Cynopsis: Kids!

08/13/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

ICO Global Communications Ltd., which is developing satellite services that will make video and programming available in cars and other remote locales, inks a deal with Turner Broadcasting System to provide content from Cartoon Network and Adult Swim in its alpha trials of its mobile media service, ICO mim.  The alpha trials begin soon in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and Las Vegas, Nevada.  ICO has already entered into deals for its trials with NBC Universal and Discovery Networks.

The release of the new Pokemon movie, Giratina and the Sky’s Bouquet: Shaymin, in Japan on July 19, has earned $32 million at the box office so far, sending the total of 11 Pokemon movies to some $460 million, per AnimeNewsNetwork.com.  The first Pokemon movie was released in Japan in 1998.

If you have been following the record-breaking box office sales at Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater for the new musical stage production of Little House on the Prairie, which by the way doesn’t open until this Friday, August 15, you won’t be too surprised to learn that the show will head out on a 40-city tour beginning in fall 2009, per Playbill.com.  The run of the show at the Guthrie has already been extended by two weeks taking it through October 19.  The actual tour schedule is TBD.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes to DVD and Blue-ray on October 14, 2008.  Released by Lucasfilm Ltd. and Paramount Home Entertainment, the film will be available as a two-disc Special Edition DVD and Blu-ray packed with bonus features.  In addition, all four Indiana Jones films will be showcased in the Indiana Jones collection entitled The Complete Adventure Collection, which will include the first three films plus the two-disc Special Edition DVD of Crystal Skull.  (www.indianajones.com)

BBC Worldwide will release the CBBC sci-fi drama, The Sarah Jane Adventures, on DVD in the UK this November 10, 2008.  The DVD release features episodes from season one of the series.  A spin-off of Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures revolves around investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith and traveling companion to Doctor Who.

Willmoss Films teams with Brandissimo to produce and release a new preschool-targeted DVD series, It’s Monkey Time!  The first of four titles to be released quarterly, Meet the Monkeys, will be available from September 2, 2008 at supermarkets and specialty stores.  The It’s Monkey Time DVD series follows the adventures of seven monkeys and their trainer, Sue, as they learn and grow together with the help of various musical styles and an emphasis on social and fine motor skills, as well as introducing a selection of Spanish words.  Rodney Satterwhite, who was most recently COO/Genius Products, and previously toiled as a VP at Take Two Interactive and Warner Home Video, founded Willmoss Films.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Koch Records releases the soundtrack of the animated movie Barbie & The Diamond Castle on CD on September 12, 2008.  The soundtrack debuts just days after Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s releases the direct-to-DVD of Barbie & The Diamond Castle on September 9.  Ahead of the CD and DVD Nickelodeon will offer a sneak peek of the Barbie & The Diamond Castle on Sunday, September 7.  Mattel, which owns Barbie, has already rolled out a line of toys and licensed products to support the new movie.

Cinnamon Entertainment appoints The Sharpe Company in the US and The Parthenon Group in the UK to represent licensing for Freefonix (40×30), its music-centric CGI animated series targeted to kids/tweens 7-15.  Produced by Cinnamon, Method Films and Toonz Animation, Freefonix debuted on BBC1 in Q1 2008, with season two slated to bow later this year.  The series was created by music producer Magnus Fiennes and features a range of noted musicians and actors.

Nintendo releases the Nintendo DS Limited Edition Pokemon Pack this Sunday, August 17.  The pack includes a Pokemon-themed DS Lite unit, featuring etched images of two characters from the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl games, a previously unreleased animated episode, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness based on a recent DS game, a poster and a themed carrying case.

Egmont is set to launch a Ben 10 magazine in the UK later this month.  Based on Cartoon Network’s animated series Ben 10, the magazine debuts with two 32-page specials titled All About … Ben 10.  The first of the two issues will be available from late August and will be packaged with a disc shooter and Ben 10 Omnitrix branded watch.  The second issue publishes later in the year and will also be packaged with toys and other property related items.  The initial magazines will also feature stickers, poster and series and character information.  The magazine will begin monthly production from early 2009.
