Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 04, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A Kentucky win over Kansas helped propel CBS Sports‘ coverage of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship on Monday to a 12.3/19 according to Nielsen fast national data, for a 5% spike over the 2011 game. That rating would rank as the second-best number for the National Championship in seven years. The matchup averaged 20.9 million viewers for a 4% gain and peaked in the 11:30-11:44p quarter hour at a 13.4/25. Overall, the NCAA Tournament averaged a 6.1/13, off from last year’s 6.4/14 but still up in rating over 2010’s 6.0/13, according to the data.

On the Air

FUEL TV reports that the channel ranks as television’s fastest-growing cable network this year, according to Nielsen Media Research. For both the Total Day and Prime Time, the network recorded the largest percentage increases of total viewers among all rated, ad-supported cable networks in the first quarter of 2012. Of course, that projector has been bolstered by UFC programming which began in January, and led to February scoring as the network’s most-watched month ever with its first live UFC fight. Overall, FUEL TV aired 233 hours of UFC programming in February and added another 213 hours in March. FUEL TV telecast 646 hours of UFC programming in the first three months of 2012. March finished up 100% in Total Viewers and +167% in M18-49 vs. March 2011.

While we are on the topic of MMA, Spike TV is expanding its Bellator FC programming and adding a reality series based on the promotion to its schedule, according to multiple reports. The network has tapped “The Amazing Race” executive producer Bertram van Munster to create the new unscripted series showcasing fighters that will launch in 2013.

FOX Sports Media Group upped John Entz to Executive Vice President, Production and Executive Producer, FSMG. Entz will assume his new position immediately and becomes the fifth executive producer in FOX Sports’ 18-year history, where he will oversees all studio and event production for the networks and entities within FSMG, including FOX Sports, the FOX Sports Regional Networks, SPEED, FOX Deportes, FOX Soccer, FUEL TV and FOXSports.com. Entz also serves in an advisory capacity to the Big Ten Network.

The live CONCACAF Olympic Qualifier soccer semifinal match between Mexico and Canada on Saturday delivered over 1.6 million total viewers and was the top primetime program on Spanish language TV that night among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. In addition, the Mexico vs. Honduras final on Monday delivered 1,893,000 total viewers, 1,215,000 adults 18-49 and 833,000 men 18-49, to score as the most watched game of the seven CONCACAF Olympic Qualifier matches broadcast by Telemundo.

Time Warner Cable is launching MLB Network today, just in time to showcase Major League Baseball’s 2012 Opening Day, for former Insight customers in Lexington, Ky, Louisville, Evansville, IN, Northern KY (Cincinnati DMA), Columbus, OH and Bowling Green, KY. The company also announced that MLB Extra Innings for customers in those markets will launch April 24. Thursday’s Opening Day will find over 10 hours of live coverage of MLB Network, beginning with a special morning edition of Intentional Talk with Chris Rose and Kevin Millar at 10a and include a Dodgers/Padres matchup at 7p.

The 2012 MLB on FOX season opens on Saturday, April 7at 3:30p with the Red Sox/Tigers game set to air in 43% of the country. Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal will handle the microphones. Other parts of the country will see the Cardinals/Brewers (27%) with Royals/Angels in 17% and Giants/Diamoondbacks in 12%. Coverage begins with the FOX Saturday Baseball Pregame Show hosted by Matt Vasgersian who is joined by analysts Harold Reynolds and Kevin Millar this week.

Georgia State could be joining the Sun Belt Conference this week, with CBSSports.com reporting that conference presidents voted via teleconference to extend an invitation to the school. The Atlanta Journal Constitution, however, states that Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson said his conference hasn’t decide to invite Georgia State, and contradicted a report on CBSSports.com that the presidents voted.

EPIX is turning to boxing fans, announcing that undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion Lucian Bute will make his 10th world title defense when he faces two-time World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch on Saturday, May 26. The bout will be promoted by Matchroom Sport, Ltd. and InterBox, and televised live in the U.S., from Nottingham Arena, in Nottingham, England. EpixHD.com will stream the fight live as part of a special free trial offer for boxing fans.

Despite concerns of construction delays, the 2014 World Cup stadiums are on schedule in all 12 host cities, the Brazilian government said to the AP. The government said that five stadiums already have more than 50% of the work completed, while another five have more than 30% of construction wrapped up. Two more are reportedly about 20% finished. The report contradicts a report released last month stating that only two stadiums were more than half way finished.

Now an official NFL partner, Nike unveiled the new team jerseys in a big media event, with the Seattle Seahawks taking the most changes to their uniforms. 

The NBA and Sprint today have officially tipped off NBA Green Week presented by Sprint, running through April 11. As part of the program, the entire NBA umbrella, along with the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Sprint will team up to draw awareness and funding to protect the environment. Sprint is serving as the first-ever presenting partner of NBA Green Week, which began in 2009. As part of the campaign, the NBA and Sprint will launch “Unlimited Acts of Green,” an exclusive Facebook application to encourage fans to make greener choices in their daily lives. In addition, throughout NBA Green Week, adidas will outfit all players with 100 percent organic cotton NBA Green shooting shirts.

Today, ESPN is releasing its first-ever Spanish-language spot from the This is SportsCenter campaign franchise. The spot, dubbed Handshakes, features New York Yankees All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano in a send-up of his popular handshake routine with teammates. The promo will run in both English and Spanish in the United States and across Latin America and debut in Spanish at 9a on ESPN Deportes.

The 2012 NHL playoffs gearing up next week, the New York Rangers are launching a new playoff campaign to celebrate the post-season appearance and drive fans. The playoff campaign will be centered around the tag “Believe.” and will be activated via television, online and outdoor advertising. The campaign is highlighted by the branding of Times Square to Grand Central shuttle trains and double-decker buses throughout the city.

Fuse Science is celebrating Tiger Woods’ return to victory with a promotion for fans to win away an autographed “Powered by Fuse” Tiger Woods golf bag.

Mass Relevance has named Matt Corey as Chief Marketing Officer. The marketing veteran and former CMO of Golfsmith will now lead the company’s marketing and product strategy, driving the product roadmap for Mass Relevance’s client base, which includes NBC Sports, New York Giants, MSNBC, The Oscars, Universal Music Group, Victoria’s Secret, Golf Digest, and Al Jazeera.

CBSSports.com is launching a new daily live video show catering to fantasy baseball players. Monday through Friday from 5-6p called Fantasy Baseball 360 on CBSSports.com. The show will cover fantasy baseball from setting lineups, to finding free agents, scouting prospects, making trades and in-depth analysis of all the latest news and rumors across the major leagues. Jorge Sedano hosts with experts that include Nando Di Fino, Al Melchior, and Scott White along with CBSSports.com’s MLB Insider Jon Heyman and Baseball Columnists Scott Miller and Danny Knobler. CBSSports.com’s fantasy service was recently redesigned, allowing third party developers and companies to create apps for their products and services integrated directly into CBSSports.com’s fantasy sports service.

Brackets in ESPN.com’s Men’s Tournament generated 35.1% of 6.45 million brackets correctly picking favorite Kentucky to win the title, easily besting last year’s guesses. All Men’s Tournament Challenge brackets that finished in the top 1% are entered in a random drawing for the $10,000 Best Buy Gift Card prize.

Email marketing company ExactTarget says that 2,065,060 NCAA Tournament-related tweets were posted between March 15 and April 2. “Final Four” was the top trending phrase with 466,492 tweets, and ESPN’s SportsCenter Twitter account scored the most popular tweet of the tourney. According to Twitter, people sent more than 30,000 tweets per minute after the championship game wrapped up.
