Cynopsis: Kids!

02/26/09

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 26, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Warner Bros. unveiled the official release date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two is July 15, 2011.  Warner Bros. is splitting Deathly Hallows, the final book (784 pages) in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, into two movies thus expanding the movie franchise.  As previously announced, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One releases November 19, 2010.

Negotiations are under way for Michel Gondry to direct Columbia PicturesThe Green Hornet.  Staring Seth Rogen as the crime fighting hero, and writer/director/actor/producer Stephen Chow as his sidekick/valet Kato, the movie features a screenplay by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who both also serve as executive producers with Michael Grillo.  Neal H. Moritz will produce the film through his Original Film production company.  You may recall that Chow was originally set to direct as well as star in the movie, but creative differences resulted in him stepping down from the helm.  The Green Hornet will begin shooting this summer and is set for release June 25, 2010.

Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury in a number of Marvel Studios movies, per THR.  Jackson and Marvel have inked a nine-picture deal that could see the actor playing Nick Fury in Marvel’s upcoming movies including Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers, and subsequent sequels.  The report also notes that Jackson could also star in a S.H.I. E.L.D. movie, currently in development, which is the agency that Nick Fury works for.  Jackson, as Fury, appeared at the very tail end of Iron Man.

In other Warner Bros. news, the studio buys the movie rights to The Lonely Dog, a limited-edition book of dog paintings created by New Zealand artist Ivan Clarke, per Variety.  Warner Bros. plans to adapt the book as CG animated feature, which will be produced by Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster under Goldsman’s Weed Road banner.  There are only 90 copies of the original oversized book of paintings that have sold for as much as $6,000 ( www.ivanclarkegallery.com/lonely_dog.html ).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Taffy Entertainment signs a worldwide distribution deal (excluding Australia, New Zealand, China and parts of Southeast Asia) with SLR Productions for the animated comedy series Gasp (52×11), based on the popular comic book series.  Taffy has secured its initial broadcast deal for Gasp with Canal+ (France).  Gasp is based on the comic book series by Australian author/illustrator Terry Denton.  The series follows the adventures and relationships of a goldfish named Gasp, and what happens when pets are home alone.  Currently in production, Gasp will begin delivering this June and is set to launch on air in spring 2010.  The series is produced by SLR Productions, in association with Screen Australia, Network Nine Australia, ABCKids, Agogo and Taffy Entertainment,

Fifi and the Flowertots heads to Russia as Chapman Entertainment and Kidz Entertainment/EEMC, a Nordic and Eastern European licensing agency, sign broadcast and licensing pacts in the market.  Fifi and the Flowertots has been acquired by Channel Russia, which will air the series twice a week as part of its Good Nigh Kids show.  Additionally, C-Toys signs on as a toy partner for the property and Rosman, a Russian kid’s publisher, takes the rights for licensed books and activity publishing.  Chapman and Kidz will announce further licensing partners for the region, in categories including magazines, puzzles, games and confectionery, in the near future.

Italy’s Cartoon One signs more deals for the K6-9 targeted animated series School For Vampires.  A co-production between Hahn Film (Germany) and Cartoon One, School For Vampires is picked up by NRK (Norway), SVTZ (Sweden), MTV3 (Finland), and RTP (Portugal).  Now in its third season, the show continues to air on RAI Due (Italy), KI.KA/ARD (Germany) and Canal Plus (France).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Sega Europe, Sega of America and Spain’s Pyro Studios are teaming up to create a new video game based on the upcoming CG animated movie, Planet 51.  A mission-based driving game, the Planet 51 game is slated for release in winter 2009 for Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS.  Featuring a screenplay by Joe Stillman (Shrek, Shrek 2), Planet 51, the movie,  is scheduled for theatrical release in the US on November 20, 2009 by Sony Pictures Releasing, and around the world by indie distributors.

Ubisoft acquires the publishing rights for Six Flags Fun Park from former publisher Brash Entertainment, the latter of which shuttered in fall 2008.  Ubisoft will release the Six Flags Fun Park game, which includes 40 mini-games and rides, for the Wii in North America on March 10, 2009.

Her Interactive unveiled plans to releases the 20th installment in its Nancy Drew PC game series, Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships, in July 2009.  As in the previous Nancy Drew games, players help Nancy solve mysteries, and this new one takes Nancy and her pals to the Bahamas.  The game is rated E for Everyone.

Nintendo and Mathcounts a nonprofit that promotes math education, are partnering to challenge middle school math clubs nationwide to increase their membership.  Between now and March 25, those clubs boosting their membership have the chance earn Nintendo DS systems and copies of Nintendo’s new Personal Trainer: Math software.
