01.15.09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
At 8p on all major news outlets:  President Bush’s Farewell Address
A&E Network: The Beast at 10p
Discovery Channel: Treasure Quest at 10p
VH1: Celebrity Rehab Presents Sober House at 10p

Two major loses in the film and television industry …

Patrick McGoohan, 80, star of the 1967 The Prisoner series died Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital following a brief illness. Best known for his role as Number Six in the iconic British series The Prisoner, McGoohan not only played the lead but developed the concept and wrote and directed several episodes. The Prisoner ran for just one season with 17 episodes and later this year AMC will remake a miniseries based on the cult classic. During his career, McGoohan won two Emmy Awards, 16 years apart, guest starring in two episodes of Columbo in 1974 and 1990. He also made several memorable appearances in movies such as the warden in the 1979 film Escape From Alcatraz, King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Braveheart and as the judge in the 1996 drama A Time to Kill. McGoohan is survived by his wife, three daughters and five grandchildren.

Ricardo Montalban, 88, died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. The Mexico City-native starred in big MGM musicals in the 1950s and later in the 1970s/80s became well-known as the enigmatic and mysterious Mr. Roarke in the Aaron Spelling television series Fantasy Island on ABC. He also became a cultural icon for his TV ads promoting the Chrysler Cordoba where he described the car’s “soft Corinthian leather.” Montalban’s prolific career included stints on Broadway, numerous films including many MGM musicals and an Emmy Award in 1978 for his role in How the West Was Won. Following Fantasy Island, he had a regular role on TV’s The Colbys from 1985 to 1987 and had a memorable role in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Since 1993, Montalban was mostly confined to a wheelchair following a spinal operation in 1993, however, he still worked lending his voice for animated films and TV shows. Montalban’s wife, Georgiana Young, preceded him in death in 2003. They had two daughters and two sons.

New York State Supreme Court Judge Richard Lowe threw a pass to both the Dish Network and the NFL Network, per Multichannel News. Judge Lowe did not order Dish Network to place NFL Network back on a more widely distributed channel tier. On the other hand, Judge Lowe also stated the action sparking Dish to move NFL Network’s simulcast of the New England Patriot/New York Giants game in December 2007 also “did not trigger the specific contract provisions allowing EchoStar to drop the NFL to a lower level of service last February.” NFL Network President Steve Bornstein said, “This is an important ruling for us.” Judge Lowe’s decision will likely be unsealed Thursday and a trial on the case has been scheduled for June. NFL Network filed a suit against Dish Network about a year ago after the satellite company moved NFL Network to the America’s Top 200 tier leading to the network losing approximately 4 million subscribers.

Fox International Channels (FIC) announced the first-ever global debut of the drama series The Listener during the first week of March. FIC will open the 13-episode series produced by Shaftesbury Films on all Fox entertainment channels in 180 countries worldwide including the U.K., Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Poland, Brazil and Turkey. FIC’s premiere of The Listener precedes that of NBC in the U.S. and on CTV, Canada later this year.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Following up on the many PC-to-TV integrations unveiled by Netflix, Blockbuster announced a new partnership with Sonic Solutions to enable Blockbuster online renters to port videos to a multitude of media players and portable devices such as PCs, mobile handsets, broadband-connected televisions and Blu-ray disc players. Sonic, the maker of Roxio MP3 players that recently acquired CinemaNow, should help streamline the backend work needed to reach a broad footprint of devices that, in turn, will be promoted and sold through Blockbuster’s 7,500 retail outlets. The next step, of course, will be to convince studios to license more of their titles for digital distribution. Netflix currently offers about 12,000 titles while Blockbuster.com offers about 10,000 – compared to over 90,000 hard copy DVDs.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
