Good morning, it’s Monday, January 19, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  Cynopsis is closed today in recognition of Martin Luther King Day, though you can probably reach any of us via email.  Here is an abbreviated edition – we’ll be back with a full edition tomorrow.

Long troubled electronics retailer Circuit City is officially throwing in the towel, announcing plans to seek Bankruptcy Court approval in order to liquidate assets. The company filed for Chapter 11 protection in November but remained open through the holidays in a last-gasp effort. More than 30,000 employees will lose their jobs. 

If you forget to set your DVR, no worries – there’s no shortage of places to catch tomorrow’s historic Inaugural Address online and via mobile devices. Many of these destinations will also feature archived material from the campaign trail, including some of the independently-produced fare that helped propel the President-elect into the spotlight:

• Hulu will pick up Fox’s live stream of the festivities beginning 12 pm ET. Hulu’s Obama page  is impressive, chock full of more than 200 clips of commentary along with all 9 of the President-elect’s Weekly Addresses. Also check out Hulu’s collection of inaugural speeches  from past presidents, dating back to William McKinley
• CBSNews.com will deliver a webcast of the Inauguration anchored by Katie Couric, commencing at 10:00 pm ET, immediately following the CBS News primetime special on Tuesday evening (9:00-10:00 pm, ET/PT). Audi has the exclusive advertising rights including pre-and post-roll video as well as companion advertising units
• CBSNews.com and CBS Mobile are also hosting a UGC contest  inviting users to submit videos about the challenges their own communities are facing. The videos will be accepted during the first 100 days of the Obama Administration. CBS News and Pure Digital Technologies will also give away 50 Flip MinoHD cameras to one essay writer from each state who can best articulate the needs of his or her community
• Joost is partnering with CBS to provide live-streaming of the network’s Inauguration Day coverage. Joost’s Everything Obama channel includes Obama’s Victory Speech s well as the interview he and Michelle gave to 60 Minutes after the election
• ABC News Digital will provide extensive coverage of the address on ABCNews.com from 11:30 am ET, presented in 16×9 widescreen format, also courtesy of Audi. Coverage, co-anchored by Sam Donaldson and Rick Klein, begins at 9 am ET and will also be streamed to select ABC News and ABC News Digital Partners
• NBC‘s education unit is adding to the network’s coverage of the event with a selection of quizzes and apps testing

 

A United States Bankruptcy Court judge for the District of Delaware approved the sale of 11 Pappas Telecasting stations in Chapter 11 to New World TV Group for a winning bid of $260 million. The stations had been under Chapter 11 reorganization since Aug. 2008.
 
Outdoor Channel has acquired firearms and shooting sports portal Down Range TV. The site combines gun industry news, forums, podcasts and video content including coverage of competitive shooting events. Financial terms were not disclosed.
 

Overall revenues for newspapers across the U.S. will continue to head south in 2009 and beyond as sites like Craigslist erode classified advertising and users increasingly go online for news that is timelier and free, according to a new eMarketer report. Even online ad revenues for paper sites, which were basically flat for 2008, are expected to decline.

Apple is celebrating another milestone: the App Store has already surpassed 500 million downloads, a little over a month after it surpassed 300 million downloads (which occurred on Dec. 5.)

Online music service Slacker launched a free radio app for the IPhone last week, and while it’s no Pandora, it does offer some nice features its competitor doesn’t. Curiously the app forgoes the artist-specific stations it offers on its website to focus only on genre-based selections. When choosing genre-based stations (Rock, Punk, Alternative, etc.,) Slacker does give you further customization features Pandora doesn’t, however – allowing you to modulate the songs by personal favorites, popular favorites or year of release. Oh, and the Slacker app is not too lazy to add radio-style audio ads (rather than visual ads) that cannot be skipped. These are a necessary evil for such services, but will no doubt draw ire from users in the short term.
