Summer heats up early on FOX as the network unveiled premiere dates for new and returning series:
- So You Think You Can Dance bows a new season May 26 at 8p with part 1 followed by part 2 on June 1 at 8p.
- MasterChef opens a new season June 6 at 8p with part 1 and part 2 on June 7 at 8p.
- Hell’s Kitchen is back with its season premiere July 19 at 9p.
- In addition, FOX scheduled two season finales on June 18 with Cops at 8p and America’s Most Wanted at 9p.
A day after The Bachelor handed out the final rose Monday night, ABC renewed the reality series for a 16th season slated to debut in early 2012 while the seventh season of The Bachelorette launches May 23 at 9p and moves to its regular time slot of Mondays at 8p starting May 30. This most recent season of The Bachelor featuring Brad Womack averaged 10.2 million viewers each week.
ABC set the premiere date for its Extreme Makeover spinoff series as Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition opens May 30 at 1001p, airing after The Bachelorette. Trainer and transformation specialist, Chris Powell mentors eight participants all deemed “super obese” as they lose dramatic amounts of weight during the course of a year. Each one-hour episode is a stand-alone featuring a single participant’s journey as Powell moves into their homes with their families or loved ones and oversees their exercise and nutrition makeover. The series is produced by 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA, the producers behind The Biggest Loser and MasterChef.
Expensive classic cars are showcased in Discovery Channel’s new series South Beach Classics rolling out March 30 at 10p. The Miami-based series is set at Florida’s largest classic car dealership run by the husband and wife business team of Ted and Robin Vernon and their unusual crew dubbed “the gargoyles.” South Beach Classics is produced for Discovery Channel by Pioneer Productions.
Next Monday, the new multi-platform series, The Cut debuts on Music Choice. The Cut features today’s top artists and video choices in a thematic format. The show will be available via Music Choice On Demand in addition to SWRV, its 24/7 interactive video network. Z100 on-air personality NIKO serves as host.
Leftfield Pictures, behind HISTORY’s Pawn Stars, offers up a new half-hour series on the network, American Restoration premiering April 15 at 10p with two stacked episodes. The series goes inside Rick’s Restorations in Las Vegas, owned by Rick Dale who takes pieces of broken history and restores the items into treasures.
Bi-cultural Latino network Si TV reveals plans for a major branding and programming overhaul to become nuvoTV on July 4, 2011. The network will transform its on-air look and feel as well as expanding its programming schedule. nuvoTV is described as “bolder and more vibrant” than its previous incarnation while offering English-language entertainment programming aiming at Bi-Cultural Latinos. With its programming, nuvoTV will continue to offer many current original series such as the reality competition show Model Latina, the pop culture comedy program Latino 101 and on weekends, a nuvoTV Cinema block featuring Latino films and other Hollywood films appealing to American Latinos. Furthermore, nuvoTV has three new original series in production:
- Operation: Osmin Mad man trainer Osmin works with 10 participants through challenging workouts that are part cardio, part street fighting and part grueling resistance training. From Hot Snakes Media.
- Mission Menu Cooking show follows four experienced chefs and their team as they travel to Latin American countries to learn local foods and find secret recipes. From Bray Entertainment.
- PastPort Series shadows Latino celebrities as they each take an emotional journey to their families’ homeland for the first time. From Mike Mathis Productions.
Comedian Bert Kreischer is back for a new season of Bert the Conqueror debuting April 3 at 8p on Travel Channel. In each new episode, Bert travels the US coast-to-coast to experience thrilling local adventures, competitions and rides offering fun for the whole family. Sharp Entertainment produces for the Travel Channel.

Production commenced in Toronto on Global Television’s new medical drama The Hot Zone (wt, formerly titled Combat Hospital). The 13-episode, one-hour drama was picked up by ABC though no premiere date has been set. Production will continue until this July. The Hot Zone stars an ensemble cast consisting of Elias Koteas as Col. Marks; Michelle Borth as Canadian surgeon Dr. Rebecca Gordon; Luke Mably as neurosurgeon Dr. Simon Hill; Deborah Kara Unger as Australian army psychiatrist Major Ada Pedersen; Terry Chen as trauma team leader Capt. Bobby Trang; and Arnold Pinnock as Commander Will Royal, Chief of Nursing. The series is produced by Canada’s Sienna Films and UK’s Artists Studio. Global Television is a Shaw Media network.
