Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02/25/09
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, February 25, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
In its first big movie during the reign of new boss Carol Bartz, Yahoo unveiled a trio of new advertising targeting products that incorporate some of the innovations Google has brought to the online ad marketplace. Given the slow, painful decline of Yahoo’s revenues in general and the display ad industry as a whole, a lot is riding on the advances – which seek to merge the arenas of search and display as a single solution. The new products include Search Retargeting, giving advertisers the ability to place display ads based on a users’ search activities; Enhanced Retargeting, delivering dynamically generated display ads across the Yahoo network based on user activity on an advertiser’s site; and Enhanced Targeting capabilities for search advertising, including ad scheduling and demographic targeting within search. Meanwhile in an overview with analysts Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer once again reiterated his interest in pooling search resources with Yahoo, per ZDNET.
’80s electro new wave band Depeche Mode broke new ground with an increasingly flexible Apple, convincing iTunes to offer a TV-style “Season Pass” option for the band’s upcoming “Sounds of the Universe Album.” Fans can pay $19 to receive additional content over the next few weeks including remixes, exclusive videos and the pre-released single “Wrong,” leading up to the release of the full album on April 21. The model could help companies like EMI Music, Depeche Mode‘s label, earn extra revenue from the platform while quenching the thirst of die hard fans for extra content.
Hollywood is finally beginning to turn its attention toward international online video audiences, but don’t expect the full-length floodgates to open just yet. Fox International Channels launched its first TV portal abroad in Italy, dubbed FlopTV, featuring a mixture of HD short-form Italian sitcoms and UGC, per Variety. Meanwhile CBS Interactive announced the availability of clips internationally on TV.com from CBS from shows such as Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Star Trek, MacGyver and Love Boat, in addition to clips from 60 Minutes and 48 Hours. The clips will also appear to international users on CBS.com and CBSNews.com.
Set-top box movie service Vudu is expanding beyond rentals, announcing it will begin offering download-to-own HD movies for the first time. Under agreements with indie film studios such as Magnolia Pictures, FirstLook Studios and Kino, Vudu will begin by offering 50 HD titles for purchase, including Oscar winner for best documentary Man on Wire.
MSNBC.com introduced an innovative new video portal to offer additional content complimentary to President Obama’s address to Congress last night. The interface allows users to search the transcript of the speech and pull corresponding video segments from the address for posting to third-party sites. The tool can be used to peruse more than 20 indexed Obama speeches and press conferences.
In an effort to promote U2’s latest release on March 3, Comcast has lined up nearly 50 of the band’s music videos and concerts to offer to its on demand customers for free in HD.
Ludia Inc. signed a deal with Entertainment Rights to create a line of video games based on the Where’s Waldo? Franchise. Look for Waldo on consoles, PC/Mac, iPhone and iPod touch later this year.
Viewers in the U.S. can now catch a spot of “Corrie” online. UK-based ITV Global Entertainment began distributing Coronation Street, one of television’s longest running continuing primetime dramas, via Amazon Video On Demand platform. ITV Global plans to release 20 new episodes a month for purchase or rental beginning with the Christmas 2007 storyline.
Semantic search specialist Yoogli launched a new music discovery destination YoogliMusic as a free social networking and automated music playlist generation site. Utilizing its patented personalization technology the site enables users to find and create playlists based on their current music library and music tastes. Using personalization and search technologies, new artists and customized playlists are continuously recommended to the user from a database of over 7,000,000 songs and 400,000 artists.
Albie Hecht’s digital entertainment studio Worldwide Biggies released its second original web series, El Vacio (Spanish for “void”,) as an exclusive to MTVN’s Atom.com video portal, which has the right to distribute it across the web. A parody of over-personal web videos and IM messages, the 15-episode sketch comedy series stars a cast of established late night television writers and performers including Dominic Dierkes, a founding member of DERRICKcomedy and Jonathan Gabrus, a member of the “fwand” improv team with Dominic.

The Adify-powered Gay Ad Network has expanded its focus launching the Lesbian Ad Network offering custom editorial sponsorships, viral widget syndication, and video advertising across sites such as Curve, Olivia and TheLWordOnline. Chemistry.com and Switzerland Tourism has signed on as the official network launch partners for both sites.
Broadcom announced the integration of Chumby content into TV sets, Blu-ray players and set-tops powered by Broadcom’s latest “system-on-a-chip” solution. When completed more than 1,000 widgets on the cuddly little $200 Wi-Fi powered device will be accessible on broadband-connected televisions including apps from Pandora, the New York Times and Scripps Networks.
Viacom’s MTV Networks and BET Networks are partnering with TVN Entertainment Corp. to make a variety of shows available to users on demand including Baldwin Hills, The City, and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart in both standard and high-def formats.
America may lag behind Asia and Europe in affordable broadband and connection speeds but the U.S. is #1 in a new measure dubbed the Connectivity Scorecard, as determined by a new methodology created by Leonard Waverman, Prof. of Economics at the London Business School with funding from Nokia Siemens Networks. Dividing a nation into the three “pillars” of consumers, businesses and government, the study ranks countries on a total of 30 indicators that affect productivity including broadband, mobile and fixed line infrastructure that contribute to a nation’s social and economic development. The U.S. scored the highest rank because connectivity in business use is very advanced, according to Prof. Waverman.

Photo and video sharing service Phanfare launched an updated version of its Phanfare Photon iPhone app adding the ability to send multiple photos or even entire albums from the Phanfare service to Facebook. VOD tracking service Rentrak released a new $4.99 consumer app for the iPhone named FilmScope offering top line U.S. domestic box office results and expanded film information. Its search feature allows you to search for movies by actor, director or title. The calendar tool provides a schedule of upcoming film releases.

Here’s a new communication service that has figured out both a business model and a multiplatform strategy right out of the gate. StoryZ is a new viral user generated content site that allows users to communicate with friends using text, video and photos to enhance their messages. It launches with integrations with Facebook and the iPhone but embeddable widgets and a variety of other mobile integrations including Blackberry and Android are on the way, says StoryZ head of Business Development JT Klepp. The key here is combining social directories with the digital tool that’s always with you; the iPhone app is very well done and it may be an early secret to its success if it can reach a critical mass. Being able to send photo messages to anyone on your friends list is a compelling offering that should interest marketers, who can involve the community with simple challenges that go out as branded viral messages.
