Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, April 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Fox Television Studios and Hearst Magazines will launch 12 new broadband video sites in the coming months, tied to popular Hearst magazine titles. Fox TV Studios will create original short-form content such as a serialized high school soap for cosmogirl.com, the storyline for which will be taken from user emails. How-to webisodes for popularmechanics .com are also in the works. The Fox/Hearst deal calls for a 50/50 ad revenue split and hopes to incubate network TV series from the made-for broadband shows. Maven Networks will provide video management and syndication services. Maven also works with Univision, CSTV, The Weather Channel, 20th Century Fox and A&E Networks.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
CBS SportLine’s Masters.org delivered nearly four million video streams of during the first three days of The Masters golf tournament. The site featured interviews and live coverage from “Amen Corner” (holes 11, 12 and 13) throughout the event, presenting over 45 hours of streaming video.
NBCSports.com introduced two sports/social networking hybrid sites powered by social gaming site Bunchball.com. NHL Trivia Face Off challenges players’ hockey knowledge. NBC Golf Trivia Challenge allows users to submit their own questions, which are then voted on by other players. Golf and NHL matching games were also produced, involving social networking functions to help users connect with fellow fans.
Turner Sports launched a subscription service offering live webcasts of United Soccer League games for $3.99 a match or $9.99 a month. A season pass can be purchased for $49.99, a 60 percent discount, if bought by May 1. Turner Sports also operates PGA.com, NASCAR.com, TNT Overtime, and ACCSelect.com.
Veoh Networks is aggregating daily 90-second webisode of Prom Queen as a weekly episode, available on a dedicated channel promqueen.tv. The show’s producer, Michael Eisner’s Vuguru, is trying to get the series out there by offering it on several sites in a variety of formats. Veoh has also embedded the 80-episode show on Vuguru.com, Ellegirl.com and MySpace, which gets each episode 12 hours before the other sites. Veoh also encourages fans to download the Veoh player to their desktops, which will automatically download each new episode as it becomes available.
Holly, Bridget and Kendra from E!’s The Girls Next Door offer uncensored advice on jealousy and competition on SavvyMiss.com, a site for “intellectually curious & fun-loving” women. The community site features articles on sex, fashion, careers, recipes, etc.
Sony Pictures Television is asking fans of The King of Queens to vote for their favorite episodes. Viewers’ top 5 choices will posted on Yahoo TV the week leading up to the sitcom’s final episode on CBS, to be broadcast May 14. SPT’s 208 affiliates will promote the contest on their websites. Clips from twelve of the most popular episodes will be available on Yahoo TV to jog voters’ memories from April 16.
TV production company Curious Pictures has crossed over with Gamelab into casual gaming with Out of Your Mind, set in a fictional “brain spa” where players test the metal hygiene of the guests. The storyline plays out across several animated cutscenes, which fill out the backstory of the characters. The companies see the downloadable game, currently available for play on PCs but planned for other formats, as possible fodder for a web-based series or broadcast sitcom. Out of Your Mind is aimed at women gamers, who represent the 60-70 percent of the causal game market.
Filmmakers’ social networking community Withoutabox reached an agreement with the Cannes Film Festival to manage registration, management and promotion of the Cannes’ Short Film Corner, a program for short films. Filmmakers and producers can register for the festival directly from the withoutabox site. The forth annual Short Film Festival will take place May 16 to 26th in the Palais des Festivals. The submission deadline is April 15, 2007.
Here! Networks launched a half-hour movie review show “here! At the Movies,” to debut on all here! platforms later this month, including SVOD or as a video podcast available via iTunes, AOL, MSN, Google Video and as a direct subscription from here’s site.
Dutch media company Talpa Content USA is soliciting ideas on its website for unscripted or non-fiction TV shows, to be adapted for Dutch television and possibly developed for international format sales. Talpa is owned by John de Mol, one of the founders of Endemol (Big Brother, Deal or No Deal).
