Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) inks a deal with Platinum Studios, Inc., which controls an international library of 5,600 comic book characters, to develop an animated feature film.  No word yet on what the movie will be or what characters will be featured.  Sony and Platinum previously teamed on Men In Black.  Platinum Studios’ film and TV division is currently developing other properties at film studios, including Atlantis Rising at DreamWorks with Kurtzman/Orci (Transformers) set to produce, Cowboys and Aliens also at DreamWorks with Kurtzman/Orci partnering with Universal and Imagine Entertainment, and Unique at Disney Pictures and Dead of Night with Hyde Park Entertainment with Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) starring and Kevin Munroe (2007’s TMNT) directing. Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Motion Pictures and Platinum Studios are currently co-developing feature films based on the soon-to-be-published action thriller graphic novel Final Orbit and Top Cow’s Magdalena.  SPA’s upcoming projects include, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania and The Smurfs.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will host the primetime premiere of the preschool-aimed half-hour special The Wonder Pets! Join The Circus! on Monday, March 9 at 8p.  The following week, Nick Jr. will debut five new episodes of The Wonder Pets!, March 16-20 at 10a.  The new episodes feature guest voiceovers including Anne Meara, Jerry Stiller and Ben Vereen.  To support the special, a DVD of the special will be available from February 24 from Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.  Additionally, Nick Jr. will roll out content from Join The Circus on its various platforms: beginning March 2 on Nick Jr. Video will stream a two-minute sneak peek and song clips along with additional themed episodes of The WonderPets, with the full episodes available following its TV debut; similarly wireless carriers will offer the two-minute peek, song and episode clips from the special from March 2; Join The Circus will be simulcast on Nickelodeon mobile on March 9.

Decode Enterprises signs deals with the Disney Channel in Southeast Asia and Latin America for new puppet series, Mighty Jungle (46×11).  Disney Channel Southeast Asia acquires both seasons for Playhouse Disney, while Disney Channel Latin America picks up the first season.  Produced by Halifax Film, Mighty Jungle is commissioned by CBC in Canada.

Lucasfilm Animation‘s animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars is set to premiere on 23 different Cartoon Network feeds in 19 languages this month including Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.  From February 13, Star Wars: The Clone Wars bows across Asia-Pacific including Australia, India, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Southeast Asia (Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore) and Taiwan.  The series, which debuted on Cartoon Network US in October 2008, is set to make its debut on TNT on February 14, at 11p.

Alloy Media and Marketing acquires Takkle.com, an online and college recruitment website for high school sports.  Takkle.com immediately joins TEEN.com Network, Alloy’s teen-centric distributed media content and advertising network and community.  Alloy also recently acquired the teen girl-targeted community gURL.com, adding to its other youth-aimed web properties such as Alloy.com and ChannelOne.com.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games are teaming up with The LEGO Group to release the video game LEGO Battles for Nintendo DS this summer 2009.  Produced by TT Games, developed by Hellbent Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, LEGO Battle features play scenarios from LEGO’s Castle, Pirates and Space themes.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) enters into a deal with Disguise for Halloween costumes based on Bakugan.  Launching at retail this fall, the line will include classic style costumes based on popular characters from the series in a range of kids sizes.  CNE is the exclusive US licensing agent for Bakugan.  Bakugan is a co-production from Sega Toys, Spin Master, Nelvana Enterprises, TMS Entertainment, Japan Vistec Inc. and Sega Corporation, with animation by Japan Vistec and TMS Entertainment.  The animated TV series airs on Cartoon Network Monday through Friday from 8a

The 21st birthday celebration for Where’s Waldo? continues as Entertainment Rights inks a further consumer products partners to join the search.  This spring, industry leaders Briefly Stated and Giant Merchandising will roll-out Waldo-themed apparel for young men and juniors, while Waldo expands into new categories including from Patch Products (family games), SmileMakers (health-specific stationery), Sellers Publishing (calendars), and Multipet International (pet products).  These companies join other partners such as Local Celebrity (knit tops), BioWorld (accessories), Elope (adult and kids costumes), and USAOPOLY (puzzles).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

THQ Inc. appoints Paul J. Pucino as EVP and CFO.  Pucino replaces Colin Slade who remains on an indefinite medical leave of absence.  Most recently, Pucino was EVP and CFO, Classmates Media Corporation, a subsidiary of United Online.  Previously he was CFO, Digital Insight (which merged with Intuit in 2007), and prior to that Pucino served as EVP and CFO of Tekelec.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of Ni Hao, Kai-Lan Chinese New Year Special, Ladybug Festival, on Monday, February 2 at 8p was watched by 2.2 million total viewers P2+.  The primetime special was and was the most watched show of the night with K2-5 551,000 and K2-11 1.2 million. On the online side, Nickjr.com’s Ladybug Festival video content generated upwards of 2.1 million streams since launching on January 28, per Omniture SiteCatalyst V. 13.5.  The Ni Hao Chinese New Year game, HoHo’s Chinese New Year Coin Catch, generated 2.5 million game plays since its launch on Nick.com January 1.
