Good morning.  It’s Thursday, May 15, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Fox‘s Upfront presentation is scheduled for this afternoon and expected among those announcements are the pickups for next season of American Idol, House, ‘Til Death, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Moment of Truth, Hell’s Kitchen and Bones.  Among the leave behinds are Back to You, New Amsterdam, Return of Jezebel James and Nashville. And among the new series pickups are Fringe from JJ Abrams and The Inn; and debuting later on in the season are Cleveland, Sit Down and Shut Up and sci fi series Dollhouse.  Complete and confirmed details here tomorrow.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) made a pact with BermanBraun and Thom Beers’ Original Productions to purchase several international television, home entertainment and format rights to four new shows on NBC’s 2008-2009 lineup: America’s Toughest Jobs, Swords and Shark Taggers plus a fourth series to be named later. Specifically, FME acquired international television rights that include Canada and home entertainment rights in Australia and the U.K. to the three series. FremantleMedia Productions also gained international format rights, including Canada, to America’s Toughest Jobs.

Logo ordered a new competition reality series featuring drag queen, RuPaul that searches for the next drag queen superstar. With six one-hour episodes RuPaul’s Drag Race is slated to launch on the digital cable channel early next year. Viewers will largely choose the winner and right now can help select one of the competitors through the show’s official website at http://rupaulsdragrace.logoonline.com/.

A&E will take another run with Dog the Bounty Hunter, with repeats of old episodes hitting the schedule on June 25th, while going into production for a 5th season of new episodes.

Lifetime Networks made a deal with Cox Communications for the launch of Lifetime Television HD, Lifetime Movie Network HD, Lifetime On Demand and Lifetime Movie Network Espanol On Demand. The first channel to be offered to Cox customers this June will be Lifetime HD.

Circle May 25 as the evening to watch the Science Channel’s coverage of Mars Live: The Phoenix Lands starting at 7p. The live event will broadcast from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. Viewers will have the chance to see some of the first photos of the Mars surface along with analysis from top NASA officials.

CBS New Drama Series Descriptions:

  • The Mentalist – plot surrounds Patrick Jane, an unorthodox detective and consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation who uses his acute sense of observation to solve crimes. Simon Baker stars as Det. Jane. Warner Bros. Television produces.
  • Eleventh Hour – Dr. Jacob Hood, a biophysicist and science advisor to the government played by Rufus Sewell, is called at the eleventh hour to investigate scientific anomalies and is passionate about protecting science from those who would exploit and misuse it. Based on a British miniseries and executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. From Jerry Bruckheimer Television in association with Warner Bros. Television.
  • The Ex List – a dramedy about Bella Bloom, a single woman in her 30s, who learns from a psychic that she’s already dated her soul mate and she must find him within a year or be alone forever. Elizabeth Reaser stars in this series produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television.

TNT Programming and Development:

  • TNT announced it will offer original primetime programming three nights a week on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays by 2010.
  • Returning series: The Closer and Saving Grace and both will premiere with new episodes this July.

New scripted drams in development:

  • Delta Blues (wt) – a Memphis cop is also an Elvis impersonator living with his mother. From Warner Horizon Television and SmokeHouse with George Clooney as executive producer.
  • Morse Code (wt) – about a young war hero and DEA officer based in Boston. Donnie Wahlberg is likely to star in this drama from Warner Horizon Television.
  • Untitled Joes Surnow Project – focuses on an agent who works at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
  • Angel City (wt) – six patrol cops working during the same shift. From Mandalay Television.
  • Tough Trade – dramedy about the Nashville music business and centering on a family of country music performers. Produced by Lionsgate Television.
  • Untitled Rob Ulin Project – family drama compared to the film Little Miss Sunshine.

TNT new series for the 2008-2009 season:

  • Raising the Bar – the new legal drama from Steven Bochco starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Gloria Reuben and Jane Kaczmarek. Produced by ABC Studios.
  • Leverage – action drama with Timothy Hutton in the lead from Electric Entertainment.
  • Truth in Advertising – Eric McCormack and Tom Cavanagh star in this drama from Warner Horizon Television.

truTV programming  and development plans:

  • Principal’s Office (wt) – takes a look at the job of a school administrator. From Leftfield Pictures.
  • Black Gold – follows the oil drilling industry starting with its premiere on June 18.
  • Ski Patrol – viewers are introduced to the men and women who work in some extreme environments. Episodes will be split between the production companies Bunim/Murray Productions and Varuna Entertainment.
  • Man vs. Cartoon – a group of scientists, engineers and inventors test cartoon inventions to see if they would work in real life. From Warner Horizon Television.

