Late last week, three shows received cancellation notices from their networks:
NBC’s Saturday Night Live opened its new season this past Saturday with a surprise in the form of the “F” word uttered by new cast member Jenny Slate. During a skit parodying a talk show by biker women called Biker Chick Chat, Slate let the word slip during a quick banter between her and cast member Kristen Wiig and guest host Megan Fox. East coast audiences heard the slip-up at about 1240a as it aired live; however, the less offensive “freakin'” was substituted for SNL’s replays in western time zones. TNT acquired the basic cable rights to Quentin Tarantino’s box office hit Inglourious Basterds, the World War II dramedy headlined by Brad Pitt. The film, produced by The Weinstein Company will debut on TNT in 2012. To date, the film has grossed nearly $115 million and the license fee will likely be the usual 12% of the domestic box office take. Tomorrow, MTV premieres Valemont, a new short-form scripted series centering on a supernatural mystery. The co-branded, multi-platform series begins tomorrow night and the two and a half minute episodes will air over six weeks in the commercial pods before The Hills at 10p and following The City at 1030p. Twenty-three further episodes of Valemont will be available via MTV.com and on V Cast Video from Verizon Wireless including other bonus footage. Valemont is about 18-year old Sophie, played by Kristen Hager as she infiltrates Valemont University to discover why her brother Eric disappeared. The series is co-produced with Electric Farm Entertainment. KVEA-TV, the Telemundo station in Los Angeles, debuted a new entertainment style magazine show, Acceso Total (Total Access) last week. The half-hour Spanish-language show airs Monday-Friday and is produced and broadcast in hi-def. Acceso Total will report on Latino as well as non-Latino entertainment news across all genres along with two hard news segments featuring the day’s headlines. Conservative columnist and avid wordsmith, William Safire, died yesterday at a hospice in Rockville, MD due to pancreatic cancer. He was 79. William wrote political commentary on the Op-Ed page of The New York Times for 30 years. In addition, William was well-known for his “On Language” column in The New York Times Magazine as well as a dozen plus books, investigating the origins of words and common phrases. This weekend, more than 30 years after fleeing the US and pleading guilty in 1978 for having unlawful sexual relations with a 13-year old girl, director Roman Polanski was arrested by Swiss police. The 76-year old director, known for his work on such films as Chinatown and Rosemary’s Baby among others, was apprehended by the Swiss Justice Ministry as he arrived Saturday at the Zurich Film Festival and could possibly face extradition to the US. Since 2005, US authorities have been seeking Polanski’s arrest for the 1977 sexual offense against his victim, Samantha Geimer, who went public with her identity long ago. Over the years, Polanski has petitioned to have his case dismissed and Geimer agrees, saying she wants the case to be over. She previously sued Polanski and was granted an undisclosed settlement amount. Polanski will remain in Zurich until the extradition proceedings are over and the US has 60 days to file a formal request for his transfer. Idaho-based non-profit corporation, Salt & Light Radio, Inc. is involved in a purchase deal with Journal Broadcast Corporation and Journal Broadcast Group, Inc. to buy KGEM-AM and KCID-AM in Boise for $950,000. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and normal closing conditions. Salt & Light Radio will offer Catholic Christian programming on both stations, with KGEM broadcasting full-time in English and KCID broadcasting full-time in Spanish. The CW approved a yet-to-be-titled 30m reality series featuring New York socialite Tinsley Mortimer. The network plans on scheduling this new reality show, produced by Glassman Media, with the other recently ordered half-hour reality docu-series, Fly Girls. Both series received orders for eight episodes. Andrew Glassman executive produces the untitled project. As a follow up to a story from last week, FOX gave a script commitment for a new animated project titled Sky Jockeys from RDF Media USA and UKTV. Sky Jockeys is a comedy about the job adventures of airline workers and is penned by British writers Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto. This news comes on the heels of UKTV’s announcement that its network Dave made a script development agreement with RDF Media which includes animated and live-action comedy series with Sky Jockeys as one of the projects. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is teaming again with ABC as the network gave a pilot commitment to his new drama Hopscotch. The storyline, written by Chris Levinson and produced by Warner Bros. Television is being touted as a “high-concept police procedural.” Bruckheimer executive produces with Levinson and Jonathan Littman of Bruckheimer TV; Kristie Anne Reed of Bruckheimer TV also co-executive produces. Just last Tuesday, Bruckheimer’s new series, The Forgotten premiered on ABC. Elsewhere at ABC, the network gave a nod for a script commitment with penalty to a project called Friends With Benefits from Imagine TV. The single-camera romantic comedy project is also produced by 20th Century Fox Television and is written by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (both writers on 500 Days of Summer). Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer as well as David Nevins will executive produce the project about 20-something friends who realize its time to make long-term decisions about life. David Dobkin, director of Wedding Crashers is set to direct if a pilot is approved. NBC has a new project on tap from Sony Pictures Television and comedy writer Mike Sikowitz, tentatively titled Slacker Sons, cites Variety. NBC handed a premium script order for the 30m project where the brother teams of Anthony and Joe Russo will direct and executive produce the pilot along with Bryan and Sean Furst of Furst Films. Slacker Sons is about two 20-something brothers who become wealthy after developing a popular energy drink. The brothers buy their family home and end up helping their divorced dad who is laid off from his corporate position. Chef Gordon Ramsay ventures into the world of animation as star of a new half-hour stop-motion animated comedy series called Gordon Ramsay, at Your Service from Toronto-based Cuppa Coffee Studios. The project, currently seeking a writer, will be offered to buyers at MIPCOM next month in Cannes. Cuppa Coffee Studios is the animation company behind Nick at Nite’s primetime series Glenn Martin, DDS and MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch as well as other series. USA Network said Vincent D’Onofrio the long-time star of Law & Order: Criminal Intent is departing the series at the start of the program’s ninth season. D’Onofrio has been a series regular since the show’s inception on NBC playing Detective Robert Goren. USA said the actor was leaving his role to pursue “new acting challenges in film and television.” D’Onofrio will appear in the series’ two-part ninth season opener in order to hand off the storyline to Jeff Goldblum and his character. D’Onofrio himself indicated he may return to Law & Order: CI reprising his role as Det. Goren for guest starring stints. Other Law & Order: CI regulars have also recently left the show including Kathryn Erbe, Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson. Nicholson’s character will be replaced by Saffron Burrows. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The FCC’s new neutrality rules are already causing some finger pointing. AT&T filed a letter with the FCC on Friday accusing the Google Voice web-based calling system of violating net neutrality principles. AT&T argues that Google Voice, which enables users to consolidate several voice lines and forward calls to a single number, unfairly discriminates by restricting outgoing calls to some numbers such as adult chat lines and conference-call centers. In a blog posting, Google counsel Richard Whitt notes that the FCC’s net-neutrality principles “apply only to broadband carriers – not Web-based software applications. Even though the FCC does not have jurisdiction over software applications, AT&T apparently wants to use the regulatory process to undermine web-based competition and innovation.” Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: BRB Internacional is working on a new preschool animated series Zookaboo! (104×2), it hopes will be the first 3D Stereoscopic series, which it will offer at MipJunior and Mipcom. Zookaboo is created using real images and 3D HD animation and employs 3D Stereoscopic technology to create special effects. By wearing special glasses to watch the show viewers will get the heightened 3D effects when viewing it on TV, low-demand internet video and Blu-ray. Each episode of the series features a character hiding in a box and the voices of kids guessing what is in the box (“do you have hair? Legs?”), with the animal answering along the way (visuals corresponding to the guesses/answers are featured) – until the kid(s) guess correctly and animal reveals itself. A co-production with Catalonia-based Screen 21 in cooperation with French design studio Image In, Zookaboo will be available for air at the end of 2010. BRB Internacional manages all rights for Zookaboo worldwide (except in France and the Middle East). Full edition: CYN KIDS. Actor Ken Howard was elected to the position of national President of the Screen Actors Guild for a two-year term. Howard won the election to become SAG’s 25th president with 47% of the vote after a contentious race. According to Howard, one of his first jobs will be to communicate with the presidents of DGA, WGA and AFTRA to begin bargaining strategies as the contracts for all four unions end in 2011. “Despite the sharp differences that those of us active in guild affairs sometimes have over strategy and tactics, we need to continually remind ourselves that we’re all on the same team, fighting for the same thing — and by pulling together, we’ll only grow stronger,” Howard said. Mediaedge:cia (MEC) named Ed Ling as Managing Director/Global Solutions. Most recently, Ed was with AnalogFolk, a full-service digital agency founded by Ed and five other partners in early 2008. At MEC, Ed will be based in London and will head the company’s multinational business group and spur strategic direction among its worldwide client base. He will report to Caroline Foster Kenny, Global CCO, MEC. This day in History: 1892 – The first nighttime football game in the U.S. took place under electric lights.
