After being a fixture on FOX’s reality competition series American Idol for eight seasons judge Paula Abdul announced her departure. On Tuesday, Abdul broke the news herself via her Twitter feed saying in part, “With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to ‘Idol’ … I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from Day 1 become an international phenomenon …” Details about why Abdul made the decision to leave the show are still coming to light, though she reportedly was asking for about $20 million a year to remain on the show. Producers FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment apparently offered her a 30% raise equaling an eight-figure, multi-year deal but both sides could not agree on the salary figure. The other American Idol judges, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi as well as host Ryan Seacrest are all set to return for the show’s ninth season next January. FOX, FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment released this statement about Abdul’s exit, “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the ‘American Idol’ family over the last eight seasons, and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent, and we wish her the best.”

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

USA Network announced actor/director/writer Tim Matheson was brought on to direct the original pilot Covert Affairs, recently approved by the network. Production begins this September in Toronto and the project is from Universal Cable Productions and Dutch Oven.

Long-running movie critique series At the Movies tapped film critics A.O. (Tony) Scott of The New York Times and Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune as new permanent co-hosts when the series returns for its 24th season the weekend of September 5. The pair appeared previously on the series as guest co-hosts. The series is produced by ABC Media Productions at WLS-TV in Chicago and is distributed nationally in syndication by Disney-ABC Domestic Television. The show first debuted in 1975 at WTTW/Chicago when Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel hosted a local movie review show called Sneak Previews.

The N – rebranding soon to become TeenNick – optioned the rights to the Catwalk book series for a possible TV series from author Deborah Gregory (The Cheetah Girls), cites THR. The book series is about four best friends at Fashion International High School in Manhattan as they compete in a designer competition. Gregory will co-write the pilot along with Jacob Epstein in addition to executive producing with Norris Epstein. Norris Epstein, formerly of the Disney Channel was instrumental in developing the Cheetah Girls book series for the network.

Syfy approved a 90m action/adventure pilot called Alphas, formerly titled Section 8 from BermanBraun Television and writers Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, reports THR. The plot is about ordinary people who have hyper-developed neurological talents. Universal Cable Productions will produce; ABC Studios which produced the concept as Section 8 for ABC two years ago still holds a small ownership stake in the project.

ABC Daytime announced it will relocate the production of soap All My Children from New York to Los Angeles this December.  ABC’s other soap One Life To Live will take over AMC’s facility in New York, once AMC moves out. As a result, both soaps will have the advantage of larger productions facilities just as both gears up for hi-def production. AMC will begin taping in L.A. the week of January 4, 2010 and hi-def episodes will start airing in February. To date, AMC has been on the air for 39 years and OLTL for 41 years.

Debuting October 2, Turner Classic Movies will offer a series of 60m specials called A Night at the Movies, per Variety. Each Friday night episode, from DreamWorks Television, will explore a different cinematic genre and interview actors and talent affiliated with the specific genre. In October, the series will examine thrillers throughout the month. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Another huge entertainment news story was broken on Twitter late Tuesday as Paula Abdul announced to her followers, “with sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to #IDOL.” (The LA Times reports that Fox was willing to up her salary to as much as $5 million/year for 3 years, after re-signing host Ryan Seacrest to a 3 year, $45 million deal last month.) Then around 12:30 pm PT yesterday, former Cheers star Kirstie Alley tweeted that she would be replacing Paula on Idol. “The Network is going to kill me but THERE IT IS FOLKS!!,” she wrote. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  4Kids Entertainment has retained Montgomery & Co. to assist the Board of Directors in its evaluation of strategic alternatives, which could include asset sales, strategic partnerships, as well as a potential sale via merger of the company.  Explaining the move, 4Kids Chairman and CEO said the reason for retaining a financial advisor is a direct result of “… recent developments in our business and in the current macroeconomic environment …”  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
