Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

06.09.09

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, June 9, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!  This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

As I have become more familiar with the qualifications employers expect, one common thread throughout the industry is knowledge of computer programs.  Most jobs require expertise in Microsoft’s Office suite, while many other openings demand additional software mastery. Obtaining these skills can be very expensive and time consuming.

If you are computer illiterate and need to learn these programs or if you would like to add new proficiencies to your resume, take a look at Lynda.com.  Lynda.com is an online video training site and courses include Photoshop, Flash, Final Cut Pro, Illustrator, Microsoft Office, Quickbooks and many others. Both Mac and PC platforms are covered and each program has a few free lessons. This will allow you at assess their value prior to signing up. Costs start at $25 a month with no long term commitments necessary.

Obviously, the more software you can use with confidence, the more valuable your resume will become to future employers.

GOOD NEWS THAT SOUNDS BAD …

Unemployment hit 9.4%, the highest it has been in twenty-five years. That translates into 345,000 more jobs lost in the month of May. So how can this be good news? It is the smallest loss of jobs since the financial crisis began last fall, creating hope among top financial experts that an economic recovery may take hold as early as 4th quarter 2009.

AND FOR SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS…

CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index numbers for May 2009 showed a sharp increase in C-level and other executive jobs postings. The downward trend started in September 2008 and has continued virtually unabated since. However, the data suggests that April 2009 may have been rock bottom and May 2009 data demonstrates a marked increase in postings. Though the index score shows that just 56.6 jobs have been posted for every 100 jobs posted in May of 2007, it is a significant improvement over April’s index score of 41.4.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~

DO THE MATH – HOW MUCH ACTIVITY DO YOU NEED TO ENGAGE IN UNTIL YOU GET THE DESIRED OUTCOME … YOUR NEW JOB?

By Peter Roche

As the TV commercial says, “You’ve got to have a plan!” And, you need to execute against the plan. A job search requires focus and discipline, especially in a crowded job scarce market. How much work will it take? We don’t know, so plan for more than you think it will take.

Until you find paid employment, “job hunting” is your full-time job. This means you need to approach your job search with the same rigor and discipline your future employer will expect.

Some “must do” daily activities – see more ideas;

1.      Day 1: Create a plan:

  • What outcome – and by when – be specific. You need the specific outcome to know what actions are needed
  • Create a tracking mechanism for the plan; for example, who to contact, title, company, when contacted, when you sent a resume, meeting scheduled, and so on

2.      Day 1 (continued) and every day until an offer is accepted:

  • Tell people you are looking for a job – have a specific number in your plan.
  • Ask them for one or two referrals and ask them to put the word out to their network, don’t rely on them to think to do that
  • Remind X number of people you have already told that you are still looking. Ask if they have thought of new referrals, or heard of any suitable openings, or have any advice for you. Ask is the operative word
  • Speak to X number of contacts or referrals ideally in person or on the phone to arrange exploratory meetings or interviews
  • Research: visit job sites, post on job sites, read trade press, go to networking meetings, job fairs and trade conferences
  • Send your resume to all your search contacts
  • Do an after action review at the end of each day and prepare the plan for the next day.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers

The economy has caused many of us to have extended job gaps … less politely a lot of us haven’t been able to find work for long periods of time . In my case about 10 months, with VERY sporadic 1 day here, 1 day there work in a satellite part of the industry.

Do I address that on my resume? Do I address that within my cover letter? I use broad stroke dates, always have, on my resume…2009, 2008, etc only, since I am production based and jobs are contract/freelance etc.

Thoughts?

The sub-text for this question is “should I tell the truth?” or “is there some way I can avoid telling the truth with a clever technique because I think the truth might hurt my chances?” My answer to the first is always yes, and to the second always no.

So I recommend when there is a gap in job history, don’t attempt to disguise it or explain it. Leave that for the interview. BTW, a hiring exec would have to be living in a cave to be unaware that the time it takes to find a new job after a lay off can be as long as a year, sometimes more.

What I do recommend though, is that folks come to every interview prepared to say what they did during their “down time” and in what way have they benefitted from, or learned from that experience.
