Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Microsoft and Sony are facing off against each other at E3 this week to see which company can provide the most flexible and compelling platform for games, movies and TV shows. Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform has:
- enhanced its social capabilities, adding Facebook and Twitter integrations to the Live dashboard and introducing Last.fm music feeds. A new app will enable users to host Live movie viewing parties where you and your friends’ avatars can sit and watch a flick
- announced that the Netflix-integrated Xbox Video Marketplace will be re-branded as the Zune Video Marketplace, with PPV and sell-through instant availability, soon viewable also on a new Zune HD portable in 1080p resolution with 5.1 sound
- provided details on Project Natal, the platform’s new Wii-like technology that will take voice commands and track body movement in three dimensions on the screen
Sony officially unveiled the download-only PSP Go, a slightly smaller, lighter version of the portable media device that will be able to access titles you purchase or rent from the PlayStation Store. Sony Computer Entertainment also announced a new deal with Starz Digital Media to offer movies and anime titles on the Sony PlayStation Network from Overture Films, Anchor Bay Entertainment and Manga Entertainment, for rent or purchase in standard or high-def. (Sony also licenses titles from Universal Studios and NBC.) However plans to launch a music store for the PSP Go are kaput for now, according to paidcontent.
VOD windowing continues to improve. Comcast has gotten Warner Bros. and Lionsgate to agree to release HD movies on demand the same day they are released on DVD this month with Disney and Summit to follow in July. The viewing window on the movies have also been extended from 24 to 48 hours. Comcast says it saw its biggest On Demand movie opening ever with day-in-date release of the teen-obsessed vampire flick Twilight.
Meanwhile Comcast CEO Brian Roberts joined the chorus of cable executives supporting the walled garden or “TV Everywhere” authentication concept proposed by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, per Mediapost. Comcast’s preferred name for limiting online cable content to cable subscribers is “OnDemand Online.”
NBC Universal Digital Studio announced its latest project, the webisode series “CTRL,” based on the Sundance award-winning short CTRL Z from Canadian filmmaker Rob Kirbyson, to be distributed on VOD, NBC.com, Hulu, USANetwork.com and other platforms later this summer. Sponsor Nestea has been integrated deeply into the story as the protagonist Stuart (Tony Hale) gains superpowers after taking in the “liquid awesomeness” of the drink.
MTV Networks’ Logo is providing editorial content for the newly enhanced LGBT-focused section of the Amazon Movies & TV store. The section will host video clips form Logo originals and will feature a Pride Month sale event, with DVDs up to 60% off for the month of June.
Rescue Me star and co-creator (and Hulu pitchman) Dennis Leary will host a live chat with his partner Peter Tolan today on Fancast.com at 3 pm.
Call for Content: DIY Network is teaming up with MLB Network offering to put together a baseball themed “man cave” to the guy who wants to it the most. Upload a video from June 12 to July 24 explaining what you will do in your cave to DIYnetwork.com and DIY will feature the winning renovation project on a special edition of Man Caves on Sept. 29.
Video syndicator Grab Networks (formerly Voxant and Anystream) got a hold of $12 million in debt and equity funding from existing investors Softbank Capital, SCP Capital, Longworth Venture Partners, and Court Square Partners. Horizon Technology Finance also joined as an investor, leading the equity debt portion of the round. The company plans to use the funding to advance its hosting services and video indexing technologies.
CBS News will team with live video streaming platform Ustream to offer live simulcasts of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric on the site, along with breaking news content and unedited news conferences and speeches. CBS.com also announced it is adding a Spanish SAP feed to its full episode streams of Bold and the Beautiful.
Ottawa-based e-commerce application provider Shopify announced the official launch of the Shopify API Platform and the Shopify App Store. Developers can now create and sell custom applications for the Shopify App Store, currently used by more than 5,000 merchants.
Pre-roll ads have been the focus for online video thus far but the medium offers so much more to offer. Tremor Media unveiled a new set of online video ad placements for its Acudeo video monetization platform designed to present the viewer with options to view additional video content such as multiple TV ads, product reviews, tutorials, or long form branded content. Ambitious “storytelling” units allow advertisers to present campaign content in chapter format with alternative paths and endings, navigated by the user. “vChoice” units have been tested by some of Tremor’s major clients including P&G, Universal Pictures and Microsoft and are now available on Tremor’s 900+ partner sites.
First YouTube, then blogging platforms WordPress and Blogspot, now Twitter has been blocked in China – just two days before the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. However word has it that API-based Twitter application such as Seesmic Desktop are still functional.
IMAX announced plans to file for an IPO, pricing 9.8 million shares at $7.15 each to raise approximately $70 million.
Sorenson Media announced that the Sorenson Spark licensing program has expanded to power distribution of video on multiple platforms including mobile phones and other consumer electronic devices. Ittiam and NXP Semiconductors are among the latest companies to license Sorenson’s codec, joining Qualcomm, Verizon, Sony and YouTube.
Inergize Digital introduced Google mapping technology for its CMS clients. They system enables maps to be added to online content, providing an interactive, location-based visual element to news, weather, sports and event stories.
Time spent on Facebook has gone through the roof in the past year – up 700% y/y – but MySpace is still leading in term of video viewing, according to a new Nielsen report. MySpace was the top social networking destination when ranked by streams and total minutes spent viewing video as MySpacers spent 384 million minutes viewing video with an average of 38.8 minutes/viewer. By comparison, Facebook visitors spent only 113.5 million minutes viewing video in April, with an average of 11.2 minutes/viewer.

Hulu’s new desktop app is great but it’s tethered to your PC, where you have a full keyboard at your disposal. YouTube has just launched XL, a new browser-based, AJAX-powered interface designed for lean-back, last 10-feet viewing. (In other words, it’s only useful if you’ve already figured out how to connect your television to the internet. The service will access most, but not all of YouTube’s content. (Not all premium content holders have signed off.) Not unlike the YouTube interface for the Apple TV console, XL provides a run down of basic categories (Spotlight, Top Rated, Most Viewed,) ranking them by views. Your own channels, saved videos, favorites and playsits will pop up under your account. The real value here could be its search bar, displayed prominently in the upper right hand corner.
