Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 28, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
MarVista Entertainment unveils its new tween reality competition series, In the Real World (13×60), this week at NATPE. MarVista holds exclusive worldwide program and format sales rights for the series, which is produced by Apartment 11 Productions. In the Real World features 18 contestants from ages 12-14 as they race across North America and complete a series of real world challenges. In the Real World is set to premiere on YTV (Canada) on February 4 at 7p.
Brendan Fraser will star in Summit Entertainment‘s new live-action family comedy movie Furry Vengeance, per Variety. Directed by Roger Kumble (College Road Trip), Furry Vengeance follows a real estate developer and his battle with some angry wildlife creatures when his new development moves into their domain.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon Latin America announced its new slate of original programming at NATPE. The line-up will include new series The Mighty B!, The Penguins of Madagascar, Speed Racer, Jimmy Two Shoes, Back at the Barnyard, True Jackson VP, and The Elephant Princess on Nickelodeon, in addition to Ni Hao, Kai-Lan and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom for Nick Jr. Latin America. Returning series include iCarly, Naked Brothers Band and ISA TKM and new episodes of Fairly OddParents, Tak and the Power of Juju and SpongeBob SquarePants.
HIT Entertainment inks a broadcast deal and TV distribution deals for its new CGI animated preschool property Little Charlie Bear (26×7), which is a co-production with Annix Studios. CBeebies acquires Little Charlie Bear and plans to debut the series later this year. Little Charley Bear has also been licensed to SVT (Sweden) and NRK (Norway). CBeebies has also licensed the first CGI series of Bob the Builder for broadcast in 2010.
Elsewhere, HIT Entertainment has also completed distribution deals for a range of its kid’s shows including: France 5 (France) picks up Fireman Sam and the new CGI series Angelina Ballerina for its preschool block ZousZous; The new CGI Bob the Builder is picked up by RAI (Italy) and Super RTL (Germany); Super RTL also takes the new CGI Thomas & Friends for air in 2010 on its Toggolino preschool block; NRK (Norway) licenses Clay Play, which is repped by HIT and produced by Israel’s Smartoonz.
Don Bluth Films, Inc. is set to release a digitally re-mastered two-disc special 30th anniversary edition of Banjo the Woodpile Cat, produced and animated by former Disney animators Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy. Directed by Bluth, between March 1975 and December 1979 in his garage, the re-release includes 90 minutes of bonus content such as director and producer commentary and interviews, and a segment about Bluth, Goldman and Pomeroy’s exit from Disney Productions.

Spin Master Ltd. enters into a licensing deal with Chorion to develop a range of preschool toys based on Ian Falconer’s book and now animated character Olivia. Under the deal Spin Master is granted the master toy rights worldwide, and will launch its Olivia toy line in fall 2010. Chorion’s 3D CGI animated series premieres this week on Nickelodeon US, where it will air daily.
Aardman Rights inks licensing deals for its new stop-motion animated preschool property Timmy Time (52×10). Currently in production, Timmy Time has been pre-bought by CBeebies (UK), where the series will bow this year, and Disney Channels worldwide. In the UK, Aardman enters into deals for Timmy Time with Golden Bear (wooden toys), Cooneen Textiles (nightwear and underwear), DNC UK (tableware and drinkware), Character World (bedding), RJ Jarret (kid’s footwear), Roy Lowe & Sons (kid’s socks), William Lamb (kid’s slippers and wellingtons) and Danillo (cards and calendars). International agents for the property include Super RTL (Germany), Kidz Entertainment (Scandinavia and Eastern Europe), Haven Licensing (Australia) and TF1 (France).
BBC Worldwide signs two new UK toy licensees for the preschool property 3rd & Bird! with DanJam (wooden toys) and MV Sports (wheeled toys). The new products are set to launch in 2010. In December, Fisher-Price was named master toy licensee for 3rd & Bird!, with its product slated to bow first in the UK in spring/summer 2010. BBC Worldwide holds the global distribution rights including program distribution, DVD and merchandising for 3rd & Bird!, which is produced by Little Airplane Productions (The Wonder Pets).
D3Publisher releases the Coraline videogame ( www.coralinethegame.com ) nationwide for Wii, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2. Based on LAIKA‘s new stop-motion/3D animated movie Coraline, the Coraline videogame allows players to take on the role of the adventurous Coraline and interact with the characters from the movie. Like the movie, the Coraline game features the voices of Dakota Fanning (Coraline Jones), Keith David (Cat), and Robert Bailey Jr. (Wybie Lovat). Directed by Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas), Focus Features releases the Coraline movie domestically on February 6, 2009, in both 3D and traditional movie theaters. The movie is based on author Neil Gaiman‘s book Coraline. The Coraline videogame for Wii and the PlayStation 2 was developed by Papaya Studios and is rated E 10+ (Everyone 10 and up), with Coraline for Nintendo DS developed by Art Co. Ltd., which is rated E (Everyone)
Miss Sixty, the Italian apparel company, partners with King Features Syndicate to create a limited edition Miss Sixty Olive Oyl collection featuring the classic cartoon character. Launching worldwide in February 2009, which marks Miss Sixty’s first licensed cartoon character apparel category, the collection includes three ’80-inspired cotton t-shirts with images of Olive Oyl.

The American Library Association (ALA) announced the top books, video and audiobooks for kids and young adults, including the Caldecott, King, Newbery and Printz and many other noted awards this week at its annual midwinter meeting in Denver. Additionally, this year the ALA celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards and introduced a new award, the William C. Morris Award. It is also the first year that the Pura Belpre Award, which will be given annually. Medal winners and honorees are selected by judging committees of librarians and other kid’s literature experts. RATINGS
Nicktoons Network‘s launch of the new animated series Wolverine and X-Men, with back-to-back episodes on January 23 at 8p and 8:30p, earned the network its highest rated original series premiere ever among K6-11 and Boys 6-11. The hour-long debut, earned an average K6-11 123,000 and Boys 6-11 91,000. Tween 9-14 and Tween Boys also tuned into to watch with the first episode (8p) drawing 70,000 Tweens 9-14, that included 60,000 Boy Tweens 9-14. For the second episode an average of Tweens 9-14 134,000, and 9-14 Boys delivered 89,000. The breakdown of the two episodes with K6-11 and Boys 6-11 saw big increases over the same time last year:
- The first episode at 8p averaged K6-11 92,000 and Boys 6-11 72,000, up by +133% and +175% respectively.
- Followed by the 8:30p episode with an average of K6-11 154,000 and Boys 6-11 110,000, an increase of +200% and +183% respectively.
