Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
03.19.13
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 19, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
I’ve just starting working at a new company. How important, if at all, is it to make new friends there?
It depends on what the culture of your office is. If people socialize after work and on weekends and you want to be a part of it, then do. If your life and personal commitments mean that you can’t join colleagues at after-work social occasions, then you may want to let them know that you’d like to be a part of the group, but cannot spend time with them after hours. If they’re mature, they will certainly understand.
That being said, it’s always a good idea to try to foster friendly and collegial working relationships while you’re on the job. Chances are that the better and stronger your relationships are with co-workers, the easier it will be to accomplish the tasks that you need help and assistance on. And it makes the day go faster, too.
What’s the best way to resolve conflict with a superior?
The first thing to do is find out if your company has an employee handbook, and if so, follow the rules of the handbook to see if they have any protocol outlined for such a situation. You also may want to ask your boss, in writing, for a short meeting. At that meeting, be prepared. For example, if she thinks your work isn’t getting done in a timely fashion, create a deadline schedule and ask her to approve it. If she isn’t happy with the substance of your work, ask for specific suggestions of what she doesn’t like and then go back to her in a week, in writing, with a plan for how you will be incorporating her comments.
I’m going to my first job fair. How can get the most out of it?
Job fairs are filled with people who want the same positions you do, so you want to stand out in a positive way. Dress professionally (no jeans!), make good eye contact, use a firm handshake, and make sure to have plenty of business cards, resumes, letters of recommendation with you. Also, do your homework: Get a list of the companies who will have reps there and research what the firm does and what skills you’d bring to them. Prepare 3 intelligent questions to ask the company’s rep. Finish up by asking how they’d like you to follow up (phone call? email?) at the end of the conversation. And good luck!
