Late yesterday, the Senate unanimously approved a compromise bill to move the DTV transition date from February 17 to June 12, 2009. The bill, however, must be reconciled quickly with a House version of the bill. Senator Jay Rockefeller, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee worked with ranking Republican Kay Bailey Hutchinson on the compromise bill which included other issues such as dealing with the DTV-to-analog converter box backlog. “Delaying the upcoming DTV switch is the right thing to do,” said Rockefeller in a statement. “I firmly believe that our nation is not yet ready to make this transition at this time. The Senate acted responsibly to give the Obama Administration time to attempt to bring order to a mismanaged process. I want to thank Senator Hutchison for her leadership in this effort. I urge our colleagues in the House to pass this bill and I know Chairman Waxman is working on it.”

Doug Allen is leaving his position as National Executive Director/Chief Negotiator with the Screen Actors Guild. This move comes after a long and bitter internal fight over how Allen has managed SAG’s stagnate negotiations. Yesterday, a “written assent” document, containing signatures representing 53% of the national board, was sent to SAG headquarters in Hollywood, authorizing the replacement of Allen as national executive director. Two weeks ago a move to oust Allen by the moderates within SAG was blocked via filibuster during a board meeting. Former SAG general counsel David White will take over as interim executive director and according to the moderates SAG senior adviser John T. McGuire will now be chief negotiator for all SAG contracts. In addition, the moderates stated they will replace the feature-primetime negotiating committee charged with resuming stalled negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers.

TBS will debut a new comedic microseries tomorrow called My Manny spotlighting GM’s new 2009 Chevy Traverse Crossover. For five weeks, two 2-minute episodes will air each Wednesday within special commercial breaks of Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and at tbs.com. The plot of My Manny is about a busy single mom running her own catering business who finds love and a potential dad for her son when her nanny agency surprises her with a handsome “manny”. State Line Films produces the microseries.

To commemorate the 200th birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of his monumental work On the Origin of Species, National Geographic Channel presents two nights of new programming. On February 8 at 8p, the three-part series Morphed opens, examining new fossil evidence using CGI, 3-D and biomechanic animation. On February 10 at 9p, Darwin’s travels aboard the HMS Beagle will be explored in Darwin’s Secret Notebooks followed by Explorer: Monster Fish of the Congo at 10p.

Spike TV brings back a second season of the series DEA showing the inside dealings of the illegal narcotics trade, this time in New Jersey, and the agents who daily risk their lives. The series opens February 10 at 10p and is produced by Al Roker Entertainment.

Adult Swim continues to break new ground this year as the first live-action series Delocated! debuts February 12 at 1030p. From executive producers Jon Glaser, Vernon Chatman, John Lee and Alyson Levy, Delocated! focuses on Jon and his family who after testifying against the Russian Mafia live undercover in a New York City loft, and instead of leading quiet lives in the witness protection program, become ski-masked reality TV stars.

CBS revs up for the fourteenth edition of The Amazing Race on February 15 at 8p with Phil Keoghan as host.

Gene DeWitt, 65, a 40-year heavy-weight in the agency media industry, died last Thursday after battling pancreatic cancer. DeWitt headed media departments at BBDO and McCann Erickson prior to founding DeWitt Media in 1984. In 2000, he sold his firm to Publicis which then became Optimedia where he served as Chairman/CEO until 2002. Until recently he ran DeWitt Media Strategies and wrote various guest columns in media publications as well as his own blog reporting/commenting on media trends. DeWitt was also a great lover of the arts in New York contributing to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Manhattan Theatre Club, the Metropolitan Opera as well as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Instead of flowers, DeWitt’s family would appreciate donations sent to Saint Bartholomew’s Church at www.stbarts.org/donation.asp. Services for DeWitt will be held today at Saint Bartholomew’s Church in New York at 3p.
