ABC: Better Off Ted at 830p


Mythbusters, the experimentation series uncovering the truth about myths and legends will be back on Discovery Channel for a seventh season April 8 at 9p with a two-hour Demolition Derby Special. Over the season, ten new episodes feature hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage along with build team members Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara as they put scientific tests, curiosity and resourcefulness into every experiment. The series is produced by Beyond Productions for Discovery Channel.

Discovery Channel explores the complex drawings of legendary artist Leonardo daVinci in the new series, Doing daVinci beginning April 13 at 10p. The six-part hi-def series takes drawings of weapons daVinci did nearly 500 years ago and constructs them perhaps for the first time using a team of 21st century builders, engineers and historians. In one episode, the team constructs an armored tank and in another a three-story siege ladder to see if daVinci’s designs are realistic or should have stayed in conceptual form. Pilgrim Films and Television produces the series for Discovery Channel.

Documentary Channel (DOC) is reserving Sunday nights for IMAX Originals programming starting April 12 as the first three films included in the 21-film package will make their television premiere. To honor aerospace history and the significant date of April 12 (man’s first trip to outer space on April 12, 1961 and first space shuttle launch on April 12, 1981), DOC has scheduled Hail Columbia! to air at 8p; Space Station at 845p; and Destiny in Space at 10p. Last year, DOC was the first television network to acquire the exclusive US television rights to the IMAX XXI Film Package, all transferred to hi-def, in a multi-year deal with Northstar Media. Other space-related IMAX titles will air in April as The Dream Is Alive is slated for April 19 at 8p and Mission to Mir on April 26 at 8p.

Discovery Communications, Inc. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against, Inc. in the US District Court for the District of Delaware. The suit alleges infringement of a patent issued to Discovery Communications involving electronic book technology and directly names Amazon’s sale of the Kindle and Kindle 2 products and its electronic book delivery system.

Upfront Update: Spanish-language television network Univision will forego the large New York upfront presentation in May, opting instead to announce its programming lineup for the 2009-2010 season with meetings involving small groups of advertisers and agencies in various cities, reports Adweek. Throughout next month, these small gatherings will be closed to the media and will happen in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas and New York.

American Idol contestants from Carrie Underwood to Danny Gokey will soon have their faces on trading cards through a new deal with the FOX show’s production company FremantleMedia and trading card publisher Upper Deck, according to the AP. Six special cards autographed by past winners will be randomly placed into the five-card packs.

VH1’s new series VH1 Tough Love attracted 2.0 million total viewers last Sunday night at 10p, holding 85% of lead-in show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels.

Also on Sunday night at 10p, Comedy Central aired its Comedy Central Roast Of Larry The Cable Guy which ranked #1 among A18-49 (see Top 10 Cable Programs ranker) and captured an average of 4.1 million viewers. This is the network’s third most-watched Roast ever behind Jeff Foxworthy’s at 6.2 million and Pamela Anderson’s at 4.3 million.

Aussie actor Alex O’Loughlin will be seen on CBS as the former Moonlight star is negotiating to star in the medical drama pilot Three Rivers, per THR. The project from CBS Paramount is about organ transplants seen from the triple perspective of the doctors, the donors and the recipients. O’Loughlin’s character is Dr. Andy Yablonski, the workaholic head of the organ transplant team who is separated from his wife and lives at a motel near the hospital.

The beta release, now available to registered developers, will deliver 100 new features, including cut, copy and paste (finally!); MMS; landscape view for Mail, Text and Notes; stereo Bluetooth; Notes syncing; shake to shuffle; parental controls for TV shows, movies and App Store apps; a new Voice Memo app and automatic login at Wi-Fi hot spots. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Marvel Entertainment enters into a deal with startup Gazillion Entertainment to develop and publish massively multiplayer games (MMO) for a range of ages based on the Marvel’s universe of characters, and elements from its animated series and movies.  The first game in the development under the deal is a casual MMO for kids based on Marvel’s Super Hero Squad property, which features a stylized look for super heroes including Iron Man, Hulk, Wolverine, Thor, fantastic Four, Captain America among others.  The Super Hero Squad MMO is based on the super Hero Squad toy line and the upcoming animated series (26×30) of the same name that will air on Cartoon Network.  In addition, Gazillion will develop and publish Marvel Universe, an MMO for PC and consoles.    Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Saturday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX was rock solid Saturday night at 1.8/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. The average of two Cops episodes took FOX to #1 at 8p with 1.9/7 while the last of CBS’ NCAA PAC-10 Championship and Crimetime Saturday averaged a second place with 1.0/4.  FOX continued to stand out during 9p as AMW: America Fights Back delivered a 1.8/6, ahead of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars rerun and CBS’ Crimetime Saturday repeat tying for second at 1.3/4. At 10p, CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery did best with 1.4/5 ahead of NBC’s Law & Order encore at 1.2/4.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: ABC made the most of Sunday night succeeding with 3.5/9 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. At 7p, CBS’ 60 Minutes won the hour with 2.2/7 just a tenth of a rating point in front of ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos at 2.1/7. A similar scenario prevailed at 8p as CBS’ Amazing Race tipped in the winning rating at 3.1/8, a smidge ahead of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 3.0/8, followed then by FOX’s sitcoms The Simpsons/King of the Hill at 2.7/7 and NBC’s series premiere of Kings at 1.6/4. ABC was the decisive winner at 9p with Desperate Housewives and a 5.1/12 while the FOX comedies Family Guy/American Dad averaged a second place 3.3/8 with CBS’ Cold Case in third at 2.9/7 and NBC’s new Kings remaining in fourth at 1.7/4.
