Cynopsis: DIGITAL

07/06/09

Good morning, it’s Monday, July 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Facebook upstaged Wimbledon over the July 4 weekend in the British press after the wife of the new head of England’s spy agency MI6 posted pictures of her husband, family and friends on the social networking site. (Mail Online has some of the since-removed images here.) Apparently Lady Shelly Sawers was unaware of the site’s privacy options, making details of the family’s private life available to any and all of Facebook’s 200 million+ users. (Perhaps it’s time for Facebook to launch an educational campaign to alert users about what their options are?)

Comcast’s E! will provide global multiplatform coverage of the Michael Jackson memorial service scheduled for Tues. July 7 at 1 pm ET/10 am PT at the Staples Center in LA. With only 11,000 tickets being distributed for the event – fans had until 6 pm Saturday to register to receive one – the service is expected to kick off a scalping frenzy.

Voting for the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star game concludes Thursday exclusively on MLB.com, with the final roster spot narrowed to five candidates in each league. MLB Advanced Media is also giving away free one-week trials to the MLB.tv Premium broadband service to Final Vote participants. The All-Star rosters were expanded to 33 players this year after last year’s 15-inning marathon. Last week, MLB.com announced record totals of 223.5 million votes and 17.8 million ballots for the 16 starting position players via the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Online Ballot, which concluded on July 2.

Despite concerted efforts on the company’s part to assuage fears regarding its digital book publishing initiative, the U.S. Justice Department confirmed it has launched a probe into Google‘s $125 million settlement with authors and publishers. Critics of the e-books deal, which would clear the way to allow Google to publish millions of public domain works, argue that it would give the search giant an unfair advantage over other online publishers. The inquiry is one of three current probes involving Google; the DOJ is also looking into tech industry hiring practices and ties among board members at Apple and Google.

An electrical fire at the Seattle facility of local media company Fisher Communications (home for KOMO-TV, KUNS-TV and Fisher’s local radio stations) late Thursday knocked off services at a number of web sites including Microsoft’s new Bing Travel portal. Power was restored to Fisher Plaza early Saturday morning with back up generators.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The locally-owned Seattle Times – the city’s only daily that still publishes a print edition – is dabbling in online video, sending out cynic-at-large Mark Rahner to explore a conflict between PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and The American Veterinary Medical Association. The Vets, in town later this week for their annual convention, will attend a fish throwing demonstration at Seattle’s Pike Place Market and PETA representatives are not amused. The segment, promoted on the front page of the paper the day it was posted, generated a lot of buzz and positive feedback, according to Rahner. Rather than pack their homepages with as much text as they can possibly fit (sorry SeattlePI.com,) local papers would do well to figure out which reporters have a talent for online video and utilize them in the field. The podcast ad market is poised to increase from $28 million this year to $43 million in 2011, according to estimates from ZenithOptimedia. More important, younger readers prefer to watch their news rather than to read it. Then again with over 100 newspaper operations shuttered this year, it’s also not a bad idea for reporters themselves to diversify. Mark and film critic Robert Horton just had their first comic book published by Moonstone, Rotten, an action packed exploration of the gory zombie genre set in the Wild West. (Deadwood on bad acid could be an apt analogy here.)
