Cynopsis: Kids!

04/29/09

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 29, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Australian federal government is granting money to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) to create a new dedicated kid’s TV channel, which will be titled ABC3.  The new digital kid-targeted ABC3 channel will feature existing ABC Kids series, currently airing on ABC TV (Australia) as well as newly commissioned and acquired programming.  ABC3 will be available free of charge and without advertising to all Australian households.  The ABC is counting on ABC3 being another reason for Australians to convert to digital TV.  The ABC currently offers preschool and/or kid programming on its ABC1 and ABC2 channels.  No word yet about a specific launch date for ABC3.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Universal Pictures and Working Title Films, in association with Three Strange Angels Productions, will begin principal photography early next month on the movie sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.  Emma Thompson reprises her role as both Nanny McPhee and the screenwriter on the feature, which will also star Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans and Dame Maggie Smith.  Currently set for release in 2010, Susanna White (TV’s Bleak House, Generation Kill, Jane Eyre) directs the movie, which will be executive produced by Thompson along with Working Title’s Debra Hayward and Liza Chasin.  Producers are Lindsay Doran and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network celebrates the final episodes of its animated series, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, as part of a six-hour Foster’s marathon of five episodes, including the series finale, Goodbye to Bloo, this Sunday, May 3, 1-7p.  The marathon begins with favorite Foster’s episodes 1-4:30p, with the final premiere episodes debuting back-to-back from 4:30p.  Created by animator Craig McCracken (The Powerpuff Girls), Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends (78×30, 3 feature-length specials) premiered on Cartoon Network on August 13, 2004.

Nickelodeon launches season three of The Wonder Pets! with a week of new episodes, Monday-Friday, May 18-22 at 10:30a.  The premiere week features special guest appearances by the late Eartha Kitt and jazz singer Jon Hendricks, and the Friday episode celebrates 100 rescues including visits from animals saved by the Wonder Pets.  The new season also includes guest appearances from the likes of Lauren Bacall and Ben Vereen.  The Wonder Pets! is produced by Little Airplane Productions.  Nick Jr. will roll out content from The Wonder Pets! season three premiere week across various platforms, including Nick Jr. Video, with clips made available on various wireless carriers, as well as episodes available throughout May via Nickelodeon on Demand.  Additionally, all of the week’s episodes will be simulcast on Nickelodeon Mobile.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Del Rey Manga, an imprint of Random House Publishing Group’s Ballantine Books, in collaboration with Cartoon Network Enterprises, unveil plans to release two new film graphic novels based on Cartoon Network’s action-adventure series, The Secret Saturdays.  The first Secret Saturdays film-comic title will publish in September 2009, followed by a second title.  Together Del Rey Manga and Cartoon Network Enterprises debuted the Ben 10 Alien Force and Bakugan Battle Brawlers film-comics in fall 2008

New consumer products deals for MTV Networks International and Nickelodeon and Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP):

  • NVCP Germany enters into a summer promotion with local highway service station food outlet, Tank&Rast, throughout Germany.  The promotion, which begins in June, will feature SpongeBob SquarePants give-a-ways as part of the kids’ menus at all participating outlets, as well as Serways restaurants.
  • The Netherlands names a tulip after Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants with a ceremony held at the Keukenhof botanical gardens.
  • NVCP is set to launch a two-pronged licensing program for the preschool animated series Ni Hao, Kai-Lan in the UK, where the series will premiere on Nick Jr. in September 2009.  The first product lines are aimed at tween/teen girls and will be available in stores from September, beginning with Urban Outfitters, followed by other retailers.  Preschool toys and products are set to follow fall/winter 2010.

E1 Entertainment (f/k/a Contender Entertainment Group) will showcase a range of properties at the upcoming Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, including the new series Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom and Humf.  E1 will also highlight the special Lost and Found (1×30), which is based on the kid’s book from illustrator Oliver Jeffers, and ongoing successful property Peppa Pig.