UPFRONT UPDATE: UNIVISION

Yesterday Univision presented their upfront show at Lincoln Center. New to the primetime lineup:

  • Telenovelas from Televisa including Las Tontas No Van al Cielo (Dumb Girls Don’t Go to Heaven) about how love makes one do silly things; Tormenta en el Paraiso (Storm over Paradise) a couple fights to break an ancient Mayan curse; Querida Enemiga (My Dearest Enemy) young lovers are betrayed in this storyline; and Alma de Hierro (Soul of Steel) an unorthodox family must learn to live together.
  • Two new one-hour series La Rosa de Guadalupe (The Rose of Guadalupe) and Central de Abasto (Farmer’s Market) produced by Televisa.
  • Sabado Giante the network’s Saturday night variety/game show will be revamped with a newer, modern look and renamed El Nuevo Sabado Gigante (The New Giant Saturday).
  • Two new reality programs will join the schedule: Viva el Sueno! (Live the Dream), a singing competition show; and El Juego Supremo (The Ultimate Match), soccer stars from Mexico, U.S. and Latin America tutor two amateur soccer players.

Mark Burnett will be a producer for the third season of Toughest Cowboy, according to Variety. The rodeo competition series, operated by Grit Rock Rodeo owned by AEG and Jac Sperling, tours the country over a three month period and airs on Fox Sports Net. There is speculation about whether the series will remain on Fox Sports Net for this third season and discussions are currently in progress.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
: In a true marriage of new and old media, CBS has struck a partnership with viral web drama studio EQAL to create a slate of multiplatform programming for existing and future CBS television productions. The creators of lonelygirl15 and KateModern – Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried – will consult with CBS to help create social experiences around traditional shows, working with CBS writers at the script level to tie online narratives in directly with TV plot lines.  The deal also gives CBS “first look” at any new multiplatform show concepts developed by the studio.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYHasbro, Inc. takes back all worldwide distribution rights to the Sunbow Library of Hasbro Classics programming from TV-Loonland for US$7 million.  TV-Loonland had acquired The Hasbro Classics library, which includes brands such as Transformers, My Little Pony and G.I. Joe, and properties like Mr. Potato Head and Connect Four, from Sony BMG in December 2000. Under the agreement Hasbro takes control of about 2,000 episodes, which covers 30 different brands.  Simon Flamank, CEO, TV-Loonland, explains the company plans to use the funds to pay back a majority of all of its outstanding debt and move the company forward.  TV-Loonland is also in the midst of selling its UK distribution subsidiary Metrodome to its shareholders. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 launched a new fully-owned production company titled Red Seven Entertainment to develop light entertainment content for the group for channels in Germany and throughout Europe as well as other platforms. ProSieben’s current Head/Entertainment Jobst Benthues will be in charge of the new entity, which will be based out of a Munich suburb as part of ProSieben’s Group Content Acquisitions and Productions Division under EVP Jan Frouman.  He will take on additional duties managing acquisition, production, distribution and format development. Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX claimed the #1 spot Tuesday night with 7.1/19 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Jodi Morelli joined SES AMERICOM as Marketing Director of the company’s Media and Enterprise Services. Jodi will manage the marketing activities for the department which also encompasses HD Prime Neighborhood and SES AMERICOM’s Business Network. She will report to Bryan McGuirk, President/Media and Enterprise Services.

TV One appointed Michelle Rice as EVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing to supervise the network’s distribution strategy and operations as well as sales, marketing and local ad sales. Michelle, who joined TV One in January 2004, most recently held the position of SVP/Distribution and Strategy.

TNS added Pamela Godfrey as SVP/Media and Entertainment within the Technology, Media and Telecom Group. Pamela will lead the growth of the Media and Entertainment unit in the Movie, Broadcast and Publishing divisions and all New Media delivery systems. Pamela joined TNS from Warner Home Video where she held the position as VP/Worldwide Publicity and International Promotions.

Lifetime Television tapped former MTV reality executive David Gross as VP/Reality Programming where he will be a member of the network’s unscripted programming team and will work on development of reality projects. Located in Los Angeles, David will report to Jessica Samet, SVP/Reality Programming.

Marina Anglim advanced to SVP/Media Planning and Partnerships with Discovery Communications. Marina is charged with developing and executing media plans for the 14 domestic TV networks, various digital media properties and the e-commerce unit in the U.S. She reports to Wonya Lucas, CMO.

This day in History: 1940 – Nylon stockings were sold in U.S. stores for the first time. They were such a success that 64 million pairs were sold the first year. This buying frenzy was curtailed when the Allied forces began to buy most of the available nylon to make parachutes and tents during World War II.
