In a major shift within the talent representation business, leaders from the 111-year old WMA and the 14-year old Endeavor voted to merge forming WME Entertainment. The new super-sized agency combines the cash assets of WMA through its music, tours and television show legacy deals with the client-rich roster of Endeavor. Leading WME Entertainment will be Jim Wiatt as Chairman (formerly WMA’s CEO), while Endeavor heads Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell and WMA president Dave Wirtschafter will oversee the new entity’s operations. WME Entertainment will also be headed by a nine-person board of directors including five executives from WMA and four from Endeavor. By the end of 2009, WME Entertainment will likely be headquartered in Beverly Hills at a building WMA is in the process of designing. But, possibly in the next few months layoffs are expected within WMA’s ranks as WMA has nearly four times the number of agents than Endeavor.

Programming Note: This Wednesday night, President Obama will cap his 100th day in office with a live one-hour primetime press conference starting at 8p. Most broadcast and cable news networks will cover the press conference live including ABC, CBS, NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Channel, BBC America and presumably CNN tho we were not able to confirm that. FOX, the missing network, is opting to run a new episode of Lie To Me instead, though the network will run an on-screen graphic directing viewers who want to watch the press conference to its sister cable networks, Fox News Channel or Fox Business Network. Previously this year, FOX has had to move American Idol twice because of other President Obama press conferences.

CBS made several changes to its May primetime schedule affecting some season finale dates and times:

  • Starting May 2, Harper’s Island moves to Saturdays at 9p
  • Regular episodes of Rules of Engagement and The New Adventures of Old Christine air May 13 beginning at 8p.
  • On May 14, the season finale of CSI: NY will air at 10p following the season finale of CSI
  • Season finales of The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried are moving to May 20 at 8p and 830p respectively
  • The two-hour season finale of Criminal Minds will now air on May 20 at 9p.

TLC confirmed the fifth season premiere of Jon & Kate Plus 8 from Figure 8 Films on Memorial Day May 25 at 9p followed by the series premiere of Cake Boss produced by High Noon Entertainment at 10p. Additionally on May 29 at 9p, the seventh season of What Not To Wear opens from BBC Worldwide Productions, featuring Mayim Bialik, star of the 1990s series Blossom.

This is a month away, yet be sure and Tivo or watch HISTORY’s eight-part television event Expedition Africa: Stanley & Livingstone beginning May 31 at 10p. Four modern-day explorers travel 970 miles across Africa, reliving American journalist Henry Morton Stanley’s dangerous journey to find the missing Dr. David Livingstone. Mark Burnett Productions produces this fascinating series.

Upfront Presentation Round-Up: All broadcast networks will continue with plans for upfront presentation parties during the week of May 18 in New York City, though all are cutting back on celebrity appearances and the glitz this year. Per THR, a brief idea of what to expect from each network:

  • NBC opens its upfront with several “infront” presentations starting May 4 in New York with a Q&A with Ben Silverman, NBC co-chairman and Mike Pilot, head of sales. 
  • Leading off the big week, FOX will present first on May 18 at New York City Center followed by an after party at Wollman Rink.
  • ABC is moving its upfront presentation to 3p from 4p on May 19 at Lincoln Center with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel in tow. Following their show, ABC will host a cocktail reception and dinner for media buyers.
  • Also on May 19, NBC is hosting a Town Hall following ABC’s presentation, featuring its late-show guys Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon as well as Rainn Wilson and possibly Jerry Seinfeld.
  • CBS will again use Carnegie Hall as its stage on May 20 and will host a quieter post-upfront party this year.
  • The CW is the final presenter on May 21 at Madison Square Garden Theatre with a low-key party at Gramercy Park Hotel afterwards.
  • And add in on Wednesday morning during the broadcast upfront week, Turner Networks at 930am at the Hammerstein Ballroom in midtown.

A new hi-def digital network, Live Well HD Network launched yesterday on 10 ABC O&Os in top markets, penetrating 24% of US homes. The advertiser-supported multi-platform network, developed for emerging digital channels in local markets, also includes online and wireless components and will likely launch in other markets in future months. Programming on Live Well HD Network includes multiple plays of six original 30m series produced by ABC Owned Television Stations and its online and wireless content is accessible 24-hours. The initial series consists of an interior design show, Home with Lisa Q; a healthy cooking show, Let’s Dish; a show focused on beauty and fashion, Mirror/Mirror; a health and medicine show called Say Ahh …; an outdoor activity program, Motion; and one centered on personal growth titled Advice for Life. The ten ABC O&Os launching the network yesterday are: WABC/New York, KABC/Los Angeles, WLS/Chicago, WPVI/Philadelphia, KGO/San Francisco, KTRK/Houston, WTVD/Raleigh-Durham, KFSN/Fresno, WJRT/Flint and WTVG/Toledo.

