Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Lionsgate expands its relationship with American Greetings Properties (AGP) with the acquisition of the exclusive North American home entertainment distribution rights to a range of Care Bears titles, including the new TV series, Care Bears: Adventures In Care A-Lot (48 episodes), a new CGI animated movie (fall 2009), as well as extending its rights to the classic catalog.  Lionsgate also picks up the home entertainment distribution rights to the CBS series based on AGP’s Sushi Pack.  Under the deal, the studio has the rights to distribute the titles on DVD and electronic sell-through.

British comic actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been cast as the bumbling detectives Thompson Twins (aka Dupont and Dupont if your are in France) in the upcoming Tintin movies from Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, per Aint It Cool News.  The movies are being co-financed by Sony and Paramount.  Pegg and Frost have worked together on other movies including Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, as well as on TV in the UK.  No word as of yet who will play Tintin.  Thomas Sangster (Love, Actually) had been set to play the lead, but dropped out when the production dates shifted when Universal stepped out of the ring.  Andy Serkis is still in to play Captain Haddock.  Production begins in a month.

Breakthrough Films & Television has begun production on two new projects including Stay Tooned (13×30).  A live action fact-based series about the world of TV’s Saturday morning cartoons of the past, Stay Tooned will feature cartoon clips and behind the scenes footage as well as a mix of interview with cartoon experts, celebrities and fans.  While not specifically for kids, Stay Tooned will likely draw a family audience as well as ardent animation fans.  Stay Tooned is produced by Breakthrough Films & Television in association with creator/producer, Dale Burshtein and Canwest.  The series will air on TVtropolis.

The Powerpuff Girls celebrate their 10th anniversary with a new 30-minute special, The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!! (the first new episode since 2004), which premieres on Cartoon Network, Monday, January 19, at 8p.  Leading up to the new episode, the network hosts a 14-hour marathon (January 19, 6a-8p) featuring Powerpuff Girls series creator Craig McCracken’s favorite episodes.  Warner Home Video gets in on the merriment on January 20 with the release of The Complete Powerpuff Girls Anniversary Collector’s Set, a six-DVD boxed-set including every Powerpuff Girls episode and special goes on sale.

Scholastic Kids Press Corps adds 29 new kid reporters (ages 10-14), who will cover all the major kid, news, entertainment and other events in the coming year, including the upcoming US Presidential Inauguration.  Their work, along with the returning 22 other kid reporters, will be featured in articles published by Scholastic News online and in magazines Scholastic News (grades 1-6) and Junior Scholastic (grades 6-8).

With a new actor set to take on the roll of Doctor Who, BBC Worldwide says the property will be one of its a licensing priorities through 2009, series 5 featuring the new Doctor, Matt Smith, in 2010 and on.  With that, BBC Worldwide has renewed and extended the Doctor Who master toy license with Character Options, which has held the license since 2005.  BBC Worldwide is developing new style elements for licensees for series 5 with product expected to be available at retail in summer 2010.  Meanwhile this year will see the release of a range of items, including the launch of Time Squad collectible figures in spring, followed by repackaged and revamped Cyberman Age of Steel products to tie-in with the holiday 2009 special.

Chapman Entertainment‘s Roary the Racing Car will have its own special play area at the Autosport International Show in the UK this weekend, January 10-11, at the Birmingham NEC.  For those bringing the kids along the Roary area will feature a small racetrack, pedal cars and an explanation of what different racing flags mean, as well as a photo op with Roary and Big Chris.
