Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, August 11, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Facebook made a rare acquisition yesterday acquiring Mountain View, CA-based social media aggregator FriendFeed, a service that culls together users’ updates from a number of sites in real time including Twitter, Yelp, Netflix, Blogger and Flickr in a single stream. Apparently Facebook can afford it – the 250 million member social network says 83 of the top 100 advertising spenders in the U.S. now use the site to advertise including Johnson & Johnson, Nike and AT&T, per FT. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has predicted a 70% revenue gain for the site this year and expects that the company will be cash-flow positive by next year. FriendFeed will continue to operate normally “for the time being,” says founder Bret Taylor in a blog post.
Comcast has finally added access to the ESPN360.com broadband service, meaning the top MSO’s 17 million+ broadband customers will now be able to access the site’s live streaming content for no extra charge. The deal, which puts ESPN360.com in over 42 million homes, is part of a larger agreement struck in May that also brings ESPNU to a majority of Comcast’s systems. ESPN360.com streams up to 15 live events simultaneously including MLB, PGA Golf, NBA and NCAA College Football events in 16:9 widescreen or 4:3 standard formats. ESPN.com also introduced a college football fantasy game for the first time this year and returns today with a newly redesigned College Pick ‘Em game.
To go along with the newly resurrected primetime show, ABC.com unveiled a new play at home version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, one of the more ambitious two-screen games yet launched by a broadcast network. Users play along at home online or mobile via a WAP site by answering questions in a timely manner – more points are awarded the faster the responses are given. The top online players will have their username highlighted in the show each night.
CBSNews.com launches its latest webcast this morning, a health and wellness report focusing on women’s health issues hosted by CBS News Correspondent Jennifer Ashton.
New premium movie service Epix is putting together some innovative features for its EpixHD.com site set to launch this fall with the network, per THR. The site includes on demand streaming options; point-of-purchase links with Amazon.com or eBay; DVD-style extras including interviews and behind-the-scenes footage; and social networking integrations with Facebook and Twitter. For instance the Viacom, Lionsgate, MGM joint venture plans to enable private screenings of movies with live chat capabilities.
Rooftop Comedy launches a new interactive show on the cable network MavTV on August 17th, currently carried by Comcast, Verizon, Dish Networks, Time Warner, Brighthouse Networks, Charter Communications and Cablevision. The show revolves around the question “What do you think Sucks?, soliciting text, photo, audio and video submissions from audience members. The UGC will be fed into the web/mobile site suckbox and spliced together with live stand up performances that riff on global “suck trends.”
Broadband set-top maker Roku, which has recently added content from Amazon and blip.tv to its Netflix library, has raised an additional $13.4 million in new funding from Melno Ventures across two rounds of financing, per Contentinope.
Tech-oriented broadband producer Revision3 launched its 17 original show titled AppJudgement – a thrice-weekly look at the hottest mobile applications hosted by a rotating selection of Revision3 personalities including Patrick Norton (Tekzilla) and Ron Richards (iFanboy).

Ad supported web music services may be great concepts, they just aren’t getting much ad support, according to post mortem-themed examination of the sector in CNET. An in depth examination of the now defunct download service SpiralFrog revealed that advertisers were never willing to pay the kind of rates that would sustain such a service.
Magazine, website, and local TV station brand Meredith has introduced a new logo and market positioning to communicate the multiplatform nature of its print, broadcast and digital media properties. Going forward, Meredith will refer to its publishing and related interactive properties as “National Media Brands” and its broadcasting properties as “Local Media Brands” to reflect their ability to serve local consumers and advertisers across various video and digital platforms.
Toshiba, which we recently learned has built a business in China selling devices that borrow heavily from the HD DVD format, announced yesterday that it has decided to join the Blu-ray Disc Association. The company expects to begin rolling out products late this year including Blu-ray players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives.
Dish Network rebounded nicely after cutting the price of its most popular service. Dish added approximately 26,000 net subscribers during the quarter ended June 30, 2009, finishing with some 13.6 million subscribers. Revenue in the period declined 0.4% to $2.9 billion and operating income dropped 57% from $620.7 million in the prior year to $262.8 million.
DirecTV announced plans to launch a “TV Apps” interactive application store containing widgets customers can add to their service for no additional cost, notes ITVT. The interface has been in public beta since June and currently features 14 apps including iTV solutions from Flickr, Twitter, and MLB.

TreeHugger.com, the crunchy, authentic environmental news blog acquired by Discovery as part of its Planet Green initiative, celebrates its 5th anniversary today by announcing a half a dozen new content partners, each with their own area of (complementary) expertise. TreeHugger will now share original content with Boing Boing (“wonderful things”), Care2 (healthy lifestyle), Fast Company (new economy), Infrastructurist (green building), Mother Jones (left leaning politics) and Tonic.com (“positively good” happening) in an effort to improve traffic and increase the readership of original features like this look back at Woodstock. TreeHugger and PlanetGreen.com also have four new original short series in the works that will premiere online before making their airing on Planet Green this fall, including animated series Bea Wildered and Twigsy, interview-driven The Elementalists and urban focused City Shorts. Founder Graham Hill, who took a VP position with Planet Green to run its interactive efforts following the acquisition, says that there’s been a few “cultural differences” folding the site’s operations into the TV culture of Discovery but that the experience has been a positive one. The mission to reach more people has certainly been forwarded; TreeHugger’s traffic has increased by 2 or 3 fold to 3.5 million uniques since joining Discovery.
