Miramax found a new approach to cracking down on file sharers: kill them with kindness. The studio, which regularly monitors piracy-themed keywords, offered a free ticket to see Adventureland after a Twitter user tweeted about not being able to find an illegal copy of the movie on torrent sites, per TorrentFreak. (At first they simply asked her nicely not to pirate it and when she agreed they rewarded her for her honesty.)

Lumping gay-themed titles in with unsavory “adult” material, the change supposedly also affected search functionality. Now it turns out that the whole issue was caused by the meddling of a homophobic hacker, who confessed to altering the metadata of all Gay and Lesbian-tagged books on the site.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

What makes the web so interesting as a media platform is the way it can facilitate browsing and discovery in new and unexpected ways. Desktop client and iPhone software maker Cooliris takes a completely visual approach to navigation. Its interface presents videos in a scrolling wall of thumbnail images with a variety of channels to choose from including music, movies and news. Its interface is very intuitive and easy to use – it’s a perfect tool to use when searching the web for both premium content and wacky UGC stuff. Cooliris just launched a new version of its 3D wall over the weekend (available for IE, Firefox and Safari) that broadens the browsing and searching of images and media across the web. In addition to scouring the traditional online sources for videos and photos such as YouTube and Hulu, version 1.10 also searches for content on users’ own hard drives as well as on popular social networking sites. Of course images are only accessible if they’re properly tagged, but do-it-yourself tagging features on platforms such as Facebook and Metacafe are exponentially increasing the breadth and depth of searchable metadata. The Palo Alto, Calif. company also announced a $15 million second round of venture funding from previous investor Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers and others.
