Cynopsis: Kids!

01/12/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 12, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon made several announcements at the Television Critics Association on Friday, including a host for the Kids Choice Awards, picking up additional episodes of The Penguins of Madagascar, the debut of a new TV movie and SpongeBob’s anniversary:

  • The network will premiere its original primetime TV movie, Spectacular!, on Presidents Day, February 16, 8-10p.  The movie revolves around an independent teen that joins a new band after being kicked out of his old one and dumped by his girlfriend.  Directed by James Krieg and executive produced by Lauren Levine and Lion Share Production’s Jessica Horowitz, Spectacular! features 10 new original songs by Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil.  Nickelodeon/Columbia releases the movie soundtrack on February 3.
  • Let the screaming commence … Dwayne Johnson will host the 22nd annual Kids Choice Awards, will air on Nickelodeon live Saturday, March 28, 8-9:30p, from the UCLA Pauley Pavilion.  Nickelodeon’s 2009 Kids Choice Awards will be produced by Nickelodeon Productions in association with Bob Bain Productions.
  • Nickelodeon also greenlights 26 additional episodes of the CG animated series The Penguins of Madagascar, for a total of 52 episodes.  A Nickelodeon and DreamWorks Animation co-production, The Penguins of Madagascar is set to launch on the network Saturday March 28 at 9:30p.  The series will air regularly Saturdays at 10a from April 4.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a range of activities including: a new fan website (
  • www.spongebob.com , now in beta); a live reading by the cast of an unseen episodes of the series during the Sundance film festival in Park City on January 18; a SpongeBob documentary (to air across MTVN’s TV platforms); TV events, including new episodes with special guest appearances by Dennis Quaid (March) and Johnny Depp (April), followed by an hour long SpongeBob movie (November); a water conservation-themed initiative for The Big Green Help; and new lines of apparel, jewelry, toys, games and DVDs.

The BBC’s CBeebies acquires the preschool animated series Yoko! Jakamoko! Toto! (52×5).  Produced by Collingwood O’Hare Productions, Yoko! Jakamoko! Toto! will bow later this month as part of CBeebies’s Big Fun Time programming block, with a collection of shorter-form episodes of the series (26×1) to debut on the CBeebies website.

The acceleration of mobile technologies must be harnessed for educational applications, points out educational foundation The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop. The group released a new study, which found that mobile learning technology may represent the next frontier for educators if effective educational content and support is developed for these new platforms. Findings and recommendations of Pockets of Potential: Using Mobile Technologies to Promote Children’s Learning include the call for:

  • Government investment in R&D to assess the impact mobile technologies have on children’s learning and development
  • Establishment of a Digital Teachers Corps to prepare educators how to use digital media
  • Creation of a White House Initiative on Digital Learning
  • Introduction of mobile devices in schools, beginning with an experimentation phase in which teachers are trained for integrating interactive mobile media
