ABC’s New Series:

  • The Benefactor
  • is Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s search for someone he can give $1 million dollars.  He struts down the street handing out $20’s and gives a little girl a large bill for a $.25 lollipop, getting pretty much the same reaction from all of them, dumbfounded wow.  Eventually there will be 16 all trying to be the recipients, without knowing what it is he’s looking for (apparently, he’s not so sure either). 12 Yard Prods/29 29 Prods.

  • Rodney
  • is a sitcom starring Rodney Carrington, stand up comic as a down home kinda guy raising a family with his wife.  This one didn’t set the room of buyers on fire, but sitcoms are tough since they first have to spell out the premise and the characters. Touchstone Television

  • Lost
  • begins with a plane crash, and a bunch of people deserted on an island.  That they are a bunch of people deserted on an island is pretty much where its resemblance to Survivor begins and ends. It then turns a little sci-fi, at least it seems so.  There is something in the forest, something that is big enough to eat the plane’s pilot, and apparently its still hungry.

  • Wife Swap
  • – now this one is a winner.  Bad title, funny funny show. Take two women – in this case one from New Jersey and the other from California.  Completely different in every way imaginable.  Put them in each other’s home as the ‘mom/wife’ for two weeks.  THe first week, they follow the rules of the family.  THe second week the family follows their rules. In he bit we saw at the upfront, one is obsessively clean (as is her family), the other definitely isn’t; one is  a meat and potatoes cookin’ mom; the other is a vegetarian meditator.  All the reactions you’d expect to see from the kids – and then some- you get.  Very funny. RDF Media, Diplomatic.

  • Life as We Know It
  • is a coming of age drama about boys and what boys think about most – girls and s#x.  Three teenager friends can’t understand how they should be expected to do anything else in school (except what their doing) when there are so many girls around to distract them. Touchstone Television.

  • Savages
  • is a grinning sitcom.  Take one dad, and five boys from around age 9 or so, up to driving age and beyond.  They are all pigs living in a pig sty, without feeling the need really to change that environment. Until they hear a girl is coming over.  Even then, their cleaning skills are a little rusty and perhaps dangerous, but good grins.  Icon Prods/Nothing Can Go Wrong Prods/NBC Universal Television.

  • Desperate Housewives
  • is about the women living in a cul-de-sac, all with picture perfect homes and seemingly picture perfect lives. Then one day one of the wives kills herself.  Not so perfect, apparently. The rest try to break out of their cookie cutter perfect lives so they don’t end up the same way – as one husband saw it, “I’m living in a laundry detergent commercial.” Touchstone Television.

  • The Practice: Fleet Street
  • fills that David E. Kelley void on Sunday nights. This time, the setting is an upscale law firm, often bizarre ( a la Kelley), usually darkly humorous, touching on all sorts of topics the less intrepid would steer clear of. David E. Kelley Prods/20th Century Fox Television.

Midseason Series:

  • Blind Justice kicks in after NYPD Blue concludes its 12th and final season with all new episodes, no repeats.  Look for Blind Justice to kick off in January. Steven Bochco Prods/Paramount Television
  • Eyes is high tech, is detective-ing, is clever and perhaps risky, starring Tim Daly with a sly bit of humor. McNamara Paper Products/Warner Bros. Television.
  • Grey’s Anatomy moves in when Monday Night Football season ends, airing at 10p following an 8p movie.  Medical drama – premise is a group of medical students looking for the one surgical residency spot in a teaching hospital.  Touchstone Television.

Chris Cuomo, Cynthia McFadden and John Quiñones were named as Co-Anchors with Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson for ABC News’ Primetime starting in September.  The show will return to its previous name as Primetime Live with live broadcast from NYC and other national and international locations.  And as expected Elizabeth Vargas will step in when Barbara Walters steps away from the 20/20 anchor desk. And Martin Bashir was named as a Correspondent for 20/20 starting in September 2004.

Jimmy Kimmel’s best line of the upfront:  NBC is like the rich kid who just got a BMW; CBS is the smart kid who’s going to Stanford; Fox is the jock, not so bright but good looking and gets the chicks, and ABC are the fat kids who eat paste.

WB confirmed fall schedule:
Monday:
8p 7th Heaven
9p Everwood
Tuesday:
8p Gilmore Girls
9p One Tree Hill
Wednesday:
8p Smallville
9p Blue Collar TV
930p Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show
Thursday:
8p The Mountain
9p Studio 7
Friday:
8p What I Like About You
9p Commando Nanny
930p Reba
930p Grounded for Life
Sunday:
5p One Tree Hill [r]
6p The Mountain [r]
7p  Steve Harvey’s Big Time
8p Charmed
9p Jack & Bobby

WB’s New Series:

  • Blue Collar TV
  • comes on Wednesday night, the night WB has designated for boys. Boys of all ages.  And with this show, starring Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy, you can expect fart jokes, bathroom jokes and all the other stuff boys like.  Riverside Prods/Warner Bros. Television, Bahr/Small Prods.

  • Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show
  • uses one of the most popular setup from Whose Line, putting the improv comics in front of the green screen, and turns it into a full 30m series. Here’s the differences – the group of players is bigger and once the improv has been shot, a group of animators go in and fill in all the stuff in and around the sketch, bringing all the nutty stuff in these guy’s heads to life.  For those who liked the comedy of Whose Line, this will be a winner. ProductionGroup, ACME Filmworks.

  • The Mountain
  • has all the elements of a WB angst drama (this is the WB, there’s always angst)  — good looking, nay stunning, people, magnificent backdrop, difficult family dynamics, tension. But alas, very little drama.  Nonetheless, for the younger demo this may work – it’s biggest obstacle will be its time period.

  • Studio 7
  • is a reality show from Michael Davies (Who Wants to be a Millionaire).  This show takes a piece of Real World (teenagers living together in a cool place in NYC for one week), and the gaming aspect of Millionaire with question after question.  At the end of the day, only one can win $777,000.

  • Commando Nanny
  • is Gerald McRaney at his best Major Dad once again, and this time the object of his turmoil is the new nanny – essentially he’s Mark Burnett.  At least, he’s Mark Burnett’s story played by Philip Winchester who can clearly hold his own in battle either with McRaney’s tycoon/patriarch role, as well as with his four kids. Warner Bros. Television.

  • Steve Harvey’s Big Time
  • moves to Sunday and is expanded by 30m, making it a full one hour series.  With the extra time, the show also reinvented itself.  As Steve Harvey points out – think Ed Sullivan.  Harvey will do an opening monologue, the show will be chock full of a bounty of guests as well as musical guests.  Steve – Ed … Ed – Steve.  He may just be able to pull this off.  Telepictures.

  • Jack & Bobby
  • This one was my personal favorite and the one I believe could be the network’s next big score.  With Christine Lahti leading the cast, she drives an energy into each scene that makes it at once compelling. The format is intriguing with current day (2050 or thereabouts) people/politicians, talking about Jack’s Presidency and Bobby’s work to support the President, with ongoing looks back to help identify how each boy developed into the man each came to be. Warner Bros. Television/Berlanti Liddel Prods/Shoe Money Prods.

Midseason Series:

  • Big Man on Campus – group of girls whittle a group of guys down the one they like best; then he turns the table and whittles them down to the one he likes best. Next Entertainment Studios/Telepictures
  • Global Frequency – is a drama set in a global intelligence agency created to prevent international politics from undermining the security of the global community. Also from Mark Burnett.  Warner Bros. Television, Cloudbreak Entertainment.
  • Rocky Point, set in Hawaii is another coming of age drama. Stars Billy Campbell.  Warner Bros. Television
  • Shaking Up,a comedy with Fran Drescher who is shaking up with a 23 year old guy, and tries to explain to her 24 year old son that that’s a good thing. Regency Television.
  • Summerland is about a family torn apart when the parents are suddenly killed, leaving the three kids to live with their young, single aunt – Lori Loughlin. Spelling Prods.
  • Wannabes are wannabe actresses living together in LA, all trying to make it into the big time. Telepictures.
  • Bruce Nash Project is as yet confidential (or still being thought up?), but it will be a reality or alternative series for next season.

Telemundo’s Confirmed Fall Schedule (primetime airs 7-11p) – four primetime telenovelas
M-F Schedule Kicks off August 30:

  • 7p Anita: No Te Rajes! (Anita: Don’t Give Up!):  a beautiful, young, and energetic Mexican woman who illegally crosses the U.S.-Mexican border in search for her aunt. Her new life quest is filled with hardships and forbidden love as well as hilarious adventures sure to make the audience cheer for this very special character.
  • 8p La Mujer en el Espejo (The Woman in the Mirror): After being rejected, humiliated and set up, an unattractive woman is granted her wish of becoming beautiful with the help of a “fairy godmother.” Ana is warned that she must not seek revenge, but justice.
  • 9p Gitanas (Gypsies):  a young and stunning gypsy woman who falls in love with a “gayó” (a non-gypsy man), a forbidden love by the gypsy code.
  • 10p Te Voy a Enseñar a Querer (I Will Teach You to Love): a father and son facing off for the love of a woman.

