Endemol acquires the Southern Star Group, Australian TV producer/distributor, from Fairfax Media in a deal valued at US$49.7 million, per The Hollywood Reporter.  The deal will see Fairfax retain control of Southern Star Factual, as well as its 75% stake in UK-based kid and interactive producer Darrall Macqueen.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBBC‘s long-running series Blue Peter will mark Holocaust Memorial Day January 27, 2009, by following host Joel Defries as he explores his family’s history and meets and travels with Holocaust survivor Freda Wineman as she travels back to Auschwitz in Poland for the first time in 60+ years.  The episode, Blue Peter: Joel’s Journey, will also feature Defries visiting with a Jewish family in Britain where he celebrates the Sabbath, and he also attends a Bat Mitzvah among other things.  Blue Peter: Joel’s Journey airs on CBBC on BBC One at 4.35p on Tuesday 27 January 2009 and is repeated the following morning on the CBBC channel at 8.30a.

In other BBC kid news:

• CBeebies will premiere its new mixed live-action and animated series Tellytales (15-parts) this March 2009.  In each episode of the series, a myth, legend or tale from around the world is featured and presented with the help of real kids telling and acting them out in music, song, storytelling and creating artwork for the show too.  Stories in the series include: Jack And The Beanstalk, Dancing Rose (Egypt), The Magic Porridge Pot (Russia), The Sword In The Stone (Wales); King Midas (Greece); Snake Charmer (India); Muri On The Moon (Kenya); The “Bunyip” Baby (Australia)
• CBeebies names Alex Winters (32) and Cerrie Burnell (29) as the new hosts of its Discovery And Do and The Bedtime Hour.  Winters and Burnell make their official debut on the network on Monday, January 26, 2009 on Discovery And Do at 9a, as well as online in a parent-directed introduction (

www.bbc.coc.uk/cbeebies/grownups ). The two over the for Chris Jarvis and Pui Fan Lee who are currently developing a new CBeebies show, Show Me Show Me, which premieres later this year.  Winters and Burnell join Sid Sloan and Andy Day, who also serve as hosts on the preschool channel.

Jetix UK has acquired both seasons of BKN’s animated series Dork Hunters From Outer Space.  Season one of the kid/tween comedy series debuted in the UK last year on GMTV’s Toonattik, where it will continue to run and is being currently repeated on Action Stations! Dork Hunters season one will debut on Jetix in Spring 2009, followed by season two in late 2009 after the UK premier of second season on GMTV’s Toonattik.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) signs an exclusive licensing pact with Walt Disney Television International (Southeast Asia) for the CGI animated series Twisted Whiskers.  Under the deal, Twisted Whiskers will broadcast from later this year on Disney Channel‘s in 12 markets Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Palau, Thailand, Vietnam Cambodia, South Korea, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea.  You may recall in December 2008, DQE completed a deal with Disney International India for Twisted Whiskers and two other animated series, Ratman and Sandra.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Contender Entertainment Group is appointed as the UK licensor for Summit Entertainment‘s feature film Twilight.  Contender also holds the UK rights to the Twilight movie sequel, New Moon, which releases in the US November 20, 2009, with a UK release date TBA.  Based on the first book in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series, Twilight opened in the UK on December 19, 2008, following its release in the US on November 21, 2008.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) taps Now and Zen Productions as the apparel partner for the Cartoon Network animated series Chowder and Flapjack.   In these first licensing deals for each brand, product (including t-shirts and fleece tops for juniors and young men) is slated to bow at specialty retailers nationwide in spring 2009.

Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) is appointed to manage licensing and merchandising rights for Cookie Jar Group‘s preschool property Caillou in Portugal and Spain.  In Portugal, where Caillou is known as Ruca, the series currently airs on RTP2 and Panda, and in Spain on TVE’s La 2 and Boomerang.  In addition to a new merchandising campaign, live shows in Spain and Portugal, as well as a mall tour in Portugal, are scheduled for 2009
