Cynopsis: Sports
07/18/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR and INDYCAR Series are teaming up to press Congress to table an amendment restricting the military branches from utilizing sports sponsorships as a marketing and recruitment tool. The leagues sent a letter to Rep. John Boehner asking the Speaker to show “continued opposition” to the Kingston-McCollum amendment in the $608 billion 2013 Dept. of Defense appropriations bill that blocks the military from using funds for sponsorships in professional or semi-pro sports. The letter claims that in 2010 alone, Army sponsorship in NASCAR led to 46,000 qualified leads.

On the Air

Turner Sports wrapped up its coverage of the NASCAR Summer Series with an average of 3.1 in households for an increase of 3% in year-to-year averages for the six-race schedule. Viewership, meanwhile, pulled in an average of 5.1 million total viewers to hold even for the year. For the network’s six week run, TNT’s NASCAR coverage delivered the highest-rated and most-viewed program of the day on ad-supported cable.

NCAA president Mark Emmert told Tavis Smiley in a PBS interview that while the NCAA is still sorting through all of the info from the Penn State scandal, he would be willing to deal the university with the infamous “death penalty” if the organization can prove there were football-related violations. In the interview, Emmert admitted that he had “never seen anything as egregious as this in terms of just overall conduct and behavior inside a university and hope to never see it again.” (By the way, whatever happened to the investigation of the Miami scandal?) Anyway, Penn State said Tuesday it will reply to Emmert and the NCAA’s request for info within days.

A two-partNo Huddle: Favre & Sanders is set to air tonight and tomorrow at 8p on NFL Network. The program will feature the former Hall of Fame cornerback and current NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders engaging in an in-depth conversation with Brett Favre, where they will discuss the quarterback’s career and relationships.

FOX and the UFC are extending their relationship even further into international waters. The UFC locked in a new two-year broadcast agreement in Australia with pay-television company Foxtel, Premier Media Group-owned Fox Sports Australia, Fox International’s Fuel TV and pay-per-view television channel Main Event. In the new agreement, the MMA promotion look to FUEL TV as the main hub for UFC content, while Fox Sports will for the first time screen live UFC fights.

Sirius XM Radio added DIRECTV’s The Nick & Artie Show to its sports talk lineup, according to the Radio & Television Business Report. The program can be heard on Sirius channel 94 and XM channel 208 starting Thursday at 10p.

Martial arts network Blackbelt TV has inked a new distribution pact with CANALSAT, which serves 52 countries and territories. Through the deal, the channel will begin a phased roll-out on the platforms beginning Sept. 18 in France.

Sponsorship & Promotion

NASCAR reports that more Fortune 500 companies are now involved in NASCAR than four years ago in a review of brands currently using the sport for promotion. The analysis looked at companies that either sponsor NASCAR teams, tracks, the sanctioning body, or are media partners and showed that the total number of companies invested in NASCAR (with 114) remains higher than any other sport.

Little Caesars inked a deal to continue sponsoring the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl through 2013, according to the Detroit Free Press. This year’s game will be played Dec. 26 at Ford Field in Detroit. The pizza chain has sponsored the post-season game since 2009.