Julie Benz and her castmate Michael Chiklis on ABC’s No Ordinary Family, are joining a fall pilot. Benz was added to the one-hour CBS untitled pilot from Susannah Grant, described as a supernatural medical drama with Jonathan Demme directing. The plot centers on Michael (Patrick Wilson) a highly-competitive surgeon whose life is changed forever when his ex-wife (Jennifer Ehle), a doctor who runs a free clinic, dies and starts to teach him what life is all about from the hereafter. Benz will play Michael’s sister, a disorganized single mom with a generous heart. Chiklis is headlining the CBS comedy pilot Vince Uncensored as announced last week. Both pilots are in second position to the ABC superhero drama.
NBC tapped Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show) for the drama pilot REM, starring opposite Jason Isaacs, reports TVLine. The pilot is billed as an Inception-style thriller about Detective Mark Britten (Isaacs) who wakes up after an accident to find he’s living in two different realities. Valderrama will portray Detective Richard Vega, Britten’s energetic new partner. BD Wong and Laura Allen have also been cast.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision ended the workweek a winner posting the same ratings the previous Friday night at 1.7/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Univision’s Eva Luna shined in first place at 1.9/6 followed by FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares at 1.7/6. CBS took over at 9p with CSI: NY at 1.9/6 while Univision’s Triunfo del Amor was a close #2 at 1.8/6. NBC’s Dateline rounded out the night posting a 1.9/6 at 10p and CBS’ Blue Bloods was a step behind with 1.8/6.

Joe Uva, President/CEO resigned his position, giving notice to the Board of Directors at Univision Communications Inc. Joe’s exit is effective April 2, 2011, marking the end of the current term of his employment contract with Univision. The company will begin an immediate search for a new CEO and during the transition period, Haim Saban, Executive Chairman will take on more responsibilities until a CEO replacement is found. Joe said, “My four years as President and CEO of Univision have been extremely exciting and rewarding. I believe our team can be proud of the accomplishments that we achieved during my tenure. Although I will miss working with the many talented professionals at Univision, the team is strong and I have decided the time is right for me to capitalize on other opportunities. I know that Univision will continue its great success as the premier Spanish-language media company in the U.S.”
Patricia Erickson named SVP/Human Resources with BBC Worldwide Americas to head the company’s human resource functions. Previously, Patricia worked for Viacom and MTV Networks and most recently at RHI Entertainment, Inc. as SVP/Head of HR.
Katz Radio upped Katie Iamele-Strauss to VP/Sales and Alison Trumper to Senior AE in New York in addition to David Noviello to VP/Sales in Los Angeles.
Tom Armstrong promoted to VP/Digital Sales, Viacom Brand Solutions International (VBSI) by Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN). In his new role, Tom will manage advertising sales for VIMN’s digital platforms. He will relocate to VIMN’s London headquarters after spending four years in Australia where he was VP/Business Development and Digital, MTV Networks Australia and New Zealand. Tom will report to Dave Sibley, EVP/Managing Director, VBSI.
Fuse hired Brad Schwartz as SVP/Programming and Operations to continue growing the network’s development strategy involving original programming, live events and increasing the Fuse brand. Brad will oversee all program development, acquisitions, programming, scheduling, creative and production. Based in New York, Brad will report to David Clark, EVP/GM. In addition, Fuse said Sal LoCurto will now manage Fuse’s Los Angeles development operation and report to Brad.
Drew Korzeniewski elevated to VP/Ad Sales and GM for Radio Disney Stations Group. Drew will be involved with managing the network’s national ad sales while continuing to head Radio Disney’s local ad sales and local station management. In his role supervising local and national ad sales, Drew will report to Rita Ferro, EVP/Disney Media Sales and Marketing and for spearheading the network’s stations group, he will continue to report to Sean Cocchia, SVP/GM, Radio Disney.
Phil Fairclough joins the New Zealand production company, National History New Zealand to oversee their US development and production activities. Based in Washington, D.C., Phil will assume the title of EVP/US Development and Production, effective immediately. He will work closely with New Zealand-based executives Neil Harraway and Craig Meade as well as Shera Jenne based in DC.
