Cynopsis: Kids!

11/24/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, November 24, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Summit Entertainment‘s movie Twilight opened this weekend in 3,419 theaters earning an estimated $70.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo, making it the fourth largest opening ever for November.  Of the total weekend take, the movie grossed $35.8 million on Friday alone to become the second biggest opening day for a non-summer movie, behind Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which rang in at $40.4 million on its opening Friday, November 18, 2005 in 3,858 theaters, per Variety.  The latter also notes that $7 million of Friday’s take came from the Thursday night midnight showings of the movie.  Summit had initially planned to release Twilight on December 12, 2008, but swooped in on the November 21 date when Warner Bros. announced in late summer its plans to shift its release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from this weekend until July 17, 2009.

And on that note … Summit Entertainment officially gets going on the movie adaptation of New Moon, the second title in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series.  I doubt the blood will drain from your face when I tell you that Robert Pattinson (Edward) and Kristen Stewart (Bella) will reprise their roles for the film  and please stop shrieking now.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Fox is ditching its Saturday morning kids block altogether and will replace it with infomercials come January 2009, according to a report in Variety.  This comes on the heels of news earlier this month that Fox settled its lawsuit with 4Kids Entertainment, which will effectively end the 4KidsTV four-hour Saturday morning kids programming block (8a-12p), currently airing on Fox, at the end of December 2008.  Fox’s new two-hour infomercial block, entitled Weekend Marketplace, will air 10a-12 noon and has been cleared on 95% of Fox affiliates.  The remaining two hours previously included in the 4KidsTV block are being returned to the affiliates.  The 4KidsTV block had provide affiliates with 30 minutes of the FCC mandated three hours a week of kid-targeted educational programming.

Today marks the first day of Thanks-For-Giving Week on Sprout.  The 24/7 preschool service will celebrate people to be thankful for during its daily morning show, The Sunny Side Up Show (9a), which will include visits outside the studio with a farmer, police officer, school teacher and firefighter.

The animated special My Friends Tigger & Pooh Super Sleuth Christmas Movie is set to premiere Saturday, December 6, 8:30-9:15a during Playhouse Disney, Disney Channel’s preschool programming block.

Televix Entertainment picks up the Latin American broadcast and home video distribution rights for Amberwood Entertainment‘s CGI animated series RollBots (26×30).  RollBots is slated to premiere on in the US on CW4Kids and in Canada on YTV this coming February 2009.

Beginning this month, the Lessons and Lyrics music segments and program clips of Rogar Studios‘ preschool series Sheira & Loli’s Dittydoodle Works are available on KOL Jr., AOL’s K2-5 targeted site.  KOL Jr. is also offering Dittydoodle Works coloring pages and a link to the public television series’ official website ( www.dittydoodleworks.com).  Additionally, Rogar has also launched its new Lessons in the Lyrics System (L.I.T.L.S.), a music-based learning system that includes episodes on DVD, a CD of songs, activity book etc., which is available via an infomercial (1×60 seconds) airing on kid-targeted TV nets and at www.sartmusic4kids.com.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic will publish a new 10 book series, entitled Rebel Force, and based on the first Star Wars movie star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), according to Publishers Weekly.  Set just after Episode IV, the first title in the K9-12 targeted book series, Rebel Force #1: Target, will be released in January 2009, along with Rebel Force #2: Hostage, with a new title released every four months through September 2011.  A longtime Star Wars licensee, Scholastic also publishers several other Star Wars books, including the Clone Wars books, a pop-up book and movie tie-ins.
