Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/08/09

Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

FCC chairman Julius Genachowski laid out a plan to reclaim additional spectrum for advanced mobile broadband applications and remove obstacles preventing the build out of advanced 4G networks at a keynote address at the CTIA conference yesterday. With smartphone penetration accelerating at breakneck speeds, the challenge will be to make the transition in a timely manner, he said. “It takes years to reallocate spectrum and put it to use. And there are no easy pickings on the spectrum chart. But we have no choice. We must identify spectrum that can best be reinvested in mobile broadband.” He also reiterated support for codifying net neutrality issues and transparency among providers, to insure informed consumers and an “open internet.”

The Xbox Live Arcade got new addition yesterday from the crass minds at South Park Digital Studios. The downloadable “South Park Let’s Go Tower Defense Game” allows up to 4 players to build turrets to fend off waves of hippies, zombies, demons and old people. It goes for 800 Microsoft Points (roughly $10).

Lifestyle network Fuel TV also launched a new game on its website around its Built to Shred skating show. As an incentive, Fuel will award the game’s Top 10 scorers each week with prizes including skate decks, T-shirts and other goodies.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The worst seems to be behind the internet ad giants. First Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz promised that there would be no more job cuts at her company. Now, in a New York City press conference yesterday covered by All Things D, Google CEO Eric Schmidt is said that Google is once again hiring and expanding again. The company also is planning to make some acquisitions, but is only looking at smaller firms at this time.

In cinema advertising company Screenvision announced a new long-term deal with Malco Theatres, increasing the company’s distributed screen count to 15,366, including over 7,700  digital screens.

Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers have been given about a month to amend their $125 million settlement over the digital copying of copyrighted books. At a status hearing on Wednesday, Judge Denny Chin told the parties they have until Nov. 9 to submit a revised agreement, after it was rejected in its current form by the U.S. Department of Justice and several consumer groups.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

One reason for the success of Apple’s App Store may be competitive pricing. The average price for apps on BlackBerry App World is more than three times higher than apps on Apple’s App Store, according to Distimo‘s Sept. mobile app report. Prices on Google’s Android Market also tend to trend lower. Cheap apps prove to be the most popular, however most of the revenue tends to be generated by apps priced at $50 or above in categories such as navigation and productivity.

AT&T

Amazon cut the price of the latest Kindle e-reader by $40 to $259 and introduced an international version of the device, complete with an overseas-compatible wireless service. The International Kindle will be hit the market on Oct. 19 for the same price as the U.S. version, and will be available in over 100 countries. The Kindle Store now offers more than 350,000 books, over 50 U.S. and international newspapers and over 35 magazines. International readers will have less titles to choose from at first – more like 200,000 e-books.

MLB.com, Turner Sports and Fox Sports took the field yesterday with Postseason.tv, a new interactive broadband viewing app available from MLB.com, FoxSports.com or MLB.com/TBSHotCorner that allows viewers to watch baseball playoff games from 4 of 10 different stationary angles. (Too bad they didn’t offer this for the one game Tigers/Twins runoff – there may have been an angle that showed Casilla being safe at home in the 10th.) It also offers in-game highlights, real time stats and a chance to trash talk using an integrated Twitter feed. The service, which costs $9.95 for the duration of the postseason, is also available for existing iPhone At Bat 2009 subscribers for no extra charge. MLB Advanced Media has led the industry in perfecting and monetizing live streaming, and they’ve hit it out of the park again with this comprehensive interface. MLB Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman has always been of the mind that you put out the best product you can and charge what you think its worth, even back when few had a good enough connection to take advantage of the technology. This could be a lesson that other premium online media giants may want to emulate going forward, if it’s not too late already.

Correction : A conscientious reader pointed out that Eric Schmidt no longer sits on the Apple board of directors. Under pressure from regulators, it’s true that the Google CEO decided to excuses himself from the board a few week ago, (although Mr. Schmidt continues to defend the right of former Genentech CEO Arthur Levinson to sit on both the Google and the Apple boards.)
