, is slated to launch in early 2009.

Movie critic Leonard Maltin is hosting a new original series for multiplatform channel ReelzChannel called Secret’s Out that digs up lost movie gems that were neglected at the time of their release. He will also recommend titles currently showing on cable or satellite. Secret’s Out will be featured on Borders Media’s Backlot, one of the broadband channels featured on the Ann Arbor, MI-based bookseller website.

3D fans can look for Harry Potter and The Blood Prince to play in their local IMAX theaters. The Warner Bros. release will be the next Hollywood blockbuster to be adapted into the IMAX DMR format.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Online gaming company Trion World Network closed on a whopping $70 million in series C funding with investments from Time Warner, Berteslmann and NBCU & GE’s Peacock Equity fund. Trion is currently at work with NBCU’s Sci Fi network on a TV pilot and game scheduled to launch in 2010. The company operates a server-based game service that requires players to download client software onto their PCs enabling various business models including subscriptions, micro-transactions and targeted advertising.

Filmaka unveils its newest competition for creators today as its member filmmakers get the chance to write and direct a series of short films dubbed Mustang Stories to promote the latest release of Ford’s iconic sports car in 2010. New York-based Zack Resnicoff and LA-based Sonny Calderon will introduce a preview of their film during the premiere of NBC’s car themed Knight Rider tonight at 8p/7c. After the broadcast, viewers can watch their film Numskull, one of many shorts in the works competing to win the rights to produce the Ford project.

Online video sharing site Dailymotion added a new subtitling tool allowing users to add text for the benefit of foreign language speakers and deaf viewers. The subtitles are also dynamic, facilitating links to other videos on the site.

Twitter
is powering a cool new mash-up feature on Current on Friday called Hack The Debate (how’s that for a provocative title) that integrates real time “tweets” over major portions of a live broadcast. Viewers can watch the first major debate between John McCain and Barack Obama and use the microblogging service to comment live on what’s being said. Current says it will only edit out comments that fail to meet standards and practices thresholds. (ie: no 4 letter words.)

NBC is whipping up interest in the premiere of a new season of The Office by organizing premiere parties in 26 U.S. cities, put together through the mock social network Dunder Mifflin Infinity. NBC.com is supplying party packs to the first 50 established parties and will work with local affiliates in the host cities to help coordinate the soirees.

Broadband service Joost beefed up its anime category in a new deal with Viz Media, which licensed full episodes of Naruto, Death Note and Bleach for streaming in the U.S.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Developers are also suddenly lining up to design games and other solutions for Google’s soon to launch Android mobile platform:

  • Gameloft announced plans to develop 10+ games for Android, Bubble Bash will be the first title scheduled for launch in Q1 2009
  • Glu Mobile says its new puzzle game Bonsai Blast will launch on Android as an exclusive
  • PacketVideo delivered a portion of its CORE software to the Android mobile platform. CORE is a multimedia application framework that powers more than 260 million devices worldwide for mobile operators such as Verizon, Orange and NTT DoCoMo

AT&T U-verse debuted its “Total Home” DVR service in L.A., St. Louis and Fresno, CA enabling standard and HD DVR playback on any connected television in the home without additional charge. Users can set their DVRs from a PC or wireless phone via AT&T Yahoo! Web and Mobile Remote Access and record up to four programs at once.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The Associated Press selected Comcast subsidiary thePlatform to replace Microsoft in powering a newly enhanced version of its Online Video Network, which syndicates video content to more than 2,000 partner sites across the country. The OVN platform will soon offer affiliates a fully embeddable player capable of showcasing content on third party sites. The AP is also planning to launch new video platform by the end of the year.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

AOL’s Platform-A introduced a new ad exchange dubbed BidPlace scheduled to launch during the first half of 2009. Like Yahoo’s Right Media or Google’s AdSense, BidPlace will allow advertisers place bids for CPM, CPC and CPA ads across the AOL family of sites as well as Platform-A’s third party network, which covers 90% of the U.S. online audience according to comScore. The technology is based on AdLearn, which AOL acquired when it purchased Advertising.com for $435 million in 2004.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Among local media sites, those run by newspapers generate the highest ad revenues – an estimated $3.7 billion in ’08 – but local radio and TV sites are growing at twice the rate, according to a new website valuation report by Borrell Associates. The trend is due to newspaper sites’ reliance on display and classified ad categories, which face declining spending compared to higher CPM categories such as paid search and audio/video ad formats. The Borrell report concludes that while newspaper sites are better developed, local TV sites are positioned for rapid growth.

Now we know why AT&T has been pushing their volume text messaging plans. As of Q2 2008, the typical subscriber sent or received 357 text messages, compared to 204 phone calls, according to Nielsen findings. While the average number of calls has remained relatively stable, the average number of text messages sent or received has increased 450% since Q1 2006. U.S. teens (ages 13 to 17) had the highest levels of text messaging in Q2 2008, sending and receiving an average of 1,742 messages per month.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Air America Media
has named Beau Friedlander its Web site Editor-in-Chief.  In his new role, Beau will build and oversee editorial content, recruit guest bloggers and work with Air America’s on-air talent and producers to post timely text, audio and video content.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The battle for supremacy among online video portals are fought not only over the size of your library but also over the quality of your user interface. NBCU/Fox joint venture Hulu took a sizeable step forward in improving their rank yesterday by adding thematic channels, enhanced search functionality, better queue management and a cool new show recommendation feature. (If you liked the show you just watched, then you may want to check out this.) With over 900 film and TV titles from 100+ different content providers, the challenge for Hulu is really becoming how to insure that good programming doesn’t get buried in the tonnage. “We have a voraciously insatiable appetite for content but so much goes unwatched,” says Andy Forssell, SVP/Content Acquisition and Distribution for Hulu. As ad models and revenue splits increasingly become standardized, the company also understands that it will be the sophistication of tools like recommendation algorithms that will help to attract the best and brightest content. “(Content providers) are interested in how we can make connections with audiences,” he notes.
