Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Thursday, September 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
In the next logical step of the TV Everywhere revolution, Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis announced plans to offer subscribers the option to watch their favorite shows on their mobile phones using the MSO-backed 4G Clearwire WiMax service. While TV has been available for sometime via mobile devices through services such as Flo TV, subscribers have been reluctant to pay extra for the service; Comcast plans to offer mobile TV as a free add on as it is planning to do with the On Demand Online service. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia conference, Angelakis also spoke of expanding Comcast’s On Demand video service to mobile devices, according to Information Week.

Who was it that said there’s no such thing as a free lunch? Rupert Murdoch continued to beat the paid content drum this week, stating that the Wall Street Journal will begin to charge users to access the WSJ iPhone and BlackBerry content apps ($2/month for non-subscribers, $1 for subscribers.) He also told Goldman Sachs Communicopia attendees that the News Corp., NBCU, Walt Disney joint venture Hulu was looking into charging subscriptions to view TV content online.
USA Network is expanding its Character Arcade casual gaming portal, adding to its catalog and improving engagement with the help of some new partners. New games from publishers such as NeoEdge and Bigpoint will help USA nearly double its game roster by the end of the year. Bunchball, which helped NBC build out the fictional Dunder Mifflin Infinity social network around The Office, will provide its SocialLink technology to make it easier for fans to chat and share games across social networks.
Perhaps reacting to the proliferation of cheap iPhone games, Nickelodeon Kids and Family Games Group‘s Shockwave portal announced a new pricing structure, slashing most prices to $6.99 for each title. Shockwave will also continue to offer its premium Shockwave Unlimited subscription service for $5. Shockwave recorded its best month in three years in monthly visitors in August, according to ComScore, drawing 6 million visitors.
Following an ongoing trend among programmers, TVGuide.com completed social integrations with Facebook Connect, allowing Facebook users to register with the site using their Facebook accounts with a single click and view an integrated guide widget from their profile pages. The guide, also available as an iGoogle gadget, features online video including full-length TV episodes, news, cast info. and episode recaps and allows you to keep up with what shows your friends are fans of.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social networking company is already in the black (well, cash-flow positive anyway), a year earlier than it originally planned. The platform now counts over 300 million members after adding another 50 million users in July.

Is the cable industry finally getting serious about interactive advertising? New York-based MSO Cablevision announced it is launching its “Optimum Select” interactive advertising solution across its entire digital subscriber base from early October. The enhancement allows advertisers to query viewers with opt-in requests for coupons, samples or more information directly from their remote. Other operators such as Comcast and Time Warner Cable have been experimenting with interactive ad features in select markets this year, but Cablevision is the first large MSO to commit to the format across its entire footprint.
Google has acquired reCaptcha, one of the technology providers that provides authentication software for websites. (ReCaptcha makes users retype distorted text in order to slip up spam bots or automated click-fraud set-ups.)
The French lower house passed a revised version of a controversial anti-piracy law that allows authorities to disconnect the broadband services of repeat offenders, per Reuters. The so-called “Hadopi” law (from the abbreviation of the French title of a proposed governing body that would oversee such actions,) was amended to state that only a judge has the authority to order actual disconnections.
The CEA has asked the FCC to review its CableCard policies to see whether or not current rules are actually spurring competition among set-tops manufacturers, per Multichannel News.
Another day, another gloomy ad spending report: TNS Media Intelligence released measuring ad spending results across the first half of 2009 and found a 14.3% overall drop to $56.9 billion – that’s 5 consecutive quarters of negative growth. Spot TV declines dragged down TV media spending, which fell by 10% Jan.-June; Magazine advertising fell by 20.9%; Newspaper media spending dropped by 24.2%; and Radio ad spending fell by 24.6%. Internet display ads and free-standing inserts were the only sectors that showed positive growth – up 6.5% and 4.6% respectively. The industry was hit by broad cutbacks by traditional heavy spenders including GM, (-26%), P&G (-20%), Walt Disney (-11.7%) and Time Warner (-11.1%).

E! will unveil a new widget on Eonline and the Television Academy’s new Emmys.com fan site tomorrow, integrating both Facebook and Twitter into a single interface. The widget offers a live chat environment that displays both Facebook updates and tweets from users, celebrities and nominees leading up to and during the Emmy red carpet and telecast. E! is also unveiling its new “Glam Cam 360” on Eonline and Emmys.com as part of its Emmy Coverage on Sunday. Sort of like those real estate virtual tour tools, the camera captures video of celebrity wardrobes from top to bottom and front to back in a seamless 360 degree motion.
This is one album the iPhone doesn’t have an app for. Research In Motion unveiled the rumored Blackberry U2 app, a new interactive interface exclusive to the platform. The free app delivers a range of content including photos, videos, interviews, news, lyrics and samples of the U2’s music, including individual tracks or the complete “No Line On The Horizon” album, which can be purchased online directly from a BlackBerry smartphone.
Meanwhile Britney Spears and Pink became the latest artists to release interactive singles in the next-generation, re-mixable MXP4 format.
Karma Media Labs has named Lori Dicker as CEO, and JP Clement as COO, effective immediately. Both were formerly with Fanscape, as VP, Interactive Media and VP, Strategy and Analytics, respectively, before co-founding and launching Karma Media Labs in 2008.
Calton Chan was hired to lead ad serving technology firm Rocket Fuel‘s Eastern Sales team in the agency’s New York office as VP of Sales. Most recently, Calton served as VP/Sales at behavioral online ad network interCLICK.
Leading social app maker RockYou reported positive results for its “Dawn Saves Wildlife” Facebook campaign, initiated by MediaVest NY to promote the dish soap and raise awareness for environmental causes. RockYou created a customized campaign using its Pieces of Flair self expression app, allowing users to share a Dawn-branded Flair button of oil-covered animals that are cleansed with Dawn dishwashing liquid. (Simplistic, but cute.) In less than three weeks, more than 1.3 million pieces were shared and more than 500,000 Pieces of Flair were posted to profile pages. Nearly 1 million people in the brand’s target demo were reached through the app, according to RockYou. And Dawn is giving away $1 for each bottle purchased and activated at dawnsaveswildlife.com (up to $500k). So far nearly $80k has been raised. Social programs like this one may seem more real to potential Dawn customers because they’re more viscerally involved in the message.
