Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

This week marks the launch of Nickelodeon’s ME:TV, a new live interactive programming block that features kid/user generated content and airs daily from 5-7p.  Hosted live from New York City by Alexandra Gizela and Jordan Carlos, Nickelodeon’s ME:TV will wrap around the network’s regular program line-up, include a studio audience and feature several kids each day live via web cam as well as showcasing kid created original content.  Additionally, ME:TV will incorporate online voting, interactive gaming, giveaways and celebrity guests.  Kids interested in submitting their creations can do so through Nick.com ( www.nick.com/metv ) and TurboNick, as well as via snail mail.  Nickelodeon UK launched its own version of ME:TV in fall 2006.

Who knew? As rumor has it Indiana Jones apparently has a son, and in the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie, Indie’s son will be played by Shia LaBeouf, this from the Ain’t It Cool News website.  LaBeouf is well known to kid/tween/teen audiences from his work Even Stevens, the movie version of Holes, and I, Robot among others.  He is also starring in several upcoming movies including Transformers and Disturbia, both executive produced by Steven Spielberg.  Okay, there are other long running rumors as to who will be in the cast of Indie 4 including Natalie Portman (at one point rumored to be Indie’s daughter – oy!) and John Rhys-Davies (who played Sallah in two of the movies).  Most folks are betting on Sean Connery returning as Indie’s Dad and the return visits of love interests Karen Allen and Kate Capshaw.  Spielberg will again take up his role as director for the new Indiana Jones movie, from a script by George Lucas, David Koepp and Jeff Nathanson.  Scheduled for release Memorial Day Weekend, May 22, 2008, Spielberg and Lucas will also serve as Executive Producers.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Jetix Europe has picked up European pay TV, TV distribution, home video and consumer product rights to the animated comedy/adventure series Iggy Arbuckle (26×30′ or 52×11′).  Targeted to K6-11, Iggy Arbuckle is produced by Blueprint Entertainment in association with National Geographic Kids’ Entertainment and C.O.R.E. Toons.  The series is slated to debut on all Jetix Europe channels from August 2007.  Jetix Europe has also acquired the TV distribution rights (outside of free TV distribution rights in Germany and all French language rights), and home video & consumer product agency rights for the series across Europe (with the exception of Scandinavia and Central Eastern Europe).  Buena Vista International Television will handle the TV distribution rights to Iggy Arbuckle on behalf of Jetix Europe and will launch the 26 episodes at MIPTV in April 2007.  Canada’s Teletoon commissioned the series.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. and 4Kids Entertainment have joined with a number of promotional and merchandise partners to support this month’s release of their upcoming CGI TMNT Movie, set for release March 23, 2007. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie promotions and products set for March include:

  • McDonald’s will offer one of eight TMNT premiums with each Happy Meal
  • Airheads will offer, for a limited time, a lime green flavored Airhead inserted into 12 million packs of Airhead candies, with each package also featuring a TMNT tattoo.
  • Time Warner Cable will run TV spots across TWC stations promoting a movie sweepstakes, as well as featuring clips of the movie for its On Demand subscribers, and holding movie screenings in three markets, and mall events Dallas and LA.
  • Additionally Cool Cuts 4 Kids (hair salon chain) will offer TMNT coloring books, card games, as well as screening passes in Dallas; Kmart – customers who buy a TMNT Playmates movie toy (for a minimum of $10) will receive a pack of four collectible TMNT Movie trading cards; Hot Topic  national sweepstakes; Wal-Mart  1,000 stores will give away movie posters to those purchasing a TMNT toy; Toys R Us  with a minimum $20 purchase of Playmates movie toys, will get a $5 TMNT movie branded store gift card.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BBC Vision Studios has appointed Mark Harrison to Head its new Multi-platform, Innovation & Development Studio, and Richard Williams as its Creative Director, Multi-platform for the studio.  Harrison will oversee the new studio and coordinating, development, and production modernization across the Vision Studios group.  Williams is responsible for delivering multi-platform projects across all Vision Studios. Both will sit on the Vision Studios Board.  Most recently, Harrison was head of the Arts Studio as well as head of Production Innovation, Factual & Learning, while Williams was Interactive Executive, Factual.  The Multi-platform, Innovation & Development Studio, the newest of BBC Vision Studio’s 17 production studios, will serve as a hub for coordinating development and production of creative multi-platform content across Vision Studios entertainment, comedy, drama and factual teams.  The Multi-platform, Innovation & Development Studio reports to Keith Scholey Deputy CCO, BBC Vision Studios.
