Cynopsis: Kids!
01/07/09
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Lionsgate expands its relationship with American Greetings Properties (AGP) with the acquisition of the exclusive North American home entertainment distribution rights to a range of Care Bears titles, including the new TV series, Care Bears: Adventures In Care A-Lot (48 episodes), a new CGI animated movie (fall 2009), as well as extending its rights to the classic catalog. Lionsgate also picks up the home entertainment distribution rights to the CBS series based on AGP’s Sushi Pack. Under the deal, the studio has the rights to distribute the titles on DVD and electronic sell-through.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
British comic actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been cast as the bumbling detectives Thompson Twins (aka Dupont and Dupont if your are in France) in the upcoming Tintin movies from Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg, per Aint It Cool News. The movies are being co-financed by Sony and Paramount. Pegg and Frost have worked together on other movies including Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, as well as on TV in the UK. No word as of yet who will play Tintin. Thomas Sangster (Love, Actually) had been set to play the lead, but dropped out when the production dates shifted when Universal stepped out of the ring. Andy Serkis is still in to play Captain Haddock. Production begins in a month.
Breakthrough Films & Television has begun production on two new projects including Stay Tooned (13×30). A live action fact-based series about the world of TV’s Saturday morning cartoons of the past, Stay Tooned will feature cartoon clips and behind the scenes footage as well as a mix of interview with cartoon experts, celebrities and fans. While not specifically for kids, Stay Tooned will likely draw a family audience as well as ardent animation fans. Stay Tooned is produced by Breakthrough Films & Television in association with creator/producer, Dale Burshtein and Canwest. The series will air on TVtropolis.
