Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/23/08

Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 23, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

In an effort to compete with fiber-to-the-home plays such as Verizon’s FiOS service, Comcast announced plans to speed up deployment of its super high-speed broadband services to more than 10 million homes by the end of the year. Comcast’s DOCSIS 3.0 “wideband” service, which has been tested in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region for the past few months, will soon be available in Boston, Southern New Hampshire, Philadelphia and New Jersey – offering speeds of up to 50 megabits per second down and 10 Mbps upstream (for a handsome $140/month). The more reasonably priced Ultra service will cost $62.95 for 22 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.

CBS Interactive debuted a new original scripted web series from creator Jonathan Prince (A&E’s The Cleaner), who has a first look deal with CBS Paramount Network Television. The 8-webisode Novel Adventures revolves around a woman’s book club in LA, who use the books they read to inspire them to tackle real adventures. The series was shot in HD and stars a seasoned cast. It will be distributed for an exclusive 48-hour window on CBS.com, TheInsider.com and TV.com before becoming available on iTunes and the CBS Audience Network. Saturn is sponsoring.

Digital distribution company Myvideorights.com has signed an exclusive deal with The Onion News Network to distribute its satirical video content across the UK, Europe and Asia during the lead up to the US Presidential election and beyond. The deal is meant to capitalize on unprecedented interest foreign audiences have shown in coverage of U.S. politics, particularly that which “takes the piss” out of its subjects.

Popular BBC car show Top Gear, which dates back 30 years in the UK, launched a portal for North America featuring video clips, localized content and social networking options for American and Canadian car fanatics.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Russia-based visual search solution provider Quintura was awarded its first U.S. patent this week to offer web publishers free semantic and context-based search services using maps and images rather than text. The search engine deploys an interactive display cloud that helps visitors to sites such as Maxim.com find relevant search results. Quintura, which recently received funding from Mangrove Capital Partners, also provides analytic tools including search term rankings, trends, and analyses to help publishers quantify results.

United Talent Agency’s new media studio 60Frames introduced a separate production label dubbed Red Band Industries to develop and produce edgier fare that may scare off mainstream advertisers, reports Mediaweek.

Web 2.0 TV network ManiaTV, producer of Dave Navarros Spread TV, has laid off about 30% of its employees and will reduce the number of shows it produces per TVWeek. The web studio instead will rely on third-party producers to fill out its line up.

Influential online social music portal imeem has put itself up for sale hiring investment bank Montgomery & Co. to manage the proceedings, per paidcontent.org. Imeem has struck on demand streaming deals with all 4 major labels and has pushed out its service to several third party outlets but has since seen the launch of music themed services by larger rivals such as MySpace Music.

Mommy-themed social networking site CafeMom.com launched a new interactive editorial division covering 9 categories of interest to its 1 million + readers. The daily buzz section covers areas such as entertainment, lifestyle, healthy living, pregnancy and home and garden.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

AT&T
posted a 5.5% rise in profit on net income of $3.23 billion but the company missed its projected earnings for Q3 due to expensive subsidies paid out to Apple. AT&T activated a total of 2.4 million iPhones, contributing to a net gain of 1.7 million new subscribers. The company also added 148,000 high-speed internet customers and 232,000 U-Verse IPTV customers, up from 170,000 added during Q2.

Yahoo reported Revenues of $1.78 billion for Q3 of 2008, up 1% compared to last year. Investors were encouraged by the company’s plan to implement several cost cutting measures (including laying off 10% of its workforce), sending Yahoo’s share price higher despite another down day on Wall Street.

Amazon
announced better than expected sales of $4.26 billion for Q3, touting improved selection, free shipping programs and the growth of titles for the Kindle, which now has over 185,000 book titles available including 105 out of 112 New York Times bestsellers.

Mobile media technology provider Azuki Systems added to its Azuki MashMedia Platform with an in-video advertising system enabling contextual video ads to be placed within short form content. Azuki’s ClickZoom technology enables publishers to segment web content into short “snackable” offerings and users to navigate video by interest. The platform provides a broad inventory of contextual pre and post rolls as well as interactive ads for additional viral distribution.

Nickelodeon’s Tanya Van Court, who has led the company’s preschool and parents online businesses, will now expand her position as SVP & GM of NOGGIN, ParentsConnect and Nick Jr.com. The announcement was made by Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group COO Sarah Kirshbaum Levy and EVP/Digital Media Steve Youngwood, to whom Tanya will report for TV and digital, respectively.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Happy belated birthday to IMDb.com – which celebrated its 18th birthday last Friday. (If mercurial internet years can be equated to dog years, that’s 126!) The site has long been a bible for actors, directors, critics and cinephiles, compiling the most complete, up-to-date credits listing available anywhere. It actually predates the first graphical web browser, if you can believe it. It was started by founder Col Needham (who is still Managing Director of the site) in 1990 as a searchable USENET group of 23,000 entries, accessible by typing in Unix commands. In some ways its history mirrors that of the internet content explosion. For instance, the database modernized its search and submittal interfaces as better technologies became available. But IMDb has always had a strong egalitarian bent. The site remained strictly non-commercial until the relatively late date of 1995, when it finally decided to incorporate and take on ads. As the database grew, corporate types courted the company to no avail, until Amazon’s Jeff Bezos was able to convince the founders he wouldn’t mess with its mission. Since then there have been several redesigns and lots of editorial content added (such as the News Desk.) But its spare look remains unchanged. Today IMDb boasts about 57 million monthly uniques who access the database over 2 billion times a month. It also now doubles as a movie and full episode TV portal, which serves as a defacto recommendation engine for Amazon’s VOD business. But IMDb remains essential to the entertainment business as a place to find out who worked on what for whom. Before it struggling actors like Erik Weiner had nothing but head shots, CVs and demo reels to rely on.

Correction : Yesterday’s item about the Sarah Palin casual game on TabloidGames.com was wrongly attributed to GSN. While the cable network has it’s own thriving selection of free and cash games, it is not affiliated with the TabloidGames site. We regret the error.
