Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 15, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
AD SALES UPFRONT NEWS – CARTOON NETWORK
After several tumultuous weeks following the misbegotten guerrilla marketing campaign for Cartoon Network’s animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which is part of its late night Adult Swim programming block, yesterday’s snow/icy rain and cold in New York City mixed with the network’s annual kids upfront presentation was likely a respite for team. Leading the network’s ad sales upfront presentation for the 2007 TV season was Mark Lazarus, President, Turner Entertainment Group, a role that fell to him last week after the fallout of the Adult Swim marketing troubles claimed the job of Jim Samples Cartoon Network’s EVP and GM. All of that aside, the business of the kid side of the network will see the launch of five new original series, a new after school programming block, a new mobile tech project featuring animated characters, the launch of the previously announced Massively Multi-Player Game among other plans as well as a newly ordered second season of the series Class of 3000.
New Series:
- Santo (working title) is an action-adventure series set in Mexico City, which features comic-book style heroes/villains and based on the legend of the real-life Mexican luchadores (wrestling hero), Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata (the silver masked man), and his adventures in and out of the ring. Santo is created and executive produced by Carlo Olivares Pagnoni. Working on the series with Pagnoni is Santo’s son, also a wrestler, El Hijo del Santo.
- Chowder revolves around the misadventures of a young chef’s apprentice as he tries to avoid eating everything in sight and one disaster after another while he attempts to achieve the bizarre chores at hand. Carl Greenblatt, an animator at Cartoon Network Studios and the voice of Fred Fredburger on the network’s series The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, created the series.
- The Secret Saturdays is an action-comedy about family of super-scientists who live in a hidden base and are always on call to save the world from all evils, these adventures take them around the world.
- The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack – Life is going just great for Flapjack, a boy raised by a whale, until he rescues an old pirate from a wrecked ship. The show comes from creator Thurop Van Ormon.
- Re-Animated is based on the successful Cartoon Network TV movie of the same name the bowed on December 2006. Created by Adam Pava and Tim McKeon, the Re-Animated series is scheduled to debut this summer 2007.
The network also has a series of special events and new media projects planned for the remainder of this year:
- Cartoon Network Invaded – Each Friday in May an alien will be featured in a new episode ending with a total alien invasion marathon on Memorial Day;
- Props is a multi-media project that will run this summer and feature 16 stories of real kids and showcase their specific talent, commitment and/or accomplishments. A one-hour special featuring the six finalists voted on by viewers will air September 2007;
- Ben 10 Live-Action Movie based on the animated series of the same name, this mixed live-action and CGI animation movie is directed by Alex Winter (Bill in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure) and is slated to premiere in the fall;
- Cartoon Network New Media introduced CallToons, a new mobile application that will feature Cartoon Network and Adult Swim characters and related ringtones and other content for incoming calls.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
CCI Entertainment Ltd. and Seven24 Films Inc. (f/k/a Alberta Filmworks) have entered into a co-venture to produce a number of new properties over the next three years. The first project to be developed under the pact is a tween-targeted TV series, Stuck in the Middle. Additionally, the co-development slate includes two movies, a Halloween thriller and a family Christmas comedy. Most recently CCI and Seven24 co-produced the live-action/CGI series Dinosapien (15 episodes) last year for BBC, Discovery USA and BBC Kids. CCI and Seven24 will produce an additional 13 episodes of Dinosapien this summer 2007.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nick at Nite will premiere two movies, a first for the network, beginning next week. The 1980s comedies Crocodile Dundee and Planes, Trains & Automobiles will bow on Nick at Nite on Tuesday, February 20 and 27 respectively from 9-11p.
STONE SOUP
Given all of the various modern distractions like DVDs, video games, the internet (e.g. social networking websites) and all are kids, tweens and teens really watching less TV? According to a Magna Global, which has done an analysis of the most recent Nielsen Media Research data, the answer is no. Magna reports the average 24-hour TV viewing times by Kids 2-11, Tweens 9-14 and Teens 12-17 are on par with last year, with K2-11 viewing up versus five years ago for the demo. That said, the report does indicate that while kids/teen may not be watching less TV, not all viewing habits are equal, particularly as kids/teens increase their ability to multitask. When it comes to broadcast networks versus kid centric cable networks, K2-11 and K6-11 are watching more action-adventure shows on cable, while the average amount of time spent viewing kid’s shows on the broadcast networks has decreased by 15 minutes a week.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Nancy A. McGee has been appointed SVP/Marketing, Starz Entertainment. Heading up a team comprised of marketing communications, branding, research, online/new media, and product development, McGee is charged with developing the overall Starz brand and helping to grow the company through its new initiatives in online, HD and original programming. She will report to President and COO, Bill Myers. McGee had been SVP/Marketing, Adelphia Communications until August 2006, when Adelphia was sold to Time Warner Cable and Comcast Cable. Previously she held Sr. marketing positions with cable companies AT&T Broadband and MediaOne.
As part of an initiative to increase the creation of new original properties, Lion Television USA has named Christy Spitzer as Director/Development. Spitzer will be based in NYC and will report to EVP, Tony Tackaberry. She joins the company from MTV where she served as Manager/Development. Previously Spitzer worked for Columbia Pictures on range promotional platforms.
Caryl Liebmann joins Pokemon USA, Inc. as Director/Development and Promotions. She will be responsible for developing and implementing retail promotions including feature shops, gift with purchase programs, cross promotions and private label and direct-to-retail opportunities. Liebmann previously toiled for 4Kids Entertainment, Inc., where she focused on properties including Pokemon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Yu-Gi-Oh!