Fans of the 1980s cop drama Cagney & Lacey take note: MGM Studios Inc. is partnering with TV.com making full episodes from seasons two and three available to TV.com’s online consumers. There are plans to launch other seasons of Cagney & Lacey in the future. In conjunction with this launch, MGM scheduled a publicity tour with series stars Sharon Gless, Tyne Daly and executive producer Barney Rosenzweig who is married to Gless. Cagney & Lacey aired on CBS from 1982 through 1988.

APT Worldwide, the international sales unit of American Public Television, will now represent the international rights for Wolves in Paradise, a wildlife documentary produced by William Campbell, Homefire Productions, KUSM-TV/Montana PBS and The Independent Television Service.


This August, The Style Network introduces viewers to newlywed couple Giuliana and Bill Rancic in the new 30m reality series Giuliana and Bill. Giuliana is currently an anchor for E! News and Bill is a former winner on NBC’s The Apprentice and now a real estate developer in Chicago. The two fell in love following an E! News interview and in 2007, Style featured the couple’s wedding in Italy during the special Marry Me in Capri. Now, viewers will watch the couple juggle demanding careers that separates them much of the time with Bill in Chicago and Giuliana in L.A. Comcast Entertainment Productions produces the series.

MTV will have its own fashion competition series as the network will announce a series order for The Stylist from Bunim-Murray during today’s upfront presentation, reports THR. The show will follow a group of top-drawer fashion stylists as they compete for a contract with a major agency.

Timothy Olyphant landed the lead role in FX’s drama pilot based on the Elmore Leonard short story Fire in the Hole, per THR. The untitled project will begin production in late May, produced by Sony TV and Timberman/Beverly Productions. The series is about US Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) returning to his hometown in Kentucky. Most recently, Olyphant appeared on a season of FX’s Damages.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  One of the longest running patent battles in the tech space has finally come to an end. Qualcomm agreed to pay rival Broadcom $891 million over four years in a settlement of all their legal disputes. The two chip makers have been fighting for 4+ years across three venues over patent issues related to mobile processing and the battle has significantly slowed the evolution of 3G mobile technology.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Several years into their deal Sony Pictures and Aardman Features are moving forward with two Aardman Animations animated feature films, Arthur Christmas and Pirates!, per THR.  A stop-motion animated movie, Pirates! will be co-directed by Aardman co-founder Peter Lord (co-director Chicken Run with Nick Park) with Jeff Newitt.  The movie is based on the book series Pirates! (In an Adventure with Scientists) by author Gideon Defoe, who is also penning the script.  For Arthur Christmas, Aardman is teaming with Sony Pictures Imageworks to produce the CGI animated project that will be c0-directed by Sarah Smith and Barry Cook from a script by Peter Baynham (Borat). Friday – A18-49 Analysis: CBS collected a win Friday night among A18-49 with a 1.8/6 according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research.CBS won with Ghost Whisperer at 8p and a 2.2/8 followed by a tie between ABC’s Wife Swap and UNIV’s Cuidado con el Angel at 1.3/5 each. UNIV came on strong during 9p as Manana es para Siempre did best at 2.0/7 with CBS’ Flashpoint next at 1.6/5. It was ABC’s turn to be #1 through 10p with 20/20 at 2.2/7, while CBS’ ratings added up to a second place score of 1.8/6 for Numb3rs.

Lenny Daniels advanced to the new position of EVP/COO with Turner Sports. Lenny will continue to be based in Atlanta, reporting directly to David Levy, president, Turner Sports and Turner Broadcasting Ad Sales. Former Weather Channel executive Rick Booth joins NESN, New England Sports Network as Director/Creative Services. At NESN, Rick will oversee the on-air broadcast design and visual focus on the network and will also manage the creation and execution of all branding and promotional materials.
Roger Goodman, long-time Director with ABC News is leaving his position as of May 1 to expand his own production company. Roger will continue to be involved with ABC News as a consultant. Throughout his career at ABC News, Roger has directed special events from war coverage, the millennium, the recent election night coverage to past Olympics.
