Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

ESPN and Little LeagueInternational are will team up into the next decade. The two organizations announced an eight-year multi-platform rights extension that begins in 2015 and runs through 2022 that names ESPN the exclusive U.S. rights holder of Little League International. Under the new deal, ESPN will enhance its multi-platform rights package with the rights to air every game from the U.S. Regionals and World Series of each of Little League International’s nine baseball and softball divisions; enhanced digital rights; while ESPN International will continue to have the ability to carry all games in Canada, Mexico, Latin America and South America, Australia and New Zealand.

On the Air

College football kicks off this week with ESPN carrying 46 games in five days as part of the sixth annual DICK’s Sporting Goods Kickoff Week spanning this Thursday through Monday. The season begins Thursday with 10 games across ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN3 and ESPN Radio, including an ESPN doubleheader: North Carolina/South Carolina at 6p followed by Ole Miss/Vanderbilt at 9p. ABC and ESPN will televise two matchups between ranked teams in prime time on Saturday including Georgia/Clemson at 8p on ABC Saturday Night Football Presented by Windows and TCU/LSU in the Cowboys Classic at 9p on ESPN. For the fourth consecutive season, the ESPN Goal Line network will offer unlimited live cut-ins and highlights from numerous top college football games every Saturday starting  at noon. Goal Line is currently available to Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Cox, Cablevision, Verizon FiOS TV, Comcast and Midcontinent Communications customers.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports gears up for the US Open for the 46th consecutive year. Coverage begins on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 11a with men’s and women’s third-round action and wraps with the men’s singles championship on Monday, Sept. 9 at 5p. Overall, CBS Sports broadcasts over 36 hours of the 2013 U.S. Open live from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Lead play-by-play announcer Bill Macatee joins analysts Mary Carillo and John McEnroe in the booth. Jim Courier returns for his fifth year as analyst and calls the action alongside Ian Eagle. Mary Joe Fernandez serves as reporter, and Chris Wragge as a contributor.

ESPN and Turner Sports and reportedly looking to break it off cleanly, and are asking NASCAR to move programming to FOX and NBC Sports next year instead of 2015, according to SBJ.

Two years after joining ESPN, Jerry Rice is once again a free agent. His stint is now over as an NFL analyst, where he had worked for studios on both coasts, and the company has confirmed his departure, according to Awful Announcing.

ESPN laid out plans for this season’s women’s college basketball package, via the ESPN Sunday afternoon package as well as ESPN2’s Big Monday presented by Bud Light series. espnW will supplement ESPN’s in-depth schedule with season-long content, including a preview piece that will run November 4-8. Big Monday highlights include 13 ranked teams featured in the schedule, with defending National Champion Connecticut opening the package on January 13 at Baylor. ESPN Sunday highlights three appearances by Duke, including both games featuring new league member Notre Dame on February 2 and February 23.

NFL Network brings back its acclaimed documentary series A Football Life Presented by Chase for a third season starting Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 9p with an expanded 22-episode season. The channel is also adding A Football Life: Backstory following each episode at 10p with a deeper look into the lives of each subject. The season opens with a profile of LaDainian Tomlinson with other subjects that include NFL Films president Steve Sabol, Pat Summerall, Warren Sapp, Michael Strahan, Jerry Rice & Cris Carter, Randall Cunningham and the 1993 Houston Oilers.

This Saturday, the Iowa State Athletics Department will push the school’s online digital television channel Cyclones.tv onto Mediacom’s statewide cable TV network to provide a live college football telecast. Cyclones.tv Powered by Mediacom will carry a live high-definition football broadcast to HD subscribers of the season opener vs. Northern Iowa on Aug. 31 at 7p on the new cable channel dedicated exclusively to Cyclone sports.

The first two spots, dubbed Get Up a 9 a.m. and Anthem, debuted yesterday. In addition to the TV spots, the campaign will use GameDay’s digital, mobile and social media extensions to engage with college football fans. Viewers are encouraged to use the hashtag #GetUp4GameDay throughout each show.

Digital & Technology

Digital content syndicator CampusInsiders.com launched its slate of signature live programs featuring college sports journalists Bonnie Bernstein and Seth Davis. Weekdays at 1p, the company offers The Download with Bonne Bernstein, offering an inside look at college sports, with studio analysis and debate as well as social media engagement with viewers. On Mondays and Fridays, The Seth David Show runs featuring in-depth interviews with key figures in college sports. In addition to the live shows, Campus Insiders will feature its first live and exclusive college football game this weekend with Eastern Illinois/San Diego State on Saturday at 8p.

UPS and STATS LLC announced new data enhancements for this season’s UPS Team Performance Index (TPI) for college football. The data index measures overall efficiency on offense, defense and special teams for all 125 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams with 14 statistical components with a correlation to a team’s overall success. This season, the TPI will also introduce a new data measurement component that incorporates the quality of each team’s opponent based on their TPI.
