Cynopsis: Kids!

8/02/07

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Penguin went a-courting, and he did go, uh huh.
He rode ’til he came to the Mouse’s den, uh huh.

Well, that is the version of the ditty based on yesterday afternoon’s news that Disney acquired Club Penguin, the K6-14 targeted virtual world, which purports to have 12+ million registered users, which includes 700,000+ current paid subscribers, mostly across the US and Canada.  Disney paid $350 million to the three Canadian Dads that founded and launched Club Penguin in 2005, and who could potentially earn as much as another $350 million pay off, if the virtual world hits projected worldwide growth markers by the end of 2009.  Earlier this year Club Penguin had drawn interest from Sony and Viacom.  Now titled Disney’s Club Penguin, the site will retain its URL ( http://www.clubpenguin.com) and will remain based in British Columbia.  The founding Dad’s, Lane Merrifield, Dave Krysko and Lance Priebe, will be join Disney and will continue to serve as the senior management team of Club Penguin.  Merrifield, Club Penguin’s CEO, will become an EVP of The Walt Disney Internet Group, reporting to WDIG President Steve Wadsworth.  WDIG’s other kid/family aimed virtual worlds include Disney’s ToontownOnline and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean Online (late 2007) and Disney Fairies (2008).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director George Miller (Happy Feet) is rumored to be at the top of Warner Bros. list to direct Justice League of America, per Latino Review and Collider.com.  According to the latter of the two sources, the superheroes that just might be included in the blockbuster are Superman, Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The good news about the end of the summer is that, as it has for past 38 years, August brings new episodes of Sesame Street.  Featuring a new literacy centric curriculum, the 38th Season of Sesame Street premieres on PBS Kids on August 13, 2007 (check local listings).  As part of the literacy initiative, each of the new episodes begins with a segment called “What’s the Word on the Street?” During this segment a word is introduced and defined and that word will be repeated later in the episode during street scenes, animated segments and live-action films.  One new character moves to Sesame Street this year, and he is Chris, the nephew of Gordon and Susan, and finds a job working at Hooper’s Store.

NBC Universal is featuring ten movie comedies on VOD this month, in an effort to beat the dog days of summer and the dreaded back-to-school season (at least for kids anyhow).  The titles include some classic teen and/or family movies (wait till you see which ones – you’ll feel old) such as, Sixteen Candles, Animal House and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.  NBCU is promoting the month-long offering with Name That Comedy, an online interactive game that will test what we all know about these movies ( www.universalvod.net/name_that_comedy).  Additionally, microsites are available for affiliates to participate in the promotion and drive awareness for the August VOD effort and the game.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Gamers who play Electronic Arts’ new game title, NCAA Football 08, can choose to play the game with a newly added dimension, weather.  EA Sports and The Weather Channel Interactive partnered to bring real-time weather conditions, which include updates via the internet and provided by The Weather Channel.  So, when a gamer, with a live internet connection, loads a new game, they can opt to play the game with real-time weather, and if they do the weather will reflect the actual weather conditions that could occur at the stadium where the game is and will how the game is played (e.g. if conditions are poor, the players may not move as quickly).

Chorion has inked a new set of apparel and lifestyle license deals for its brand, Mr. Men and Little Miss, based on the like titled books by Roger Hargreaves.  Chorion’s series The Mr. Men Show will launch on Cartoon Network in January 2008.  The new licensees will develop products for all ages:

  • Berkshire Fashion is developing headwear, raingear and cold weather accessories
  • C-Life’s No Kidding division will launch a line of boys’ sets and swimwear and girls’ dresses and sets for spring 2008
  • H.E.R. Accessories plans to release novelty junior accessories
  • You and Me Legwear’s products will include hosiery and socks
  • Vending Supply Inc. is creating stickers and temporary tattoos
  • Pamper Me Pets is developing a line of Mr. Men pet accessories
  • Franco Manufacturing is developing a line of bedding, bath and beach towels and slumber bags.

20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising has inked a range of deals based on its TV and movie properties across a various categories:

  • The Simpsons: Character UK LTD.  products include plaques, coasters, door knob hangers, paper weights, desk mats, key chains, mugs and tumblers; Funko LLC. – Bobble Head Figurines, Bobble Head air fresheners, wind up toys, 4 foot Homer Bobble Head; Hasbro Inc. – wall decorations
  • Family Guy: Funko LLC. – Bobble Heads, Bobble Head air fresheners, gift sets of Bobble Heads packed with t-shirts; Hasbro Inc. – wall decorations
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Digital Bros.- video game (Nintendo DS); Inkworks – trading cards

  • The Dark Is Rising: Simon & Schuster- book featuring key art
