Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

DisneyToon Studios (DTS) is being restructured, which will result in several significant changes including moving out DisneyToon’s President, Sharon Morrill, moving the division under the Disney Animation Studios and the unit will alter its approach away from making direct-to-DVD sequels of Disney animated movies (e.g. Cinderella, Lion King, Land Before Time etc.).  DTS will now fall under the leadership of John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer/ Disney and Pixar Animation Studios and Ed Catmull, President/Disney and Pixar Animation Studios.  Meanwhile, Morrill, who has been with the company for 15-years, the last three of which as President/DTs, “will assume new duties within the Studio, which will include working on a variety of special projects.”  Though Disney has had great success with DTS produced direct-to-video sequels, under the new plan the group will produce and release original direct-to-DVD titles, which is certainly in keeping with the current leadership in the Disney and Pixar animation marriage.

Friday saw the continuing discussion of about kids, obesity and advertising at hearings on Capitol Hill.  House Telecommunications & Internet Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) reiterated his stance on food companies that market to kids should follow in the footsteps of Kellogg.  Earlier this month Kellogg agreed to either improve the nutritional contents of its products targeted to kids or cease advertising those products to kids.  Markey also encouraged the entertainment industry to continue its efforts to educate parents/adults about the v-chip and other measures to help them identify content appropriate for their families.  It should be noted that Markey is a v-chip supporter and was part of the group that helped to put the V-chip legislation together.  Continuing on the topic of marketing junk food to kids, the Representative also says that TV shows that carry junk food advertising should not be allowed to qualify as an FCC friendly program.

MORE KIDS STUFF

James Kyson Lee, who plays Hiro’s friend Ando Masahashi on NBC’s Heroes, will serve as guest host on an episode of Anime Network’s original series Anime Access that will provide viewers with a behind the scenes look at Anime Expo.  Anime Network will debut the episode on August 16, 2007. 

Astral Media’s Family Channel kicks of season three of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody Sunday, August 5 at 8:15a. The Suite Life of Zack & Cody is a Laugh production in association with Disney Channel.

Toon Boom Animation Inc. has teamed with FableVision, a developer/publisher of educational media and interactive products, to co-develop education products for grades K-12 and consumer markets.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Anime Expo (also known as AX) will be held in Long Beach, California June 29 through July 2 ( http://www.anime-expo.org/ ).  Hosted by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, a non-profit organization, some 40,000+ people attended the show last year.  Anime Expo 2007 sponsors include ADV Films, ImaginAsianTV, Bandai Entertainment, Infinity Studios, Go Media Entertainment, Digital Manga Publishing, Gaia Online, Copic Marker and the Los Angeles Times.

It seems like it was only yesterday, but Barney is turning 20-years-old, and HIT Entertainment will launch its celebration in September with a 20-city Purple Bus Tour.  Sponsored by JAKKS Pacific and in partnership with Toys ‘R’ Us and Children’s Miracle Network, the tour kicks off on the west coast and will travel the US through spring 2008.  The big purple guy’s natal celebration will also include a new line of Barney preschool toys from JAKKS Pacific, the master toy licensee, and a new DVD, Barney: Dino-Mite Birthday, from Fox Home Entertainment set for September 2007.  Additional plans include an infant/toddler apparel line from Franco Apparel, as well as a health/beauty product line from Dr. Fresh that will bow this fall.  The 11th season of Barney & Friends will debut on PBS Kids on September 3, 2007.

This week marks Electronic Arts’ release of the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix videogame from Hayden Panettiere and for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii game consoles.

Elsewhere, Sassy Tails has entered into a licensing deal with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to produce a line of Harry Potter themed hair accessories for girls.  The nine Harry Potter-themed styles include ribbons printed with Dumbledore’s Army and the Ministry of Magic silhouettes in addition to solid ribbons in red and purple.

Tomorrow Disney Records and Hollywood Records will release a double cover, two-disc Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus CD.  This, the second Hannah Montana soundtrack, features series star Miley Cyrus performing a range of songs including eight that she wrote on her own.

In support of the upcoming Hannah Montana concert and second season of the series, Radio Disney will run the Hannah Montana 2 BFF Sweepstakes launching Friday, June 29 through July 12, 2007.  Fans, who can enter by calling Radio Disney (1.888.EARS 018) or via its website ( http://radio.disney.go.com/index.html ).  Additionally, fans will be invited to take part in a Sing-A-Long with Hannah Montana Lip Synch Showcase at events hosted by participating Radio Disney local stations.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Matrix Holdings Limited, an investment company, has acquired Funrise Toy Corporation, the manufacturer/ distribution of kid’s toys.  This is the second acquisition for Matrix in the US, which also acquired Shelcore in 2005, a manufacturer of infant and preschool toys.  Shelcore and Funrise will remain two separate entities and operate independently under its current management structure.  Funrise products include gazillion Bubbles, Zoooos, Head Bangers and Play ‘n Pretty, as well as licensed brands such as Tonka, Disney and Sesame Street.

MTV Networks’ Entertainment Group has upped Erik Flannigan to EVP/Digital Media. Based out of Comedy Central and Spike TV’s NYC offices, he will report to Doug Herzog, President, Entertainment Group.  Flannigan will manage the digital media teams and all digital business for Comedy Central, Spike TV and TV Land as well as those for the web sites AtomFilms, AtomUploads, GameTrailers.com and Xfire and the future integrated IFILM and SpikeTV.com which will be merged later this year as Spike.com.  Additionally, MTV Networks’ Entertainment Group has upped Jon Slusser to SVP/Spike Digital and Video Games, where he will report to Flannigan.  Slusser, who will be based in Santa Monica, will manage the upcoming merger that will result in Spike.com.  He will also offer strategic direction for the gaming applications Xfire and GameTrailers.com.