Additional Telemundo Projects:
Telenovelas:

  • El Frijol (Little Bean): tender and beautiful story about a very special boy who steals everyone’s heart
  • Una Mexicana en Nueva York (A Mexican Woman in NY): a woman who returns to New York to reclaim her twin sons after wrongly being imprisoned
  • Volver al Paraíso (Return to Paradise): industrious Oaxacan woman, whose biggest desire is to recover the land that once belonged to her family

REALITY:

  • Nuevas Voces de America: Throughout several weeks, several aspiring stars will live together as they begin to mold their professional image alongside Emilio Estefan’s team of experts. Each week the competition sets off with a different “musical encounter” all leading to the two-hour “Grand Finale.” That is where the new voice of America will be crowned.
  • El Príncipe Azul: a Prince Charming story where it’s now the man’s turn to pick the lady of his dreams! One handsome bachelor, 20 beautiful Latinas, one big secret!
  • La Hacienda: Take 16 “city slickers” (8 men and 8 women), put them on a ranch and give them the Ultimate Challenge: to become the country’s # 1 Ranchero.

WEDNESDAY UPFRONTS SCHEDULED:  UNIVISION, CBS

The expected CBS Schedule will likely include these new series: CSI: New York, Clubhouse, Dr. Vegas, Center of the Universe, Jason Alexander project, and a mid-season project from Chuck Lorre with Jenna Elfman. Attempting to guess CBS’ primetime schedule is always an exercise in futility, so I’ll hold off until the confirmed schedule here tomorrow, with the minor exception of a couple of I-can’t-resist predictions – CSI New York steps in on Mondays at 10p; sitcoms remain on Monday 8-10p including Center of the Universe at 830p after Still Standing moves to 8p replacing Yes Dear. Yes Dear remains in the wings with 13 new eps next season, just in case.  Navy NCIS may well stay put on Tuesdays at 8pm, while a new drama drops in at 9p, perhaps Dr. Vegas. New or returning drama to land on Wednesday which may be an opportunity opposite NBC’s new Hawaii at 8p/West Wing at 9p; and ABC’s Lost at 8p and The Bachelor at 9p) CSI Miami at 10p.  Friday nights may see the Clubhouse at 9p, with JAG at 10p. Saturday is a real question mark – perhaps the home for reality, or continuing to try and building with original/repeated drama fare (Navy NCIS, Clubhouse, a CSI) along with repeats of dramas from earlier in the week.  Who knows? CBS and they’ll fill us all in this afternoon.

Tonight’s Finales:
The Bachelor at 9p on ABC
The King of Queens at 9p on CBS
That 70’s Show at 8p on FOX
The West Wing at 9p on NBC
Smallville at 8p on WB
Angel at 9p on WB – season finale

Cable network BET‘s President/COO Debra Lee came out with a statement yesterday in support of Nielsen Media Research‘s installing the use of Local People Meters in local markets. Her statement reads in part: “Nielsen already measures national ratings via the use of the people meter technology.  It makes sense to use modern methodology like LPMs to accurately measure viewership at the local level.”  She continues to say, “Quite frankly, we don’t understand why some broadcasters would oppose any method of truthfully tracking what viewers are and are not watching, regardless of their ethnic background. It’s a known fact that minority consumers – especially African Americans – are this country’s largest consumers of entertainment products.  It seems only fair that their voices be heard as advertisers decide where to spend their dollars to try and reach that audience.  Networks like BET could certainly benefit from information that depicts the true viewing patterns of African-American consumers.”

In an effort to abate at least some of the surging complaints over Fox’s tallying system for American Idol, the network says plans to expand the amount of time viewers have to vote by doubling it to four hours for the finale on May 25. While this answers perhaps some of the questions raised in recent weeks, Fox says this expanded voting time has always been its plan.  One of the complaints about the voting system raised recently is the possibility of so-called power dialers (hitting the redial button to vote several, even hundreds of times to skew to the voting process) can be weeded out by the independent company who manages the voting system.  Fox says the company can easily identified and discount the power dialers numerous calls.  And yet, Producers know whatever happens at the finale, no matter how fair or unfair the voting process seems to be, “the system only reports the decision of the voting public.”

Martha Stewart Living Television distributed by King World,  will go on hiatus following this 11th season’s wrap in September.  Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia said the effect of their decision will be 40 staffers will lose their jobs.  Stewart issued a statement that looked hopeful down the road, saying she would like to ‘resume our close collaboration just as soon as I am able to do so.” Stewart faces sentencing on June 17.  MSLO other series, including Marc Marrone’s Petkeeping and Everyday Food, will continue.

The next time you can’t sleep, and turn on the TV at 3am, watching paid programming and considering making a purchase, the Federal Trade Commissions recommends you stay away from the Balance Bracelet. In fact, the FTC has formally filed court papers on the topic, saying that Media Maverick Inc. is making false claims that this nearly $80 bracelet can relieve pain. The FTC is asking the count to stop Media Maverick from making such claims and to pay restitution.

ShootingStar Broadcasting and Alta Communications of Boston have obtained the assets of locally owned Channel 50, WNDS/Boston. The new company, ShootingStar Broadcasting of New England, LLC, acquired the station from CTV of Derry, Inc..  The station serves approximately 2 million cable and satellite households in addition to over-the-air viewers.
