Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 10, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  

Little Airplane Productions is growing again with the launch of Little Airplane Books.   Helmed by writer/director/producer Tone Thyne, Little Airplane Books will develop and produce original books targeted to preschoolers and early readers.  The new division will host a special reading event at Little Airplane Studios in NYC, December 18 at 5p, which will include actress Marcia Gay Harden reading to kids.  In September of this year Little Airplane set up Little Airplane Films.  Founded by Josh Selig, Little Airplane Productions produces preschool shows including The Wonder Pets, Go, Baby!, Oobi, and 3rds & Bird!

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Little Portman, the new kids division of Digital Rights Group, enters into a co-production deal for a second season of its sketch comedy series for K8-12, Sorry, I’ve Got No Head.  For the new episodes Little Portman is partnering with So Television, which produces the show, and Nickelodeon Australia.  Additionally, Nickelodeon Australia has acquired the first season of Sorry, I’ve Got No Head and plans to premiere the series in February 2009.  The series launched this past summer on CBBC and BBC1.

Disney Channel picks up a second season of it Playhouse Disney series Imagination Movers.  Production on the new season of 26 episodes will take place in New Orleans this spring 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney-Pixar will premiere its first Disney Digital 3-D short film, Tokyo Mater, in theaters nationwide beginning December 12.  Directed by John Lasseter, Tokyo Mater will run before Disney’s Bolt.  The animated short is the fourth in the Cars Toons series, which are based on the Disney-Pixar movie Cars (2006).  A 2-D computer version of Tokyo Mater will also be available for theaters showing Bolt in 2-D.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into an exclusive content deal for several of its properties with Walt Disney International-India.  Under the licensing deal three of DQE’s animated series, Twisted Whiskers, Ratman and Sandra, will air on Disney’s multiplex of kid and family channels across India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, beginning in the next few months: Twisted Whiskers  CGI animated series co-produced by DQE, American Greetings (US) and Taffy Entertainment (US); Ratman  a 2D animated show co-produced with Stranemani (Italy); and the animated series Sandra is co-produced with Imira Entertainment (Spain).

Brand Performance, a developer of kid-targeted licensed characters, launches a new social network/online video portal Thwoop.com to build active communities around its characters. Kids can view full-length videos of NCircle Entertainment shows, including Hopla and Animal Atlas, purchase merchandise or upload their own reviews of their favorite products. Magnify.net is powering the site’s video platform.

Hit Entertainment, The Jim Henson Company and Teletoon (Canada) to bring Henson’s Fraggle Rock to Canada.  The first season of Fraggle Rock, celebrating its 25th anniversary, is airing in Canada on Teletoon Retro English channel, daily at 9:30a and 7:30p.  This fall Hit and Lion Cub Films release all four seasons of Fraggle Rock on DVD.

ITV Global Entertainment heads to Asia Television Forum, which will be held later this week in Singapore, with a slate of programming including the teen musical drama Britannia High (8×50, 1×90)  which revolves around a group of students at a British performing arts school.  Also available is the Behind The Scenes Documentary (2×50) specials, ITV Productions for ITV1.

MARKETING/LICENSING

As part of its partnership with Hachette Fillipacchi Media U.S.’s ELLE magazine, virtual doll site Stardoll will unveil an ELLE-branded boutique filled with virtual fashions and accessories inspired by the magazine’s favorite looks and trends of the season.

Chorion appoints Bandai as the UK toy distributor for Noddy.  This expands Chorion’s existing relationship with Bandai, which was recently named the toy distributor for the property in Spain, including distributing products from master toy licensee NSR from January 2009.  Additionally, Chorion celebrate the 60th anniversary of Noddy in 2009 with plans including 52 new episodes of Noddy in Toyland, new toys and a new live show.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Marvel Entertainment names Tim Connors as COO, Marvel Studios.  In addition to managing the day-to-day business operations of the studio, Connors will oversee business transactions for all studio productions including all upcoming movies (e.g. Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America and so on).  Most recently, Connors served as EVP/Business Affairs and Operations, Marvel Studios.

Peter Salmon is appointed Director, BBC North effective mid-2009 and will also join the BBC’s executive Board in 2010; he will be based at the BBC’s new center in Salford Quays, Greater Manchester.  When Salmon, currently Chief Creative Officer, BBC Vision, takes on his new position he will be responsible for BBC Children’s, which includes CBBC and CBeebies, as well as overseeing BBC Sport, the radio networks BBC Radio 5 Live and 5 Live Sports Extra, all of which will be based at Salford.  He will also have managerial oversight’ of BBC Learning and a portion of the Future Media & Technology.

RATINGS

Merry Christmas Drake & Josh, the new 2-hour holiday special that premiered on Nickelodeon, Friday, December 5 (8p), now stands as the most watched live-action TV movie among Total Viewers 2+ (8.1 million) and K2-11 (4.3 million) in the network’s history.  The movie was also the top entertainment cable program for the week (December 1-7, 2008) with Total Viewers 2+, and also tops across broadcast and cable among K2-11, K6-11 (3.4 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.9 million).