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Apple sold its 100 millionth iPod. Since introducing the mp3 player in November 2001, the company has rolled out more than 10 models and five generations of iPod, two generations of the iPod nano and two generations of the iPod shuffle. The iPod ecosystem has spawned more than 4,000 accessories and the iTunes store has sold more than 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows and over 1.3 million movies.
It’s no wonder the companies keep trying to carve out a piece of this market. SanDisk Corp., Yahoo and Zing Systems Inc. are the latest to try with the Sansa Connect, going on sale Friday. The Sansa will work with Yahoo’s internet music and content service to allow users to download music directly from the net when in range of a Wi-Fi connection. Similar to RealNetwork’s Rhapsody service, Yahoo offers a subscription-based music service that permits unlimited song downloads for $11.99 a month. SanDisk currently has the second largest share of the mp3 player market in the U.S., accounting for 9 percent of player sales, according to the NPD Group (compared to 73.7 percent for Apple.)
Akimbo will release a Windows XP and Windows Vista version of its internet-to TV VOD service on April 16, available for download at Akimbo.com. Akimbo, one of the first IP-based programming services to deliver content to the television, currently offers TV shows and movies from content providers such as National Geographic, CNN and here!, delivered through RCA set-tops. Akimbo also signed a deal with the NHL to offer Stanley Cup playoff games this season within 48 hours after the game is played.
The U.S. plans to file two formal complaints to the WTO today, claiming deficiencies in China’s ability to legally protect against copyright infringement and challenging law enforcement barriers to step up prevention of piracy of books, music, videos and movies. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said the U.S. and China have been unable to agree on legal changes needed for China to comply with its commitments on the issue as a member of the WTO. Hollywood lost an estimated $2.6 billion to piracy in China in 2005, according to the MPAA.
An elaborate fan page for a character the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother planted on MySpace by its producers helped drive the show to its highest ratings of the season among 18-34 year olds, according to The New York Times. Robin Sparkles is the backstory identity of aspiring news anchor Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), who played in a synth-pop band The Sparkles in high school, a revelation another character in the show made when he discovered a streaming video of a Sparkles performance online. The Robin Sparkles MySpace page, which even included a made-up hit single “Let’s Go to the Mall,” attracted 5,000 “friends” in a single day following the on-air tie in and ratings of the show the next week jumped by more than 1 million viewers. Last night’s episode drove viewers back to MySpace and cbs.com for the reenactment of a bachelor party.

In-game video advertising and advertiser-created games (such as Burger King‘s $4 games for the Xbox) is expected to grow at an annual rate of 22.9 percent from 2006 to 2011, according to report by eMarketer. In-game advertising is projected to reach $625 million in 2011 while advergaming is expected to reach $1.94 billion in sales by 2011.
NBCU’s iVillage made several key appointments to Deborah Fine’s leadership team:
- Greg Zegras was promoted to Senior Vice President, Consumer Health. He will oversee iVillage’s consumer health business including the newly launched portal iVillage Total Health.
- Carla Wojnaroski joins as Vice President, Editorial-Consumer Health.
- Betsy Alexander, formerly with NBC’s Today Show, was hired as Vice President-Today Show Integration.
- Juan Lopez-Valcarcel will take the role of Vice President, Strategy.
Millo Antola was hired as Head of Content Distribution for Castalia Communications. He will be charged with developing the distributor’s international division and will report directly to Luis Torres-Bohl, President, Castalia Communications.

It may have used Sex In The City as a jumping-off point, but The 39 Second Single has grown into its own as a very original little weekly web sitcom about dating in New York City. It follows the adventures of 39-year-old Liza as she tries to sidestep the frogs and find her Prince Charming in Big Apple. The series is produced by Liza Persky (star) and Mary Matthews (videographer), who have a wonderful chemistry that makes these little confessionals feel very authentic. The show is more episodic than serialized, but all 19 episodes are archived if you feel like going back. New episodes are posted every Friday.
