Cynopsis: Kids!

01/05/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Bratz dolls will be able to remain on store shelves through 2009.  A US federal judge has given MGA Entertainment a stay of sorts, asking MGA and Mattel to come up with a proposal under which the dolls can continue to be manufactured and sold through the year, per the LA Times.  Under the original ruling, MGA would have had to pull the dolls from shelves as of February 11, 2009.  The judge made this new modified ruling “to address the concerns regarding the 2009 retail buying season.”   In 2008 Mattel sued and won a copyright infringement against MGA Entertainment concerning the Bratz dolls.

DreamWorks Animation will support the release of its animated movie Monsters vs. Aliens (March 29, 2009) with a three-minute 3D movie trailer during the Super Bowl broadcast on February 1, 2009 on NBC.  Per the AP about 150 million 3D glasses will be handed out for free as part of a promotional distribution deal at Pepsi/SoBe Life Water displays at various retailers nationwide.  DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says the 3D glasses are an improvement over those in the past, using Intel InTru 3D and ColorCode 3-D, according to the report.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The BBC has found a new Doctor for its series Doctor Who in Matt Smith, who at 26 is the youngest actor to take on the role.  Smith will be the 11th actor to serve as the Time Lord, taking over for David Tennant who is slated to leave the show at the end of 2009.  Smith is set to debut in the fifth series airing in 2010, which will also have a new head writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, who is taking over from Russell T Davies.  Additionally, Piers Wenger will be the new Executive Producer for BBC Wales.  The identity of the new Doctor was revealed over the weekend on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential.

Actors Hugh Jackman, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix and Lord of the Rings) and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) will lend their voices to characters in the new Warner Bros. 3D animated feature Guardians of Ga’Hoole, according to Australia’s The Daily Telegraph. Directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Sydney based production company Animal Logic (happy Feet), Guardians of Ga’Hoole is based on the kid’s books by Kathryn Lasky and slated for release July 30, 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong premieres tonight on HBO at 7:15p, followed by its release on DVD tomorrow, as well as the release of three books based on Chrissa.  The new movie is the first American Girl movie to focus on a modern girl doll, versus the previous movies that revolved around historic figures.  In the movie Chrissa, a fourth grader, and her family move mid-school-year to a new town and school where she is immediately teased and bullied by a group of girls.  Chrissa also serves as American Girl’s 2009 Girl of the Year.
American Girl is unit of Mattel.

Disney.com continues to offer the exclusive premiere of the Disney/Pixar animated short films Cars Toons including today’s debut of El Mater-Dor.

Sirius XM Radio premiered Kids Stuff, a new music and storytelling show aimed at preschoolers, over the holidays.  Kids Stuff airs Mondays-Fridays at 12p on Kids Place Live on Sirius and XM channels 116.  Kids Place Live offers daily programming for K2-10, including The Animal Farm (7a), The Absolutely Mindy Show (3p) and Robbie Schaefer’s Stuck in a Real Tall Tree (7p).
